Chapter 8 - Chapter 8: The Price of the Body

The transition back to reality was harder this morning. When Ji-Hoon opened his eyes, the ceiling of his room seemed to spin for a second. His muscles felt tight, not from exercise, but as if they were being pulled too tight over his bones. He realized he hadn't really looked at himself in the mirror for a few days.

He stood up and walked to the bathroom. He splashed cold water on his face and looked at his reflection. He was paler. Not a sick kind of pale, but a clean, marble-like tone. His shoulders were broader, and a smooth, tough-looking skin.

"Ji-Hoon-ah, you need to eat more," Ji-Yoon said, standing at the doorway. She looked at him with a motherly concern. "I know we are focusing on Mom's savings, but we can't let our own bodies break. If we collapse, the project stops."

Ji-Hoon nodded, rubbing his neck. "I know. My head feels a bit heavy today. I think the density is affecting my balance in the real world."

Ji-Yoon walked over and checked his forehead. Her hands were cold, but her touch was steady. "We are going to take it easy today. We will spend some of the gold on high-protein food for ourselves in the game, and we'll buy that expensive multi-vitamin Mom wanted us to take. No more skipping lunch to save money."

She was right. They were so focused on the goal that they were treating their own bodies like machines. They needed to remember that they were the foundation of their mother's new life.

[Location: Village of Oros]

When they logged in, they didn't head straight for the gates. Instead, they walked to the Oros Marketplace. This was the area where the "Wealthy" players hung out, buying expensive buff-foods and flashy accessories.

Selena and Zenith looked out of place in their ripped linen tunics, but they didn't care. They walked to a food stall that sold Roasted Highland Beef and Honey-Glazed Roots. It cost 5 silver—a fortune for a Level 3 player—but it provided a "Vitality" buff that lasted for six hours.

"Two servings, please," Selena said, laying the silver on the counter.

The merchant looked at them, surprised. "Usually, folks in rags like you are begging for scraps. You've got good coin, don't you?"

"We work hard," Zenith replied simply.

They sat on a quiet stone wall near the edge of the market and ate. The food tasted incredible—it was rich, warm, and the system sent signals of "Satisfaction" to their brains. They could feel the fatigue in their avatars' legs fading away.

"We should do this once a day," Zenith said, his voice sounding stronger. "It's not just about the blood and the cores. We need to maintain the 'Human' shell if we want to stay in the game."

"Agreed," Selena said. "We will set aside a fixed amount of gold for our own maintenance. Mom is safe, now we need to stay safe too."

The Shadow in the Ravine

They decided to return to the Sunken Ravine today. It was quieter than the marshes, and the Mud-Shelled Turtles were steady XP without the high risk of the Damp-Skin Hounds. They needed a day of "restful grinding" to let their minds recover.

As they descended into the ravine, the air felt cooler and more peaceful. The sound of the running stream was like music. They worked together in a smooth rhythm, Zenith holding the shells and Selena performing the surgical strikes.

Halfway through the afternoon, Zenith paused. He looked at a small patch of blue flowers growing near the water. They weren't alchemical ingredients. They were just flowers.

"Noona, look," he said, pointing. "They're the same ones Mom used to talk about. The ones that grew behind her grandmother's house."

Selena walked over and knelt by the flowers. She reached out and touched a petal. "She'd love these. Maybe when the game opens up more and we have better travel options, we can find a way to bring her here. Not as a player, but just to see the world."

"I'd like that," Ji-Hoon said.

They stayed by the stream for an extra thirty minutes, just watching the digital dragonflies buzz over the water. They weren't hunting. They weren't making money. They were just breathing. For the first time, they were taking care of their own mental health, letting the beauty of the game wash away the stress of the grind.

The Return

When they returned to the village, they felt refreshed. Their density was still moving, but today, they didn't obsess over the numbers.

[Human Density: 99.5%]

They logged out and found their mother sitting in the living room. She wasn't looking at bills or sketches. She was watching a movie and eating a piece of fruit.

"I bought these for you two," she said, pointing to a box of high-end vitamins and some fresh fruit on the counter. "I don't want you getting sick while you're doing your 'research'. You look a little tired lately."

Ji-Hoon laughed and gave her a hug. "We just bought some for ourselves too, Mom. Don't worry about us. We're taking care of it."

As they sat together as a family, Ji-Hoon realized that the "Bronze Foundation" wasn't just about gold and levels. It was about balance. They had to be strong so their mother could be happy.

"Day ten," Zenith thought as he ate an apple. "We're going to make it."

The road to Level 4 was long, and the road to becoming a dragon was even longer, but for the first time, Ji-Hoon felt like he had the stamina to walk every single mile.
