Chapter 7 - Under the Surface

The morning after their conversation on the porch, the air felt different. Charged, like a storm was rolling in. Vee could sense the shift in Rui, too. There was a new kind of quiet between them, a sense of understanding, but also a lingering tension. As much as they had decided to take things slow, reality had a way of creeping in, and the world outside their little bubble was beginning to knock on the door.

Vee sat across the kitchen table, sipping her coffee and staring out the window at the ocean. She didn't want to overthink things, but it was hard not to. After their moment on the beach, everything had felt like it was falling into place, but now, the weight of her thoughts pressed against her chest. She couldn't help but wonder what would happen when they returned to their normal lives. Would the world outside their little happy escape still feel the same?

The sound of footsteps behind her broke her thoughts, and she turned to see Rui entering the room, his expression thoughtful. He looked at her with the same intensity that had pulled her in from the very beginning.

"Good morning," he said softly, his voice a little hoarse from sleep.

Vee smiled, but the uncertainty she had been feeling earlier returned. "Morning."

They stood in silence for a moment, both unsure of what to say next. There was a familiarity between them now, a closeness that hadn't been there before, but it also felt fragile, as if the moment could break at any second.

"Are you okay?" Rui finally asked, his eyes searching hers.

Vee hesitated before nodding. "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... thinking."

"About what?" he pressed, stepping closer.

Vee looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "About us... and everything that's going on. This is all... a lot, Rui. I don't know if I'm ready for whatever this is."

Rui took a deep breath, clearly trying to understand her hesitation. "You don't have to be ready for everything all at once, Vee. I'm not asking you to make any big decisions. I just want you to know that I'm here. Whatever you need."

Vee swallowed hard, her chest tightening. "I know. But it's not just about me. There's more to consider. What about your family? Your friends? What about the life you're supposed to have?"

Rui's expression hardened slightly, but his voice remained calm. "I've thought about that, too. I've been thinking about it since we met. But the truth is, I'm tired of pretending to be someone I'm not, just to fit into other people's expectations. I want something real, Vee. Something that feels right, not something that looks good on paper."

Vee's heart clenched. She could see the sincerity in his eyes, but she wasn't sure if it was enough to push through the wall of doubt and uncertainty that had built up inside her. "But what if this is just... temporary? What if we're just a summer fling? Something that fades once we're back in our own worlds?"

Rui reached out and gently cupped her face, turning her toward him so she couldn't look away. His thumb brushed against her cheek, and she could feel the warmth of his touch spreading through her skin.

"I'm not going anywhere," he said, his voice firm but tender. "And I'm not going to let this fade. I'm not going to let you go. You don't have to have all the answers, but I need you to believe that I'm serious about this. About us. Still even if you don't believe in us am gonna show you....."

Vee stared at him, her heart racing. She wanted to believe him, more than anything. But her mind kept coming back to the same doubts. She had been hurt before. She wasn't sure if she could risk opening herself up again.

Before she could speak, the sound of a car pulling up outside caught her attention. Rui's gaze shifted, and he stepped back, letting his hand fall from her face.

"That's probably Brie and Rio," he said, his voice tinged with disappointment.

Vee nodded but felt a pang of regret. She wanted to talk to him more, to figure out what all of this meant, but it was like the world was pulling them in different directions. They had barely begun to open up to each other, and now it felt like reality was forcing its way back in.

Brie and Rio entered the house moments later, their energy filling the space. Brie greeted them with a smile, though Brie could tell there was something on her mind. She was always so perceptive, especially when it came to Vee.

"How are you two this morning?" Brie asked, her eyes flicking between Vee and Rui, sensing the tension in the air.

Vee smiled but it didn't reach her eyes. "We're fine. Just, you know... figuring things out."

Brie raised an eyebrow but didn't push further. Instead, she turned to Rui. "Rio and I were thinking of heading out to check out the market. Want to come along?"

Rui hesitated for a moment, then nodded. "Sure. I'll join you guys. Vee, you coming?"

Vee opened her mouth to say something but closed it, the words catching in her throat. She wasn't sure what to do. Part of her wanted to stay, to talk things through with Rui, but the other part of her knew that things were already getting too complicated.

"I'll catch up with you later," she said, forcing a smile. "I just need some time to think."

Rui nodded, his eyes lingering on her with an expression she couldn't quite place. He said nothing more, just turned and followed Brie and Rio out the door.

Vee sat back down across the kitchen table, her hands trembling slightly. What was she doing? She couldn't keep running from this, but she wasn't sure how to face it either.

The door closed behind them, and for the first time in a long while, Vee felt completely alone. Now it was a moment between her and her thoughts.
