Vee sat on the balcony of Brie's apartment, her sketchbook open in front of her but her mind elsewhere. She had been lost in thought for most of the day, trying to weigh the pros and cons of Rui's weekend getaway offer. It was tempting, yes, but also terrifying. Could she really afford to take a break? Could she let herself be swept away by someone else's plans?
Brie walked in from the kitchen, holding two steaming cups of tea. She set one down in front of Vee before sitting down next to her, looking at her with a raised eyebrow.
"You've been staring at that sketchbook for over an hour now. What's going on in that head of yours?" Brie asked, taking a sip of her tea.
Vee sighed, glancing down at the open pages. "Just… thinking. About everything, really. I'm still not sure what to do about the weekend thing with Rui. It just feels like too much, too soon."
Brie placed her cup down and turned to face her friend, her expression serious but full of warmth. "Vee, I get it. I do. But look, dometimes you need to let go. You also worry a lot. You don't always have to have everything figured out. Trust me, I know how much pressure you put on yourself. But you deserve to relax too. After all Rui isn't those guys that hurt you in the past, he is just him, just give him a chance."
Vee smiled weakly. "I know, but what if I let my guard down and things go wrong?"
Brie shook her head. "You can't live your life always worried about what might go wrong. You've got to take chances. And hey, it's not like you're going to be alone in this. You'll have Rui there with you. Besides, I've seen how you two look at each other. There's something real between you. And if it feels right, then you should go for it."
Vee bit her lip, torn. "I don't know… I just feel like I'm not ready to be that open with him. It feels like… like I'd be losing control."
Brie leaned forward, her eyes soft. "You don't have to lose control, Vee. You just have to trust that he's not going to make you lose yourself. You're still you. And if you need someone to take the first step with you, I can always help. What do you think about a double date? Just something low-key to ease you into the whole 'spending time together' thing."
Vee blinked, surprised by the suggestion. "A double date?"
Brie nodded enthusiastically. "Yeah, why not? We can make it casual, fun. I'll ask Rio, and we can all go out somewhere, dinner, maybe a movie. Just… take the pressure off. You know, just to see how you feel when you're out in public, together, without all the weight of what 'dating' means hanging over you."
Vee's mind raced as she considered the idea. A double date. It sounded like the perfect way to dip her toes in without fully jumping into the deep end. But would Rui be on board with it?
"I don't know if he'd go for it," she said, her voice uncertain.
"Trust me, Rui is going to love the idea. He's already crazy about you. This will just give you both a chance to have fun without any heavy expectations," Brie reassured her, tapping her on the arm. "You deserve to enjoy yourself. And maybe if it goes well, it'll make it easier to say yes to the weekend getaway. What do you think?"
Vee stared out at the cityscape, her mind running through possibilities. She knew Brie was right, she had to let go of her fear. The weekend with Rui could wait. But for now, maybe a double date could be the break she needed. Just a simple, carefree night to test the waters.
"Okay," she said, finally looking back at Brie with a determined smile. "Let's do it. I'll talk to Rui and see what he says."
Brie's face lit up. "Yes! This is going to be fun. I'm so glad you're letting me help. I think it'll be the perfect way for you two to get to know each other even better."
Vee laughed, feeling a bit lighter. "Alright, but you're on your own for the awkward moments. I can't promise I won't be a total mess."
Brie grinned. "I've got your back. And you're going to be fine. Just remember to breathe."
Vee took a deep breath as she sent the text to Rui, asking if he would be up for a double date with her and Brie and Rio. She hit 'send' before she could second-guess herself. This was it. She was stepping out of her comfort zone.
A few minutes later, Rui replied: "I'm up for it. As long as you're ready for a little fun. Can't wait to spend time with you, Vee."
