Progress felt real. Not perfect. Not secure. But real enough to believe in.
Sofia and Kenzo had found a rhythm. Slow conversations. Honest pauses. Moments where neither of them tried to run. It wasn't the kind of love that rushed. It was the kind that stayed still— and learned how to breathe again.
But just when things began to feel steady— the past found its way back.
It happened on an ordinary afternoon. Sofia had just finished class. She stepped out into the hallway—books held close to her chest.
And then— she froze. Because standing a few steps away— was someone she didn't expect to see again.
"Hi, Sofia." Her heart skipped. Not in the way it used to with Kenzo. But in a way that felt… unsettling.
"Lucas," she said slowly. His name felt unfamiliar now. Distant. And yet— not completely gone.
Lucas gave a small smile. "It's been a while."
Sofia nodded. "Yeah… it has."
Lucas. Someone from her past. Not as deep as Kenzo. Not as complicated. But still— someone who once meant something. Someone who had almost been something more— before Kenzo came into her life.
"What are you doing here?" she asked.
Lucas shrugged lightly. "Transferred." A pause. "Didn't expect to see you this soon, though."
Sofia forced a small smile. "Same." The conversation felt… awkward. Not painful. Not emotional. Just unexpected.
But what Sofia didn't notice— was Kenzo. Standing at the end of the hallway. Watching. He had just walked out of class. And the first thing he saw— was Sofia. Talking to someone else. He didn't know who Lucas was. But he saw the way they stood. Close enough. Familiar enough. And something in his chest tightened.
Kenzo didn't approach. Didn't interrupt. He just… watched. Not out of anger. But uncertainty.
Back with Sofia—
Lucas leaned slightly against the wall. "So… are you seeing someone?" he asked casually.
Sofia blinked. The question caught her off guard. "…It's complicated," she answered honestly.
Lucas raised an eyebrow slightly. "Complicated usually means yes."
Sofia let out a small breath. "It means I'm figuring things out."
Lucas nodded slowly. "Still sounds like someone's involved."
Sofia didn't answer that. Because she didn't know how to explain Kenzo. Not in one sentence. Not simply.
"Well," Lucas said after a moment, "if you're ever not figuring things out…" He smiled slightly. "…I'd like to take you out."
That— shifted the air. Sofia went still. Because that wasn't just casual anymore. That was intention.
"I—" She didn't finish. Because she didn't know what to say.
And before she could— Lucas stepped back slightly. "No pressure," he added. "Just… letting you know."
Sofia nodded slowly. "Okay." And then— he left.
She stood there for a moment. Processing. Confused. Uncertain.
And then— she turned. And saw Kenzo. Standing there. Watching her. Her breath caught. Because she didn't know how long he had been there. Or what he had heard.
Kenzo didn't move right away. Didn't speak. But something in his expression— was different. Not anger. Not hurt. But something quieter. Something heavier. Uncertainty.
Sofia took a small step toward him. "Kenzo—"
"I didn't know you were talking to someone," he said. His voice calm. Too calm.
Sofia shook her head quickly. "I wasn't— I mean, I am, but not like that—" She stopped. Because now— even her own words sounded confusing.
Kenzo nodded once. "Okay." But that "okay"— didn't feel okay.
"It's not what you think," Sofia said softly.
Kenzo looked at her. "I don't know what to think."
And that— was the truth. Because just when things started to feel clear— something new had entered the picture. And suddenly— everything felt uncertain again.
