Chapter 8 - Between the Waves and the Shore

The air around the house was heavy with the quiet hum of reality settling in. Vee found herself standing by the window, looking out at the distant horizon. Her mind was a whirlwind of emotions, a storm that seemed impossible to navigate. Her time here was almost up, and every part of her ached at the thought of leaving. She had only just started to let herself open up to Rui, to what could be, and now she wasn't sure what came next.

She heard the door open behind her and turned to find Brie entering the room. Her friend's gaze softened when she saw Vee standing there, lost in thought.

"You okay?" Brie asked, her voice gentle but knowing.

Vee shrugged, trying to seem nonchalant. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... thinking."

Brie didn't buy it. She stepped closer, her eyes scanning Vee's face. "You're not fine. I know that look. What's going on?"

Vee let out a deep sigh, her shoulders slumping. "I don't know anymore, Brie. I feel like I'm caught between wanting something real with Rui and my fear of what that could mean. I don't know if I'm ready for that. Not after everything I've been through."

Brie's face softened, and she reached out to place a hand on Vee's shoulder. "You don't have to have it all figured out right now. I get it. But just... don't close yourself off completely. You deserve to have what you want, Vee. Don't let your fear decide your future."

Vee's heart clenched as she looked at her friend, feeling a wave of gratitude wash over her. Brie had always been there for her, guiding her through the roughest patches of life. And now, with everything on the line, Vee wasn't sure how to let go of her own walls. But Brie was right. Maybe it was time to take the leap.

"I just... I don't know how to let go," Vee admitted quietly.

"You don't have to let go all at once," Brie said, giving her shoulder a reassuring squeeze. "Take it one step at a time. You don't need to know the end game right now. Just see where it leads. Don't run from something that could be really good for you."

Vee nodded, her throat tight with emotion. "I don't want to run. I just... I don't know if I can take that risk again."

Brie smiled softly. "I get it. But you won't know unless you try."

Just then, the door to the room opened, and Rui walked in. His eyes immediately found Vee, his expression a mixture of concern and something else, something deeper. His gaze softened when he saw the tension in her posture.

"Everything okay?" Rui asked, his voice low, as if afraid to disturb the fragile moment.

Vee met his gaze, her heart skipping a beat. She had no answers, no clear direction. But standing here, looking at him, she realized something. Maybe I don't need all the answers. Maybe I just need to be present and see where this leads.

"I'm trying to figure it out," Vee said softly, the weight of her words hanging in the air.

Rui nodded, stepping closer, his presence filling the space between them. "I know this is all moving fast. I'm not asking you to figure everything out right now, Vee. I just... I want you to know I'm here. No matter what you decide."

Her breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, she couldn't speak. The sincerity in his voice, the way he looked at her, it was overwhelming.

"I'm scared, Rui," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Scared of being hurt again. Scared of letting someone in. I don't know if I can do this."

Rui gently reached for her hand, his thumb brushing across her knuckles in a slow, comforting motion. "You don't have to do anything you're not ready for, Vee. But I'm not going anywhere. You don't have to be scared of me."

Vee's chest tightened. She wanted to believe him. She wanted to believe that what they had was real and that it could last. But her mind kept circling back to the same fear. What if it wasn't real? What if she was just setting herself up to be hurt again?

"You're not like anyone else I've met," Vee murmured, her gaze dropping to their joined hands. "And I don't want to mess this up. I don't want to regret not trying, either."

Rui gave her hand a reassuring squeeze. "You won't mess this up, Vee. We'll figure it out together."

For the first time in a long time, Vee felt a glimmer of hope. It wasn't much, but it was enough. Enough to make her believe that maybe, just maybe,,,,,she could take that step forward with Rui.

But before she could say anything else, the sound of a phone ringing cut through the quiet room. Brie picked it up immediately, glancing at the caller ID before her face shifted into a more serious expression.

"It's your dad, Vee," she said, handing the phone to her.

Vee hesitated for a moment, then took the phone, putting it to her ear. "Dad?"

"Vee," her father's voice came through, the tone serious. "I need to talk to you. It's about your future."

Vee's stomach dropped. "What's going on?" she asked, trying to keep her voice steady.

"I think it's time you came home. Your mother and I have been discussing your future, and we think it's best if you return sooner rather than later. You've spent enough time away, and we have plans for you here."

Vee's heart sank. Her father's voice held that familiar, firm tone, the one that made her feel like there was no room for argument. The weight of his words settled over her like a heavy blanket.

She glanced at Rui, who had stepped back, giving her space, but his eyes were fixed on her, concern written all over his face.

"I'll be home soon, Dad," she said, trying to keep the edge of panic out of her voice. "But I need to think about this. Let's talk later."

She hung up the phone, her heart pounding in her chest. She had only just started to build something real with Rui, and now... now her father was pulling her back into the life she had left behind.

"Is everything okay?" Rui asked softly, his voice laced with worry.

Vee couldn't answer him. Not yet. She needed to figure this out, but she didn't know how.
