Chapter 22 - CHAPTER 21: WHEN TRUTH GETS TOO CLOSE

After that night— things didn't fall apart. But they didn't feel entirely steady either. It was like walking on ground that held— but reminded you it could shift.

Sofia felt it in the way she checked her phone more carefully again. Not obsessively. Just… aware.

Kenzo felt it in the way he double-checked everything. Messages. Time. His own words. They were trying. Still. But trying meant facing things they had avoided before. And eventually— those things demanded to be said.

It happened on a quiet afternoon. They were sitting in a small café just outside campus. Not crowded. Not noisy. Safe.

Sofia stirred her drink absentmindedly. Kenzo watched her. Not staring this time. Just… present. "You're thinking again," he said softly.

Sofia glanced up. "I always think."

Kenzo gave a faint smile. "More than usual."

She didn't deny it. Because he was right. "There's something I haven't said," she admitted.

Kenzo's expression shifted slightly. "Then say it."

Simple. But not easy. Sofia hesitated. Her fingers tightening slightly around her cup. "Back then…" she started. Then stopped. Kenzo didn't interrupt. He waited. "When things fell apart," she continued slowly, "I kept blaming myself."

That made him go still. "I thought maybe I was asking for too much," she said. "Too much attention. Too much reassurance. Too much… everything."

Kenzo's jaw tightened slightly. Because he remembered. He remembered how quiet he became. How distant. How unavailable.

"But now," Sofia added, "I don't think I was asking for too much." A pause. "I think I was asking the wrong person at the time."

That— hit harder than anything else. Not loud. Not angry. But honest.

Kenzo looked down. He didn't defend himself. Didn't argue. Because deep down— he knew. She wasn't wrong. "I wasn't ready," he admitted quietly.

Sofia looked at him. "And now?" she asked.

Kenzo hesitated. Because this— this was the question. Not about the past. But about now. "I don't know if I'm fully ready," he said honestly.

Sofia's expression didn't change. But she listened. "But I know I don't want to lose you because of that again," he continued. A pause. "And I know I'm trying to be better than I was."

Sofia held his gaze. "That's not the same as being ready," she said softly.

Kenzo nodded. "I know."

Silence settled between them. Not uncomfortable. But heavy. Because truth— always carries weight.

Sofia leaned back slightly. "I don't want to go back to loving someone who isn't sure about me," she said. Her voice wasn't sharp. Just clear.

Kenzo's chest tightened. "It's not that I'm unsure about you," he said.

Sofia tilted her head slightly. "Then what is it?"

Kenzo took a breath. "I'm unsure about myself."

That— shifted everything. Sofia's expression softened slightly. Because that fear— she understood.

"I don't want to promise you something I might fail at again," he added. A pause. "And hurt you even more."

Sofia looked down for a moment. Processing. Feeling. "Then don't promise," she said quietly.

Kenzo frowned slightly. "…What?"

"Don't promise me forever," she clarified. "Don't promise me you'll never mess up." A pause. "Just… show up."

Kenzo blinked slightly. Because that— felt simpler. But also harder.

"Every day," she continued. "Not perfectly. Not magically. Just consistently."

Kenzo nodded slowly. "That… I can try to do."

Sofia looked at him again. "And if you can't?"

The question lingered. Heavy. Real.

Kenzo didn't look away this time. "Then I tell you," he said. No hesitation. "No disappearing. No silence."

Sofia studied him. Carefully. Because that— that was new.

After a moment— she nodded. "Okay."

And somehow— that single word carried more trust than anything else she had said so far. They didn't rush to fill the silence after that. They just sat there. Drinks untouched. Words still hanging in the air.

But this time— the silence didn't feel like something breaking. It felt like something being built. Slowly. Carefully. Honestly.

Because sometimes— love doesn't come back with certainty.

Sometimes— it comes back with truth. And asks if you're brave enough to stay anyway.
