Chapter 20 - CHAPTER 19: SOFT REOPENING

Trying "slowly" sounded simple when Kenzo said it. But living it… was another story. Because slowing down meant noticing everything. Every hesitation. Every pause. Every moment Sofia didn't immediately smile back. Every time Kenzo wanted to reach for her—but didn't.

It wasn't distance anymore. It was awareness. And awareness was both a gift and a burden. Sofia felt it too. Especially during quiet moments. Like when they ended up studying together in the library again. Not in their old corner. But near a different shelf. A different table. A safer distance. Still close. But not too close.

Sofia wrote notes while Kenzo reviewed his readings. The silence between them wasn't empty. It was careful. Intentional.

Every now and then— Kenzo would glance at her. Then look away before she noticed. But she did notice. Of course she did.

At one point, Sofia spoke without looking up. "You're staring again."

Kenzo paused. "I'm not." Sofia finally looked at him. One eyebrow slightly raised.

Kenzo sighed. "…Okay, maybe a little."

That earned a small smile from her. Not big. Not bright. But real. "You used to do that a lot," she said quietly.

Kenzo leaned back in his chair. "Stare?"

Sofia nodded. "At me."

A pause. Kenzo didn't deny it. "I still do," he admitted.

Sofia looked down again. But she wasn't upset. Just… thoughtful. "That part hasn't changed," she said softly.

Kenzo's voice lowered. "Some things didn't need changing." The words lingered between them. Not heavy. Not painful. Just… honest.

Later that afternoon, they walked out together. The sun was lower now. Warm light spilling across the campus.

Sofia adjusted her bag. "You're quieter lately," she said.

Kenzo glanced at her. "I'm trying not to mess things up."

Sofia let out a small breath. "That's not your job."

Kenzo frowned slightly. "Then what is?"

Sofia slowed her steps. "To be here," she said. A pause. "Not perfect. Not overthinking everything. Just… here."

Kenzo nodded slowly. "I can do that." But he didn't sound entirely convinced.

Sofia noticed. Of course she did. "So what are you afraid of?" she asked suddenly.

Kenzo hesitated. Then stopped walking. Sofia stopped too. "I'm afraid you'll realize you're better without me," he said quietly. The honesty hit the air immediately. Raw. Unfiltered.

Sofia blinked slightly. Because that wasn't what she expected. Not anger. Not distance. But fear. She took a small step closer—not too close. Just enough to be heard without the world between them. "Kenzo…" she said softly. He looked at her. "I'm not staying out of obligation," she said. A pause. "I'm staying because I want to see if we can become something better than before."

Kenzo's shoulders loosened slightly. But the fear didn't disappear completely. It just softened. "And you?" he asked quietly.

Sofia tilted her head slightly. "Me?"

Kenzo nodded. "Are you afraid?"

Sofia hesitated. Then answered honestly. "Yes." Kenzo didn't interrupt. "I'm afraid of going back to how I felt when we broke," she admitted. A pause. "And I'm afraid that I'm still not fully healed."

Kenzo listened carefully. Not trying to fix it. Not interrupting. Just… understanding. "But I think," Sofia continued slowly, "that's why this has to be slow." She looked at him. "So we don't lose ourselves again in it."

Kenzo nodded. "I can live with that."

A quiet moment passed. Then Sofia gave a small nod toward the path ahead. "Let's go.

Kenzo followed beside her. Not leading. Not following. Just walking. Together.

And somehow— that felt like progress. Not dramatic. Not perfect. But real. Because rebuilding wasn't about rushing forward. It was about learning how to stay— without losing yourself in the process.
