Chapter 12 - Unraveling the Threads

The following day after Vee's conversation with Rui, since it was the first time they had a conversation in a long while , after that she felt something close to peace. There was still a lingering knot in her stomach, but it wasn't as tight. It wasn't just the call with Rui, it was everything. The choices she was making, the future she was beginning to carve out for herself, and the unsettling feeling of what it all meant.

She spent the morning at her small studio, drafting out new ideas for her designs. The quiet hum of her sewing machine was a welcome distraction. Every stitch she made, every cut of fabric, was her way of claiming control over her life. She was starting to realize that her career in fashion wasn't just a passion, it was a symbol of her freedom. A declaration that she could create, build, and move forward on her own terms.

But as she worked, her thoughts kept drifting back to Rui. Their conversation had been a moment of vulnerability, a crack in the walls she had built around her heart. She had never allowed herself to let anyone get close, and yet, with Rui, it felt almost natural. He understood her in ways no one else had. But that was part of the problem, wasn't it? She wasn't ready to rely on anyone, and the thought of losing herself in someone else terrified her.

Her phone buzzed on the table beside her, and she froze. Rui. She hadn't heard from him since their last conversation, and the silence had been almost suffocating, and she also didn't have the courage to call him. Tentatively, she reached for the phone, her fingers hovering over the screen before answering.

"Hey," she said, her voice betraying the nerves she was trying to hide.

"Hey," Rui replied, his voice calm but warm. "Are you busy?"

Vee smiled faintly. "No,but am just working on some designs."

There was a brief pause on the other end of the line. "I was wondering... do you want to meet up? I know things have been a bit... complicated, but I think it's time we talked more. In person."

Vee's heart skipped a beat. She had been expecting this conversation, but hearing the invitation from Rui made everything feel more real. This wasn't just a passing moment of doubt, this was a chance for her to figure out what she wanted, what she needed, and what she was willing to fight for.

"Sure," she said after a moment. "Where?"

"How about the park near your place?" Rui suggested. "I'll bring some coffee. We can just sit and talk..... maybe catch up a little, just don't feel pressured."

"Okay, I'll see you there in an hour," Vee agreed, trying to keep the tremor out of her voice.

She hung up, staring at the phone in her hand. The thought of seeing Rui again, really talking to him, sent a swirl of emotions through her. She had spent so long keeping everything inside, so afraid of feeling too much. But now, she was being forced to confront everything she had tried to avoid.

Vee grabbed her jacket and headed out of the door, her mind racing with questions. What did she really want with Rui? Did she want to be with him, to explore whatever this connection between them was? Or was she still too afraid of letting someone in? She wasn't sure, but she knew one thing: she wasn't going to figure it out by avoiding him.

The park was quiet when she arrived. The trees swayed gently in the breeze, and the distant sound of children playing filled the air. Vee spotted Rui sitting on a bench near the small pond, his legs stretched out in front of him, a cup of coffee in his hand. When he saw her, he stood up, a small smile spreading across his face.

"Hey beautiful," he greeted, his voice warm, his eyes lighting up as they locked on hers.

"Hey handsome," Vee replied, feeling a flutter in her chest. She could feel the pull between them, that unspoken connection that had been growing stronger with each passing day.

Rui handed her a cup of coffee, and they sat down on the bench together, the silence stretching between them in a way that felt almost comfortable. Vee sipped her coffee, the warm liquid was comforting, and they both stared out at the pond, the tension of the past few days hanging in the air.

"So, what's going on in that head of yours?" Rui asked, his voice soft.

Vee hesitated, setting her coffee down on the bench. "A lot," she admitted. "I've been thinking about everything, about my family, about my future in fashion, about you. And I just don't know what the hell I'm supposed to do."

Rui nodded, his gaze never leaving her face. "You don't have to have it all figured out, Vee. I keep telling you this. But I want you to know that I'm here. Whatever you decide."

Her breath caught at his words. There it was again, the safety he made her feel. The sense of being accepted, of not having to carry the weight of her decisions alone.

"I don't know if I'm ready to dive into a relationship, Rui," she said softly, her eyes avoiding his for a moment. "I don't want to drag you into something if I'm not sure about it. And I've spent so long trying to figure out who I am, what I want, without anyone's influence. Also I want to prove to my dad and mum I can make my own choices and prosper. "

Rui placed his hand on hers, and the simple gesture made Vee's heart race. "You don't have to do this alone. And I'm not asking for anything from you right now. I just want to be here for you, however you need me. I also hope I can help you prove yourself. You know I always got you no matter what. "

Vee met his gaze, her heart swelling with emotions she had tried to suppress for so long. She wanted to say more, to tell him how much that meant, but the words felt stuck in her throat. She had never allowed herself to be so vulnerable before.

For the first time in her life, she realized that maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to choose between her dreams and her heart. Maybe she could have both, if she allowed herself to take that leap of faith.

"Maybe I don't have to figure everything out right now," she said softly. "Maybe it's okay to just... take things one step at a time."

Rui smiled, squeezing her hand. "One step at a time, one day at a time ,Vee. And I'll be here, walking with you always holding your hand. No matter how much you fall I will always be here to pick you. No matter how stubborn you are I will be here to coerce you."
