Waiting became unbearable. Not because Sofia was weak. But because uncertainty has a way of slowly breaking you— without making a sound.
Days passed. No real conversations. No honest moments. Just distance. Kenzo didn't disappear completely. But he wasn't there either. And somehow— that hurt more.
Sofia sat on her bed that night. Her phone in her hand. Unlocked. Kenzo's name on the screen. No new messages. She stared at it for a long time. Because this— this wasn't what she wanted. Not silence. Not guessing. Not waiting.
Her chest tightened. "I can't keep doing this," she whispered. Because trying was supposed to feel like progress. Not confusion. Not like she was losing herself again. And that's when she realized something. She had been patient. She had been understanding. She had stayed. But she hadn't been choosing herself.
Sofia stood up slowly. Her decision forming— not out of anger— but clarity.
The next day— she didn't wait. She found him. Kenzo stood near the edge of campus. The same place they had talked before.
He looked up when he saw her. Surprised. "Sofia—"
"We need to talk," she said. Her voice calm. Too calm.
Kenzo nodded immediately. "Okay."
They stood facing each other. No distractions. No interruptions. Just truth.
Sofia took a breath. "I can't do this halfway anymore."
Kenzo's chest tightened. "What do you mean?"
Sofia held his gaze. "I mean I can't keep standing in something undefined while trying to protect myself at the same time."
Silence. Because he understood.
"I stayed because I believed we could rebuild," she continued. "And maybe we still can." A pause. "But not like this."
Kenzo swallowed. "Then tell me how," he said.
Sofia shook her head gently. "I can't be the only one figuring that out." That— hit.
Kenzo looked down briefly. "I've been trying," he said quietly.
Sofia nodded. "I know." A pause. "But trying without direction… still leaves us lost."
Kenzo looked at her again. Fear flickering beneath his calm. "So what are you saying?"
Sofia's voice softened. "I'm saying I need a choice."
Kenzo's breath caught slightly. "A choice?"
Sofia nodded. "Yes." A pause. "Either we do this—fully." Her eyes didn't waver. "With clarity. With effort. With commitment to actually building something."
Kenzo listened. Every word landing heavily.
"Or…" she continued, "We stop." The word hung in the air. Sharp.Final.
Kenzo's chest tightened. "Sofia…"
"I'm not asking for perfection," she said quickly. "I'm asking for certainty that this isn't just temporary."
Silence. Because that— was everything.
Kenzo ran a hand through his hair. "I'm scared," he admitted.
Sofia nodded. "I know."
"But I don't want to lose you," he added.
Her expression softened slightly. "Then don't stay in a place where losing me is inevitable." That— left no room for hiding.
Kenzo looked at her. Really looked. And for the first time— he understood what was at stake. This wasn't about small progress anymore. This was about choosing.
"I need you to tell me," Sofia said quietly. "Not later. Not someday." A pause. "Now."
Kenzo's heart pounded. Because this was it. The moment he had been avoiding. Stay. Or let her go.
