Chapter 33 - CHAPTER 32: SOFT DAYS, SHARP MEMORIES

Things got softer. Not perfect. Not magically healed. But softer in a way that felt… real. Kenzo kept his promises. Not loudly. Not dramatically. Just consistently. Good morning messages became routine. Walks home became normal again. Even silence— no longer felt like distance.

Sofia noticed it in the smallest ways. The way he looked for her in a room. The way he remembered things she casually mentioned. The way he stayed even when conversations slowed down. It didn't erase the past. But it made the present easier to breathe in.

One afternoon, they sat by the courtyard again. Same place. Different feeling. Sofia leaned back against the bench. Kenzo beside her. Shoulders almost touching. Almost.

"Can I ask you something?" Sofia said suddenly.

Kenzo turned slightly. "Always."

She hesitated. Then looked at him. "Do you ever get scared I'll leave again?" The question hung between them. Quiet. Honest.

Kenzo didn't pretend. "Yeah," he admitted.

Sofia nodded slowly. "Me too," she said softly. That truth— didn't break them. It grounded them. Because they weren't pretending anymore.

Kenzo exhaled. "But it's different now," he added.

Sofia tilted her head slightly. "How?"

Kenzo looked at her. "Before, I was scared because I didn't know where I stood." A pause. "Now I'm scared… but I also know I'm choosing this every day." Sofia listened quietly. "That makes it less… unstable," he continued. "But more real."

Sofia gave a small smile. "That's a good answer."

Kenzo smirked faintly. "I'm improving."

She lightly nudged him. "Don't get used to compliments."

He chuckled. "I'll take what I can get."

For a moment— it almost felt normal. Almost. But healing doesn't erase memory. It just teaches it how to stay quieter.

Later that week— Sofia ran into Lucas again. Not planned. Not dramatic. Just coincidence.

"Hey," Lucas said gently.

Sofia paused. "…Hey." There was no tension this time. No confusion. Just closure slowly forming where uncertainty once lived.

"You look better," Lucas said lightly.

Sofia gave a small smile. "I feel better."

Lucas nodded. "That's good." A pause. "I'm guessing things worked out?"

Sofia hesitated. Then nodded. "Yeah." Not loudly. Not proudly. Just truthfully.

Lucas smiled faintly. "I'm glad." And that was it. No lingering. No unresolved feelings. Just a past that no longer demanded attention.

When Kenzo found out later— he didn't react the way he used to. No jealousy. No tension. Just quiet understanding.

"Does it bother you?" Sofia asked him.

Kenzo thought for a moment. Then shook his head. "Not anymore."

Sofia studied him. "Really?"

Kenzo nodded. "Because I trust where we are now." That— meant more than any dramatic declaration. Because trust wasn't loud. It was steady.

That night— Sofia sat by her window. Thinking. Not about losing him. But about how far they had come. From confusion. From distance. From almost breaking. Now— to something slower. Stronger. More intentional.

Her phone buzzed. Kenzo. "Did you get home okay?"

Sofia smiled softly. "Yes. I'm home."

A pause. Then— "Good. Rest well."

She stared at it for a moment. Then replied— "You too."

And for once— she didn't overthink it. Because love wasn't loud anymore. It was just there. Quiet. Steady. Real.
