Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: His Place

The car ride was silent.

Amina sat by the window, watching the rain fall on the glass. The city lights passed quickly, blurred and distant.

Her mind was full.

The accident.

The man.

The memories.

And Adam.

She looked at him for a second.

Focused on the road. Calm like always.

"How are you this calm…?" she asked quietly.

He didn't look at her.

"I'm not."

She frowned slightly.

"You look like you don't care about anything."

"That's not true."

"Then what is it?"

He paused for a moment.

Then said—

"I just don't panic."

Amina looked away.

"I wish I could do that…"

"You will."

Simple answer.

But it stayed in her mind.

After a few minutes, the car slowed down.

They stopped in front of a building.

Old. Quiet. Almost empty.

"No one lives here?" Amina asked.

"Not many."

That didn't make her feel better.

Adam got out of the car.

She hesitated… then followed.

The hallway inside was dark. Only a weak light at the end.

Their footsteps echoed softly.

Amina stayed close to him.

Not by choice…

But because she felt safer that way.

They reached a door.

Adam opened it.

"Come in."

She stepped inside slowly.

The place was simple.

A small living room. A table. A couch. Nothing special.

But everything was… organized.

Too organized.

Like someone who doesn't like surprises.

"You live here alone?" she asked.

"Yes."

She looked around again.

"This place is… quiet."

"That's the point."

He closed the door behind them.

That sound again—

Click.

Amina turned quickly.

"You lock everything…"

"I have to."

Silence.

Then—

"Sit."

She sat on the couch, still looking around.

Adam walked to a small drawer and took out a towel.

He gave it to her.

"You're still wet."

She took it.

"Thanks…"

Their fingers touched for a second.

Amina looked at him.

Something about that moment felt… different.

She quickly looked away.

"Are you hungry?" he asked.

"A little…"

"I don't have much."

"That's fine."

He went to the kitchen.

Amina watched him.

He didn't talk much.

Didn't smile much.

But…

He was there.

And for some reason—

That was enough to calm her a little.

A few minutes later, he came back with some food.

Nothing fancy.

But warm.

She smiled slightly.

"This is better than hospital food."

He almost smiled.

Almost.

They ate in silence.

But it wasn't uncomfortable.

Just… quiet.

After a moment, Amina spoke.

"Adam…"

"Yes?"

She hesitated.

Then—

"Why do I feel like I know you?"

He stopped for a second.

Just a second.

Then continued eating.

"You don't."

She frowned.

"That's not what it feels like."

"It's just your brain trying to fix the missing parts."

"Or maybe…"

She looked at him carefully.

"…you're lying."

He looked up.

Their eyes met.

Silence.

Heavy.

Then—

"If I was lying," he said slowly,

"I wouldn't bring you here."

Amina didn't answer.

But she wasn't fully convinced.

Later that night.

The rain had stopped.

The city was quiet again.

Amina stood near the window.

Thinking.

Always thinking.

"I can't remember anything…" she whispered.

Behind her—

Adam was watching.

Not in a strange way.

But like someone making sure she was okay.

"You will," he said.

She turned to him.

"And if I don't like what I remember?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Then—

"Then I'll be there."

Her heart moved a little.

"Why…?"

He walked closer.

Not too close.

Just enough.

"Because you won't go through it alone."

Amina felt something warm in her chest.

A feeling she didn't understand yet.

Suddenly—

Her eyes moved.

Toward a table.

Something was there.

A photo.

She walked slowly.

Picked it up.

And froze.

Her hands started shaking.

"Adam…"

He looked at her.

"What is it?"

She turned the photo toward him.

Her voice low.

"Why am I in this picture…?"

Silence.

Adam didn't move.

Didn't speak.

In the photo—

It was her.

Standing next to him.

Smiling.

Like they knew each other.

Like they were close.

Very close.

Amina's eyes filled with shock.

"This… this is me…"

Her voice broke.

"How is this possible…?"

She looked at Adam.

Waiting.

Needing an answer.

But his face…

was serious now.

Too serious.

"That picture…" he said slowly.

"…was taken before everything went wrong."

Amina felt her world shake again.

"Before what…?"

Adam looked at her.

And this time—

He didn't hide it.

"Before you forgot me."
