Chapter 19 - CHAPTER 18: CLOSER THAN BEFORE

Kenzo kept his promise. At least… he tried to. He didn't disappear. Not in the way he used to. Not with silence that stretched into days. Not with distance that felt permanent.

Instead— he stayed. In small ways. Careful ways. A message in the morning. A question after class. A quiet "Are you home safe?" that arrived when she least expected it. Nothing overwhelming. Nothing too much. But enough to be there.

And Sofia noticed. Of course she did. Because this version of Kenzo— was different. Not fixed. Not healed. But trying.

One afternoon, Sofia found him waiting outside the lecture hall. She slowed her steps. "You're early," she said.

Kenzo glanced at her. "I wanted to talk before class started."

Sofia tilted her head slightly. "That sounds serious."

A faint exhale left him. "It might be."

That made her pause. Because Kenzo didn't usually say things like that lightly. They walked together without rushing. Side by side. But this time— the silence between them wasn't heavy. It was… shared.

"What is it?" Sofia asked gently.

Kenzo looked ahead. "I've been thinking about us," he said. Sofia didn't interrupt. Not this time. "And I realized something," he continued. "I keep trying to come back to you like nothing happened." A pause. "But something did happen."

Sofia's expression softened slightly. "Yes," she said quietly.

Kenzo nodded. "And I think I've been scared to face that properly." Another pause. "I didn't just lose you once," he admitted. "I kept breaking what we had."

Sofia looked at him. Really looked. And she didn't deny it. Because it was true.

Kenzo stopped walking. Sofia stopped too. They stood there for a moment. In the middle of everything.

"Then what now?" she asked softly.

Kenzo hesitated. "I don't want to repeat the same pattern," he said. A pause. "I don't want you to feel like you're waiting for me to change again."

Sofia's chest tightened slightly. Because that— was exactly what she had been afraid of.

"So?" she asked quietly.

Kenzo took a breath. "I want to do this differently," he said.

Sofia waited. For what "this" meant. For what "different" meant.

"I don't want to rush back into what we had," he continued. "But I also don't want to stay stuck in what we were." A pause. "I want to rebuild it."

Sofia's expression shifted slightly. "Rebuild?" she repeated softly.

Kenzo nodded. "Properly." No hesitation. Just honesty.

Sofia looked down for a moment. Thinking. Feeling. Weighing. Because rebuilding sounded beautiful. But also fragile.

"And if it breaks again?" she asked quietly.

Kenzo didn't look away. "Then I stay," he said immediately.

That— made her stop. Not because it was perfect. But because it was different.

This time— there was no escape in his words. Only intention.

Sofia exhaled slowly. "You're really trying," she said softly.

Kenzo gave a small nod. "I told you I would."

A faint smile appeared on Sofia's lips. Not full. Not bright. But real. "Okay," she said.

Kenzo blinked slightly. "…Okay?"

Sofia nodded. "Let's try." A pause. "But slowly."

Kenzo's expression softened. "Slow is fine."

And just like that— something shifted again. Not back to the beginning. Not forward to the end. But somewhere new. Somewhere careful. Somewhere uncertain. Somewhere… possible.

As they started walking again— their steps matched without trying. Not perfectly. But naturally. And for the first time in a long time— Sofia didn't feel like she was chasing something broken.

And Kenzo didn't feel like he was running away. They were just there. Together. Trying.
