Chapter 9 - Tides of Change

Vee sat on the edge of the bed, the phone still gripped tightly in her hand. Her father's words echoed in her mind like a drumbeat. It's time you came home. Your future is waiting for you here. The heaviness of the conversation settled in her chest, a weight she couldn't escape.

She glanced over at Rui, who had been standing by the window, lost in thought. His expression had darkened after her call, and she knew the question that hung in the air between them. What now?

The room seemed smaller, the air more suffocating. She wanted to explain, to tell him everything her father had said, but the words felt stuck. How could she explain the expectations, the life she had been running from? The life that now seemed to be pulling her back in?

Rui turned, his eyes catching hers. His usual confidence was replaced with a quiet concern. "Vee, what did your dad say because it seemed like your pretty face just turned pale all of a sudden?"

Vee exhaled slowly, dropping her gaze to the floor. "He wants me to come home. They've been talking about my future, and... they want me to come back. They think it's time for me to embrace the life they choose for me."

The room felt colder, and she could feel Rui's presence beside her, the weight of his silence pressing in. She didn't know what he was thinking, but the disappointment in his eyes was clear.

"Now You're going back?" he asked softly, his voice barely above a whisper.

Vee nodded, her chest tightening. "I don't know what else to do. My family... they have their plans for me. I'm not sure if I can just walk away from that, Rui. It's not like I have much of a choice though. They've always expected me to follow a certain path."

Rui crossed the room slowly, his footsteps quiet. He stopped in front of her, crouching down to meet her gaze. "And what about your path, Vee? What about what you want? What about us? What about everything you feel? "

Vee blinked, fighting the lump in her throat. "I don't know what I want. I've spent so long running from their expectations, from everything they've planned for me. And now... now they want me to come back and fit into their mold. But if I stay here, if I stay with you... what happens then? What if my dad decides to come and drag me back?"

Rui's eyes softened, and he reached out, his hand gently cupping her face. "What happens then is up to you. I'm not going to pressure you into making a decision, but you need to think about what makes you happy. What makes you feel like you're not just living for someone else's dreams."

Her heart thudded in her chest. She could feel the warmth of his touch, the sincerity in his eyes. But the pull of her family, the weight of their expectations, how could she just ignore that? It was all she had ever known.

"I'm scared, Rui," Vee whispered, the tears she had been holding back threatening to spill. "What if I make the wrong choice? What if... I lose everything? What if some day you get tired and leave? What everything crumbles...then what?"

Rui took a deep breath, his thumb brushing away the tear that had escaped her eye. "You won't lose everything. You have to make the choice that's right for you, even if it's hard. I can't make it for you, and neither can your family. Also I don't think I will ever get tired of you. Do you know how much I want to wake up everyday and see this pretty face? Do you know how much I want to be the person you spend the rest of your life with?"

Vee closed her eyes, the fear gripping her chest like a vice. She had always been the one to make the safest choices, to follow the rules. Her family's approval had always been the one thing she could count on. But now... now she had to decide if she could let go of that, let go of the life she had been expected to live, and take a leap of faith.

The silence between them stretched, heavy and suffocating, until Vee finally spoke, her voice barely above a whisper.

"I don't know if I can let go of everything they've built for me," she admitted. "But I don't know if I can stay here either. Not when I feel like I'm just following someone else's dream again."

Rui nodded slowly, understanding the struggle in her words. "Then you need to figure out what your dream is, Vee. You don't have to have it all figured out right now, but you have to be true to yourself. Don't let anyone dictate your life, not even me."

Vee's breath caught in her throat. She had always prided herself on being independent, on forging her own path. But now, with Rui's words echoing in her mind, she realized how much of her life she had lived for others. How much of her identity had been shaped by people's expectations.

"Maybe I just need some time," she said softly. "To think. To figure out what I really want."

Rui nodded, stepping back and giving her space. "Take all the time you need. I'm not going anywhere. I am always here when you need anytime, anyday."

For the first time in a long time, Vee felt the weight of her choices settle on her shoulders. The path ahead was unclear, but one thing was certain, she couldn't continue living in the shadow of someone else's plan. She had to decide who she was, who she wanted to be. And maybe, just maybe, she could make that decision with Rui by her side.

As the day wore on, the pressure of the outside world continued to linger. Vee couldn't escape the pull of her family, but she also couldn't ignore the connection she shared with Rui. The choice before her was not an easy one. But for the first time, she was willing to confront it head-on.

She was no longer going to let fear control her.
