The days after the art gallery seemed to blur together, and Vee found herself thinking about Rui more often than she cared to admit. She was still trying to keep her distance, trying to focus on her future and her career, but every time she saw him or heard his voice, it was as though all of her carefully constructed walls were crumbling down. And while part of her wanted to fight it, there was another part that welcomed it, the part of her that hadn't felt so seen and understood in years.
Her design work was progressing, but Vee knew that there was more to her than just her craft. There were questions about herself, about love, about what she wanted for her future, that she had been avoiding for a long time. Rui was slowly making her question everything. He was different from anyone she had met before. His patience, his kindness, and the way he cared about her, it was all so overwhelming. And that terrified her.
That morning, as Vee sat at her work table, sketching out new ideas, her phone buzzed. It was a message from Rui.
"Hey, do you have time to meet up today? I know you're busy, but I thought we could grab lunch."
Vee stared at the message for a moment, her thumb hovering over the keyboard. Her first instinct was to decline, to hide away in her work, but then she paused. It had been a while since she had spent time with him outside of their usual hangouts. A part of her wanted to see him, to see where this thing between them could go. She quickly typed out a reply.
"Sure. I could use a break. Meet you in an hour?"
She didn't wait for his reply before getting up to change. Her heart was pounding in her chest. It wasn't just lunch, it was another chance for her to be vulnerable with him. But what if she wasn't ready for that? What if seeing him just made everything more complicated?
As she walked to the café where they had agreed to meet, Vee's mind was a whirlwind of questions. But she was also strangely excited. There was something magnetic about Rui that she couldn't quite explain. He didn't pressure her, didn't try to force anything. But every time they were together, the connection between them deepened, and Vee couldn't ignore it anymore.
When she arrived, Rui was already there, sitting at a small table near the window. He looked up as she approached, his face lighting up when he saw her. As usual, he was dressed casually, but there was an ease to him that made him impossible to ignore.
"Hey," Vee said softly, settling into the chair across from him.
"Hey, beautiful," Rui replied, his voice warm and sincere. "I'm glad you could make it."
Vee couldn't help but blush at his words. It was still so strange, being called beautiful by someone who didn't want anything from her except her company. She smiled, trying to keep it cool. "You know, you don't have to keep calling me that."
Rui chuckled, his eyes twinkling with amusement. "I'll call you whatever I want. You're beautiful, Vee. Get used to it."
Vee laughed, feeling the tension in her chest slowly begin to ease. She was more comfortable around Rui than anyone else, and yet, she was still so guarded. Why was it so hard for her to fully open up? She had a feeling it was because every time she let someone in, they left without giving answers that could convince her.
The waitress brought their food, and the conversation shifted to lighter topics. They talked about their favorite foods, their childhood memories, and Vee even shared some of her latest fashion designs. Actually here is where Vee gets to remember Rui. For a moment, everything felt normal, like it had before their relationship became complicated by feelings they hadn't yet figured out.
But as they finished eating, the conversation turned more serious.
"So, Vee," Rui began, his tone softer now, "I've been thinking a lot about us."
Vee froze, her fork halfway to her mouth. She hadn't expected this. She hadn't expected him to bring it up so soon.
"I know you've been hesitant, and I get it," Rui continued. "I'm not trying to rush you into anything. But I care about you, Vee. A lot. And I don't want to hide that anymore."
Vee's heart began to race, and she set her fork down. This was it. The moment she had been dreading. The moment she would have to decide whether to pull away or let herself fall.
"I care about you too, Rui," she said, her voice quieter now. "But I've spent so long building this life for myself, focusing on my career. I'm not sure I'm ready to let someone else in right now."
Rui's expression softened, and he reached across the table, placing his hand over hers. "You don't have to be ready right now. I'm not asking you to change everything. I'm just asking you to let me be a part of your life."
Vee pulled her hand back slightly, unsure of how to process his words. It wasn't that she didn't want him in her life, it was that she didn't know how to let him in without losing herself.
"I don't know if I can do that," she said, her voice trembling. "I'm scared. I'm scared of what could happen if I let myself get too close. And I'm scared of what it means for my future. My career. Everything I've worked for."
Rui leaned back in his chair, giving her space to breathe. "I don't want to take anything away from you, Vee. I just want to add to your life. If you ever feel like I'm standing in the way of your dreams, just tell me. I'll back off."
The sincerity in his words was overwhelming, and for the first time in a long while, Vee felt like someone truly understood her. Maybe she didn't have all the answers, and maybe she wasn't ready to make any grand decisions, but for the first time, she wasn't alone in her fears.
"Thank you, Rui," she said softly. "You make it sound so simple. Maybe one day I'll figure it out."
Rui smiled, his eyes filled with understanding. "Take your time, Vee. I'm not going anywhere."
As they sat in silence, Vee felt a sense of calm settle over her. She didn't have to have it all figured out. She didn't have to make a decision today or tomorrow. She could take it one step at a time, and in that moment, she realized that maybe, just maybe, she was ready to let herself be loved.
