Chapter 16 - CHAPTER 15: SLOWLY, AGAIN

The next morning felt different. Not brighter. Not lighter. Just… quieter in a new way.

Sofia woke up and reached for her phone out of habit. Then paused. She wasn't expecting anything. But still—she checked. No new messages. And somehow… that didn't disappoint her as much as it used to. Because something had already shifted. They had talked. Even if it was only a few words. It was enough to remind her— that whatever they had… wasn't completely gone.

Across the city— Kenzo was awake earlier than usual. He sat by his window, staring out at the morning sky. His phone rested beside him. Unlocked. Her message still there.

"What about you?"

And his reply.

"I'm trying."

He exhaled slowly. Because that was the truth. He was trying. Trying to understand. Trying to fix things he didn't know how to fix. Trying to be someone who didn't push people away. For once.

That day, they saw each other again. Not through a screen. Not through words. But in person. In the same classroom.

Sofia walked in first. Her steps slower than usual. Because now— things were different. There was no pretending anymore. No pretending they didn't matter. No pretending nothing happened.

She chose her seat. Then— a few seconds later— he walked in. Kenzo.

Their eyes met briefly. And this time— neither of them looked away immediately. Just a second longer. Just enough to acknowledge— everything.

Kenzo took his usual seat. But something felt… off.

Because now— distance wasn't just physical. It was emotional. And they both felt it.

After class ended— Sofia didn't rush out. And Kenzo didn't stay behind.

For the first time— they walked out at the same time. Side by side. Not speaking. Not yet.

It was Sofia who broke the silence. "…Hey."

Kenzo glanced at her. "Hey."

Simple. Familiar. But different now.

A few steps passed. Then Sofia spoke again. "I got your message."

Kenzo nodded. "I know."

She let out a small breath. "Thank you… for checking on me."

Kenzo hesitated. Then— "I wanted to."

That answer felt honest. And Sofia noticed. They kept walking. The air between them still quiet— but not as heavy as before.

"Are you really trying?" Sofia asked suddenly.

Kenzo looked at her. "What do you mean?"

She stopped walking. So did he. "I mean… are you trying to fix this?" she said softly. Her voice wasn't demanding. Just… careful.

Kenzo didn't answer right away. Because this— this mattered. "I don't know how to fix it," he admitted.

Sofia nodded slowly. "I'm not asking you to fix everything." A pause. "I'm asking if you're willing to try."

Kenzo held her gaze. And for the first time— he didn't look away. "I am," he said quietly. Sofia's heart reacted. Not dramatically. But enough. "But…" he added.

And that one word— shifted everything again.

Sofia's expression softened. "…But you're scared," she finished for him. Kenzo didn't deny it. Because that was the truth.

Sofia gave a small, understanding smile. "I figured." A pause. "Just don't let fear decide everything this time."

Kenzo looked at her. And something in his chest tightened. Because she was giving him another chance. Not fully. Not completely. But enough. "I'll try," he said again.

And this time— it sounded more certain.

Sofia nodded. "Okay."

They didn't say anything after that. But they didn't walk away either. Instead— they continued walking. Side by side. Not as close as before. Not as distant as strangers. Somewhere in between.

And sometimes— that's where healing begins. Not in perfect moments. Not in complete forgiveness. But in choosing— to try again. Slowly. Carefully. Together.
