Chapter 17 - CHAPTER 16: ALMOST CLOSE

Trying again didn't feel like a fresh start. It didn't feel like something new. It felt… fragile. Like walking on something that could break at any moment.

Sofia felt it. Every time they talked. Every time they walked side by side. Every time silence returned between them. It wasn't the same silence anymore.

Before, it was comfortable. Now— it was careful.

The next few days passed slowly. They started talking again. Not constantly. Not deeply. Just enough. Short conversations after class. Small exchanges. Occasional messages. It was progress. But it was also… restrained. Like both of them were holding something back.

One afternoon, they found themselves back in the courtyard. Not planned. Not discussed. It just… happened.

Sofia sat down first. A few seconds later— Kenzo joined her. The same bench. The same place. But everything felt different.

Sofia looked around. "It feels smaller," she said quietly.

Kenzo glanced at her. "The place?"

She shook her head slightly. "No… the feeling." A pause. "Before, it felt like something was starting," she added.

Kenzo didn't respond right away. Because he knew what she meant. "And now?" he asked.

Sofia looked down at her hands. "Now it feels like we're trying not to break what's already cracked."

Silence. That kind of honesty— it wasn't easy. But it was real.

Kenzo leaned back slightly. "I don't want it to stay like this," he said.

Sofia looked at him. "Then don't let it." Simple. But not easy.

Kenzo exhaled slowly. "I don't know how to be what you need," he admitted.

Sofia's expression softened. "I'm not asking you to be perfect." A pause. "I just want you to be present."

Kenzo frowned slightly. "I am here."

Sofia shook her head gently. "Physically, yes."

Her gaze met his. "But emotionally?"

Silence. Because that— was the real question.

Kenzo looked away. His jaw tightening slightly. Because she was right again. He was there. But not fully. Not the way she needed him to be.

"I'm trying," he repeated.

Sofia nodded. "I know." A pause. "That's why I'm still here."

That answer hit him harder than he expected. Because she wasn't just staying for nothing. She was choosing to stay. Even after everything.

A soft breeze passed between them. Sofia tucked her hair behind her ear this time— before he could. A small detail. But it meant something. Because before— he would've done it.

And now— she didn't give him the chance.

Kenzo noticed. Of course he did. And something about it— felt like distance.

"I miss how things used to be," he said quietly.

Sofia smiled faintly. "Me too." A pause. "But we can't go back."

Kenzo nodded. "I know."

Another silence. Longer this time. Then— without thinking too much— Kenzo reached out. Not to touch her. But just… closer. Like he wanted to. Like he was about to cross that line again.

Sofia noticed. Her heart reacted instantly. But instead of leaning in— she stayed still. Not pulling away. But not moving closer either.

And that— that hesitation— said everything.

Kenzo slowly pulled his hand back. The moment gone. Unfinished. "I don't want to rush you," he said quietly.

Sofia looked at him. "It's not about rushing." A pause. "It's about trust."

Kenzo swallowed slightly. Because trust— was exactly what he had broken.

"And trust…" she continued softly, "takes time."

He nodded. "I'll wait."

Sofia held his gaze. And for the first time in a while— she believed him. Just a little. But even then— she knew. Trying again didn't mean things would go back to how they were. Because sometimes— once something breaks— it doesn't go back to the same shape. It becomes something else. Something new. Something uncertain.

But maybe— just maybe— still worth holding on to.
