Chapter 11 - The Fabric of us

Vee stood in front of her small design space, her eyes scanning the fabrics she had collected over the past few weeks. They were a mix of bold colors, elegant silks, and structured cottons, each piece representing a different part of her journey. A quiet hum of excitement buzzed in her chest. She had spent so much time debating whether she could truly follow this dream, and now, standing here, the answer felt more clear than ever.

The fabrics whispered to her, offering the freedom she had been searching for. She could feel the threads of her life beginning to come together, weaving into a vision that was entirely her own. Fashion had always been a language she understood, a way for her to communicate what words never could. And now, it was time to speak that language more loudly, more boldly.

But as she looked at the fabrics, a part of her felt conflicted. What about Rui? The connection they had shared, the chemistry that had grown between them, could she really walk away from that? The idea of leaving him behind felt like an impossible choice, yet she knew she couldn't live in the shadows of others' expectations anymore. This was her life, and she had to take charge of it.

Vee reached for a piece of royal blue velvet fabric, its rich texture sliding between her fingers. She imagined it as the base for a new design, something sophisticated, something that would make a statement. A symbol of her future, maybe. She smiled softly to herself, then glanced at the clock. It was already late afternoon, and she hadn't heard from Rui in days. She had given him space, knowing that he was probably wrestling with his own emotions after their last conversation.

It was then that she heard the faint sound of knocking at the door.

She hesitated, her heart skipping a beat. Rui?

Vee quickly wiped her hands on a nearby towel, straightening up as she made her way to the door. Her heart pounded in her chest as she opened it, only to find it was not Rui, but Brie, standing on the other side, a concerned look on her face.

"Hey," Brie said, her tone soft but knowing. "Got a minute?"

Vee stepped aside, letting her in. "Of course. What's up?"

Brie walked in, her eyes scanning the space before landing on Vee. "I think you need to talk. I know you've been avoiding him, and I get it... but you need to stop running, Vee. Rui's not just some guy you can walk away from."

Vee's heart clenched, but she didn't flinch. "I'm not running from him, Brie. I'm just... I'm figuring things out."

Brie raised an eyebrow, crossing her arms. "You've been figuring it out for a while. So, what's the real reason you've been pushing him away? Is it because you're scared of what could happen? Or is it because you don't trust him to be part of your future?"

Vee swallowed hard. The question hit her like a punch to the gut. She had been so consumed by the fear of letting herself feel anything for Rui, so afraid of the vulnerability that came with being with him. And yet, here she was, caught between wanting to follow her dream and the very real possibility of building a future with someone who made her feel... alive.

"I'm scared," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "What if it doesn't work? What if I'm not strong enough to make both of us work? I've spent so much time learning to stand on my own two feet, and now... now I'm supposed to trust someone else with my future?"

Brie softened, walking over to Vee and placing a hand on her shoulder. "I get it. I do. But you're not alone anymore. Rui cares about you, and you can't keep letting fear decide your life. You deserve a chance at happiness, Vee. And maybe that's with him."

Vee exhaled sharply, stepping away from her friend. "It's not just that. I don't know what to do with everything. My family, my future in fashion... I've been running from their expectations for so long. But I can't just ignore them. They've shaped my entire life."

"I know," Brie said softly, "but you don't have to let them control you. You're allowed to make your own choices, Vee. You deserve to make your own path."

Vee closed her eyes, her mind spinning. Everything was so much clearer when she was designing, when she was lost in the act of creating something new. But here, in the world of relationships and expectations, she felt like she was walking a tightrope, afraid to fall.

Just then, her phone buzzed on the table nearby. She glanced at the screen and saw that it was Rui's name flashing. Her heart skipped a beat.

"You should answer that," Brie said, giving her a gentle nudge. "Don't let fear hold you back, Vee. Life's too short for that."

Vee hesitated for a moment before picking up the phone, her fingers trembling slightly. "Hello?"

"Vee," Rui's voice came through, low and steady, "we need to talk."

Her breath caught in her throat. This was it. The conversation she had been avoiding.

"I know," she said softly, her voice steady despite the whirlwind in her chest. "I've been avoiding you. I'm sorry."

Rui's voice softened. "I've been waiting for you to make a decision. I can't keep waiting forever, Vee. I'm not asking for all the answers right now, but I need to know if there's a future for us."

Vee closed her eyes, her mind racing. It was time. Time to decide if she was ready to let someone in, ready to let herself feel what she had been so afraid to feel.

"I don't know what the future holds, Rui," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "But I want to find out. I want to see where this goes. With you."
