Chapter 27 - CHAPTER 26: CHOOSING YOU

The silence stretched. Not long. But long enough to feel like everything depended on it.

Kenzo stood there— heart racing, thoughts colliding, fear louder than ever. And yet— for the first time— he didn't run from it.

Sofia didn't speak again. She had said everything she needed to say.

Now— it was his turn. Kenzo exhaled slowly. "I've been afraid this whole time," he admitted. His voice steady— but not easy. "I kept thinking if I waited… if I figured myself out first… then I could come back to you the right way."

Sofia listened. Her expression calm. But her heart— waiting.

"But I see it now," he continued. "I don't get to figure everything out without you… and then expect you to still be here." That truth— landed heavily. Because it was real. Because it was late.

Kenzo stepped closer. Not too close. Just enough. "I don't have everything figured out," he said. Sofia's eyes didn't leave his. "I still have things I need to work on. I still get scared. I still don't always know how to do this right." A pause. "But I know one thing."

Sofia's breath caught slightly. Because something in his voice changed. "I know I want to choose you," he said.

Silence. Not empty. Full.

Kenzo held her gaze. "Not halfway. Not 'trying' without direction." A step closer. "Fully."

Sofia didn't move. Didn't interrupt. But something inside her shifted.

"I want to build this with you," he continued. "Even if it's messy. Even if I mess up sometimes." His voice softened. "But I won't disappear again."

That— was the promise she needed. Not perfection. Not guarantees. But presence.

Sofia's chest rose slowly. Because this— this was what she had been waiting for. But she didn't answer immediately. Because choosing him— meant something too.

"You're sure?" she asked quietly.

Kenzo didn't hesitate this time. "Yes." No pause. No doubt. Just certainty.

Sofia searched his eyes. For hesitation. For fear. It was still there. But this time— it wasn't controlling him. And that made all the difference.

Sofia took a small step forward. Closing the distance between them. Not completely. But enough. "Then we do this right," she said softly.

Kenzo nodded. "We will."

A pause. Then Sofia added— "No more guessing."

Kenzo's voice was steady. "No more disappearing."

Sofia's lips curved into the smallest smile. "Good."

And for the first time in a long time— the space between them didn't feel fragile. It felt… real. Kenzo hesitated for a brief second. Then— slowly— he reached out. Not rushed. Not assumed. Careful.

Sofia noticed. Her heart reacting instantly. But this time— she didn't stay still. She let him. Their hands met. Softly. Not tight. Not desperate. Just… there.

And somehow— that simple touch— meant more than anything they had said.

Because this time— they weren't holding on out of fear.

They were holding on— because they chose to.
