Chapter 31 - CHAPTER 30: ONE LAST CHANCE

Sofia stared at the message longer than she wanted to admit. "Can we talk?" Three simple words. But they carried weight. Memories. Promises. Disappointments.

Her thumb hovered over the screen. She could ignore it. Pretend she didn't see it. Give herself the space she had just started to build. And part of her wanted to. Because silence— felt safer now.

But another part of her— the part that still cared— couldn't leave things unfinished.

Sofia closed her eyes briefly. Then typed. "Okay."

Kenzo replied almost instantly. "Tomorrow? After class?"

She hesitated. Then— "Fine." Short. Simple. Careful.

The next day felt heavier than usual. Not because anything had happened yet— but because something would.

Sofia walked into class. Kenzo was already there. Their eyes met. No smiles. No warmth. Just awareness. They didn't talk. Not before class. Not during.

Because both of them knew— this conversation mattered.

After class— they walked out together. Not side by side. But not apart either. Somewhere in between. They stopped at the quiet corner of campus. The same place. Again. It felt different now. Not like a beginning. Not like hope. But like a decision waiting to happen.

Kenzo spoke first. "Thank you for agreeing to talk."

Sofia nodded slightly. "Just say what you need to say." No softness. Just honesty.

Kenzo took a breath. "I know I've been messing up." Sofia didn't interrupt. "I kept saying I'd try," he continued. "But I didn't realize that trying without actually changing anything… was just hurting you more."

That— was the first real thing she had heard from him in days. Sofia's expression shifted— just slightly.

Kenzo stepped closer. "I see it now," he said. "The distance. The way you stopped expecting." His voice dropped. "And I hate that I caused that."

Sofia looked at him. Finally. "I didn't want to stop expecting," she said quietly. Kenzo's chest tightened. "But it started feeling like I had to," she added.

Silence. Kenzo nodded slowly. "I don't want you to feel like that with me."

Sofia crossed her arms slightly. "Then why did you let it get to that point?" That question— wasn't angry. It was tired.

Kenzo struggled for a moment. "I thought… as long as I was still here, it was enough."

Sofia shook her head gently. "It's not." A pause. "Being there physically isn't the same as being present."

Kenzo swallowed. "I know that now." Another silence. But this one— felt different. Not distant. But honest. "I don't want to lose you," Kenzo said again.

Sofia looked down briefly. "That's not enough anymore." That hit harder than anything else.

Kenzo nodded. "I know." Then he took a breath. "So I'm not going to ask you to just stay." Sofia looked up. Surprised. "I'm asking you to give me one last chance to show you," he said. Not promise. Not "try." Show.

Sofia's heart reacted— even if she tried to stay steady. "How?" she asked quietly.

Kenzo didn't hesitate. "By being consistent." "Around you. With you." "By not making you question where you stand." A pause. "And if I fail…" His voice softened. "Then you don't have to stay."

That— felt real. Because this time— he wasn't asking her to carry the weight. He was putting it on himself. Sofia exhaled slowly. Her thoughts racing. Because this was it. Another chance. But also— another risk.

"You said this before," she said.

Kenzo nodded. "I know." A beat. "That's why this time, I'm not asking you to believe me right away." Sofia looked at him carefully. "Just… watch what I do," he said.

Silence. Because words— weren't leading anymore. Actions would.

Sofia closed her eyes briefly. Then opened them. "One last chance," she said. Kenzo's breath caught. "But I won't wait forever this time," she added. Clear. Firm.

Kenzo nodded immediately. "You won't have to." And just like that— they weren't fixed. They weren't healed. But they weren't over either.

They were standing on something fragile— again. But this time— both of them knew—it wouldn't survive on words alone.
