Chapter 18 - The slipping back moment

Vee had always thrived on routine, on the steady rhythm of her life. She woke up early, worked hard during the day, and went to bed knowing she had done something to push herself closer to her goals. But lately, there had been a shift in that rhythm, an uncertainty that she couldn't quite shake.

Her relationship with Rui, while undeniably comforting, had introduced a new kind of chaos into her life. A chaos that she didn't know how to manage yet. She was used to being in control, but with him, things felt a little different. She found herself thinking about him constantly, replaying their conversations, analyzing his words. Was this real? Was it possible to balance a career she had worked so hard for and a relationship with someone who was, in many ways, her complete opposite?

It was a typical morning when Vee found herself sitting in her favorite coffee shop, her laptop open in front of her as she worked on her latest design sketches. She was grateful for the distraction, but her mind kept drifting. A part of her wanted to focus on her career, wanted to bury herself in her designs and forget about the rest of the world. But there was another part of her that wanted to reach out to Rui, wanted to know where this was all going.

Her phone buzzed on the table, pulling her from her thoughts. She glanced at the screen, seeing Rui's name. A smile tugged at her lips as she picked up the call.

"Hey," she answered, her voice light.

"Hey, beautiful," Rui's voice came through, warm and reassuring. "I was thinking about you. How's everything going with the internship? You seem a little distracted lately."

Vee chuckled softly, running a hand through her hair. "It's going well. Busy, as always. But I'm getting there."

There was a pause on the other end of the line, as if Rui was weighing his next words carefully.

"Listen," he said, his tone suddenly serious. "I've been thinking about something. I want to do something for you. Something special. But I don't want you to feel pressured. It's just... I want to see you happy."

Vee's heart skipped a beat at his words. She had always admired Rui's thoughtful nature, how he seemed to know when to push and when to pull back. But now, with his words hanging in the air, she couldn't help but wonder what he was planning.

"What do you mean?" she asked, curious but cautious.

"I want to take you away for the weekend," he said, his voice softer now, almost shy. "Somewhere quiet, somewhere you can relax and just be. I've been thinking you could use a break from everything, the internship, the pressure. Just... a little time to yourself, and for us. What do you think?"

Vee felt a flutter in her chest. A weekend getaway. It sounded perfect, but the timing felt off. She had so much to do, so many projects to finish. Could she really afford to take time away?

"I don't know," she said slowly, unsure of herself. "I've got so much going on, Rui. You know how important this internship is to me. I don't want to let anything slip because of a weekend away."

Rui's voice softened, a gentle understanding in his words. "I get it. I do. But sometimes, Vee, you need to take a step back to see the bigger picture. You're not going to lose everything just because you take a break. You deserve to relax. And I promise, it won't interfere with your work. It'll just be a chance for us to spend some real time together, away from all the distractions."

Vee sat back in her chair, thinking. She had to admit, the idea of escaping the grind, even for just a weekend, was tempting. But was she ready to let go of control like that? Could she really trust herself to take a break and still maintain her focus?

"I'll think about it," she said finally, her voice a little hesitant. "But I'm not promising anything."

"I'm not asking you to promise," Rui said with a chuckle. "I just want you to know that the offer is there. And whenever you're ready, I'll be waiting."

Vee smiled, grateful for his patience. "Thanks, Rui. I'll let you know."

They said their goodbyes, and as Vee hung up, she couldn't shake the feeling that Rui's offer was more than just a simple gesture. There was something deeper to it, something he wasn't telling her. But she didn't press him on it, part of her was afraid to know the truth, afraid that the more she asked, the more she would uncover about their relationship that she wasn't ready to face.

The rest of the day passed in a blur of sketches and emails, with Vee barely pausing to take a breath. She found herself distracted, her thoughts constantly wandering back to Rui and his proposal. A weekend getaway. It was exactly what she needed, but at the same time, she feared it would be too much too soon.

That night, as she sat on her couch with a glass of wine in hand, Vee's phone buzzed again. It was another message from Rui.

"Just so you know, I'm thinking of booking the place this weekend. I want this to be a surprise for you, so I won't tell you exactly where we're going until we get there. But trust me, it'll be exactly what you need."

Her fingers hovered over the screen for a moment. The idea of letting go, of taking a weekend to just be with Rui, was tempting. But the practical side of her mind kept urging her to stay focused, to keep working and pushing forward. She couldn't afford to be distracted. Not now.

But then, in the quiet of the evening, she allowed herself to imagine what it would be like to step away from it all. To let someone else take the reins, to trust them enough to show her something new. Could she do that? Could she take that leap?

Vee set her phone down with a deep sigh. The decision wasn't clear yet, but one thing was certain, things were changing, and she was standing at the edge of something she wasn't sure she was ready for.
