Chapter 6 - Ripples in the tide

Vee sat on the edge of the beach house porch, her eyes scanning the waves as they crashed rhythmically against the shore. The sky was painted in hues of pink and orange, a perfect reflection of the calm that seemed to have settled in her heart. After her conversation with Rui, everything felt different. Lighter, yet heavier. She hadn't realized how much she'd been holding back until she finally let herself speak the truth.

She was no longer just standing on the edge she was in the water, waist-deep, uncertain but committed.

Behind her, the sound of footsteps crunching on the gravel broke the silence. Vee turned her head slightly, her heart fluttering when she saw Rui approaching. His figure was outlined by the fading sunlight, casting a long shadow on the ground as he neared her.

"Hey beautiful," he said, his voice low, almost like he was testing the air between them.

Vee looked back at the ocean, pretending to focus on the waves. "Hey handsome."

He sat down beside her, close but not too close. For a moment, neither of them spoke. There was something peaceful about the silence, but it was also thick with unspoken words, each of them holding onto their thoughts, unsure whether to share them.

Rui finally broke the stillness, his voice soft. "I know things are moving fast. But I'm not going to pressure you. I just want you to know that I'm here. Whenever you're ready."

Vee turned to look at him, feeling a strange pull in her chest. "I don't know what I'm ready for," she confessed. "But I know I'm not running anymore."

Rui's expression softened, and he gave her a small smile, as though relieved that she wasn't pulling away. "That's all I need to hear."

They sat in comfortable silence again, watching the sky turn darker as night began to settle. The air had a cool edge to it now, but neither of them seemed to care. In the quiet, the only sounds were the soft crash of waves and the distant call of a seabird.

"I don't want to mess this up," Vee finally said, her voice barely above a whisper. She was still unsure of herself, of them, but there was something about the way Rui made her feel that was hard to ignore.

"You won't mess it up," Rui replied, his tone gentle. "I'm not going anywhere, Vee. I promise."

Vee wanted to believe him. She wanted to trust him more than she had trusted anyone in a long time. But there was that lingering fear. Fear of opening up, of letting herself fall. She had spent so long building walls around her heart. Could she really let him in?

As if sensing her hesitation, Rui reached out, gently placing his hand on hers. Vee tensed for a moment but then relaxed, letting the warmth of his touch ground her.

"I know you're scared," Rui said, his thumb brushing over her knuckles. "But you don't have to do this alone. I'm here. We can take this one step at a time."

Vee's breath hitched slightly at the sincerity in his voice. She looked at their intertwined hands, the simple connection sending a surge of warmth through her. Could she really do this? Could she really take that leap of faith?

She glanced up at him, her heart racing in her chest. "I don't know what this means, Rui. I don't know what I'm doing."

"Neither do I," he admitted with a soft chuckle, his eyes sparkling in the dim light. "But I think that's okay. We don't have to have it all figured out. Not yet."

Vee let out a soft breath, feeling a weight lift from her shoulders. For the first time in a long time, she didn't feel like she had to control everything. She didn't have to have all the answers. Maybe, just maybe, it was okay to let herself be a little lost.

"Alright," she said quietly, her voice steady. "We'll take it one step at a time."

Rui's smile deepened, and he squeezed her hand gently. "That's all I'm asking for."

They sat together in silence again, but this time, the quiet felt different. It felt comfortable, like a promise that they were both willing to keep.

As the night settled in, Vee couldn't help but wonder what the future held for them. She had no answers, no guarantees. But for the first time, she wasn't afraid to find out.
