The air between them shifted the moment Sofia stepped closer. Not cold. Not distant. But tense. Like something fragile was about to crack— if one wrong word slipped out.
Kenzo stood still. His expression unreadable. But his silence— said enough.
Sofia swallowed. "Kenzo… it's not what it looked like." Her voice was soft. Careful. But even she knew— that wasn't enough.
Kenzo let out a slow breath. "I didn't say anything yet," he replied.
Sofia blinked slightly. Because that was true. He hadn't accused her. Hadn't raised his voice. But somehow—that made it worse. "Then say something," she said quietly. Because silence— was harder to face.
Kenzo finally looked at her fully. "Who is he?" Simple. Direct.
"Lucas," she answered. "A friend. From before."
Kenzo nodded once. "Before me?"
Sofia hesitated. "…Yes." That small pause— didn't go unnoticed.
Kenzo looked away briefly. Processing. "Did you… like him?" he asked.
Sofia exhaled slowly. "It didn't go anywhere," she said.
"That's not what I asked."
The tension sharpened. Sofia met his gaze. "…Yes," she admitted. Honest. Because lying now— would only make things worse.
Kenzo nodded again. But this time— his jaw tightened slightly. "And now?" he asked. That question— carried more weight than anything else.
Sofia's chest tightened. "Now is different," she said softly.
Kenzo looked at her. "How?"
She hesitated. Because the answer— was complicated. "Because of you," she said finally.
Kenzo's expression shifted. But not completely. "Then why didn't you say anything when he asked you out?" he asked.
Sofia frowned slightly. "I was caught off guard." A pause. "I didn't even know he was going to say that."
Kenzo nodded slowly. "But you didn't say no." That— hit.
Sofia's eyes widened slightly. "Kenzo—"
"I'm not accusing you," he said quickly. But his voice carried something else. Something closer to insecurity. "I just… need to understand where I stand," he added.
That softened her. Because this wasn't anger. This was fear. Sofia stepped closer. "You're not losing me," she said gently.
Kenzo let out a quiet breath. "You said it's complicated."
Sofia nodded. "It is." A pause. "Because we're still figuring things out."
Kenzo held her gaze. "And while we're figuring things out… someone else can just walk in?"
Sofia shook her head. "It's not like that."
Kenzo looked down briefly. "But it feels like that."
Silence. Because feelings didn't need logic. They just needed space to exist.
Sofia spoke again. "What are you afraid of?" she asked softly.
Kenzo hesitated. Then answered honestly. "That I'm giving everything I can right now… and it still won't be enough."
That— hurt more than anything else he had said.
Sofia's voice softened. "You're not competing with him."
Kenzo looked at her. "It doesn't feel that way."
Sofia took a breath. "Then let me be clear." She stepped even closer now. Close enough that there was no space for misunderstanding. "I'm choosing to be here," she said. "With you."
Kenzo's eyes searched hers. For doubt. For hesitation. But found something else. Certainty.
"But," she continued quietly, "I can't pretend everything is already fixed."
Kenzo nodded slowly. "I know."
"And I won't shut people out just because things between us are still undefined," she added. That— was honest. But also risky.
Kenzo exhaled. "So what are we, Sofia?" The question finally came. The one both of them had been avoiding.
Sofia didn't answer immediately. Because this— this was the hardest part. "We're… trying," she said.
Kenzo gave a faint, almost tired smile. "That's not really an answer."
Sofia's voice softened. "It's the only honest one I have right now."
Silence settled again. But this time— it wasn't just tension. It was reality.
Kenzo nodded slowly. "Then I guess I have to decide if trying is enough for me."
That— shifted everything again. Sofia's chest tightened. "Is it?" she asked quietly.
Kenzo looked at her. Long. Careful. "I don't know yet," he admitted.
And that answer— was just as dangerous as it was honest.
