Chapter 28 - CHAPTER 27: LEARNING HOW TO STAY

Choosing each other felt powerful. But staying? That was something entirely different.

The next few days didn't feel like a fairytale. There were no dramatic confessions. No perfect moments. Just… effort. Real, quiet effort.

Sofia noticed it first in the small things. Kenzo texting her in the morning. Not long messages. Not poetic. Just—

"Good morning. Have a good day today."

Simple. But consistent. And for some reason— that mattered more. She replied too. At first, cautiously.

"You too."

But slowly— it became easier. More natural.

"Don't forget you have that presentation today."

"Did you eat?"

It wasn't dramatic. But it was real.

At school— things were different too. Kenzo didn't keep his distance anymore. He sat beside her. Walked with her. Stayed. Not because he had to. But because he chose to.

Still— there were moments. Small ones. Where uncertainty crept in.

Like when Sofia saw Lucas across the hallway. Their eyes met briefly. And she felt it— that quiet tension. Not longing. But unfinished history.

Kenzo noticed too. Of course he did. But this time— he didn't shut down. Instead— he spoke. "That still bothers me a little," he admitted one afternoon. They were sitting under the same tree in the courtyard. The place that had become theirs.

Sofia nodded. "I understand." A pause. Then she added— "But I'm here."

Kenzo looked at her. "And I'm choosing to believe that," he said. That was new. Not ignoring his feelings. Not pretending everything was okay. But trusting her anyway.

Sofia smiled softly. "That's all I can ask for." Another moment— another quiet step forward.

Later that week— they studied together. Sofia sat cross-legged on the floor. Books scattered around. Kenzo leaned back against the bed. Trying to focus— and failing.

"You're not even reading," Sofia said, glancing at him.

Kenzo smirked slightly. "I am."

She raised an eyebrow. "Page hasn't turned in ten minutes."

He sighed. "Okay, maybe I'm a little distracted."

Sofia tilted her head. "By what?"

Kenzo hesitated. Then shrugged. "You."

Sofia blinked. Caught off guard. "Why?" she asked.

Kenzo looked at her— honestly. "Because this feels… different."

Sofia's expression softened. "How?"

He thought about it for a second. "Before, I always felt like I was about to lose you." A pause. "But now…" He looked at her again. "I feel like I'm finally with you." That— hit somewhere deep.

Sofia looked down slightly. Trying to hide the warmth rising in her chest. "We're still figuring things out," she said quietly.

Kenzo nodded. "I know." A small smile. "But at least now… we're doing it together." Sofia smiled too.

And this time— it didn't feel fragile.

But even in the comfort— there were still moments of doubt.

That night— Sofia lay in bed. Staring at the ceiling. Her phone resting on her chest.

Kenzo had messaged her earlier. "Goodnight. See you tomorrow."

She smiled at it. But her thoughts— drifted. Because love— even when chosen— still carries risk. Still asks you to trust. To stay. Even when part of you remembers what it felt like to fall apart.

Sofia closed her eyes slowly. "Let this be real," she whispered. Not perfect. Not easy. Just real.

And somewhere— in his own room— Kenzo stared at his phone too. Not texting again. Not overthinking. Just holding onto something new. Something steady.

Because for the first time— they weren't just choosing each other in one moment.

They were learning— how to choose each other every day after.
