Chapter 14 - Chapter 14: The Quiet Market

The rainy season was slowly cooling the air in Seoul. Ji-Hoon spent the morning doing a slow set of calisthenics in his room. He moved with a heavy, deliberate grace, making sure his joints were loose. He felt a deep sense of calm. The game was no longer just a place to make money; it was becoming a rhythm that dictated his life.

"Ji-Yoon," he said, entering the kitchen where his sister was grinding coffee beans. "I checked the forums this morning. The 'Iron Wall' guild is asking for more Sap-Essence. They're trying to build a fortress gate for their new territory near the border."

Ji-Yoon nodded. "I saw. But we shouldn't sell to them directly anymore. If we keep supplying them, people will start tracking who is bringing the materials to the market. We need to use the Auction House anonymously, even if the fee is higher."

"Safety first," Ji-Hoon agreed. "And what about the marrow? If we eat too much of it, will the density drop too fast?"

"We have to watch the threshold," Selena said, her eyes narrowing. "If we hit 99% too early, the physical changes might become visible to other players. We need to stay in the 99.1% to 99.5% range until we have enough gold to move to a private property."

[Location: The Village of Oros]

The village was quiet today. Most of the mid-level players had moved on to the city of Kaelos for a festival event. Selena and Zenith sat on their bench, appearing as nothing more than low-level residents.

"The Marrow-Gnawers were a good source of XP," Zenith whispered, "but I want to try something different. What about the Silver-Leaf Herbs near the Moon-Pool? They only bloom in the fog, and I heard the local Alchemist is desperate for them."

"The herbs are easy to pick," Selena said, "but the Level 12 Mist-Stalkers protect that area. They are invisible in the fog."

"They aren't invisible to us," Zenith countered. "We don't use our eyes anymore, Noona. We feel the weight of the air. We'll know exactly where they are."

They headed toward the Moon-Pool, a small, glowing pond hidden in a valley of constant mist. The air here was thick and tasted of mint and damp earth.

As they reached the edge of the water, the fog began to swirl. A Mist-Stalker (Level 12) was moving. It was a creature of shadow and vapor, with long, ghostly claws that could bypass physical armor.

Zenith stood perfectly still. He closed his eyes. He didn't look for a shape. He felt the displacement of the mist. When the pressure in the air changed to his left, he didn't dodge; he reached out and grabbed the "nothingness."

His hands closed around a cold, solid wrist. The Stalker let out a silent, vibrating scream as it was forced into visibility.

"Got you," Zenith muttered.

The Shell-Tooth Dirk was already in motion. Selena struck where the Stalker's heart would be—a core of concentrated mana. The bone-grey blade cut through the ghostly form like a hot wire through wax.

[You have defeated 'Mist-Stalker' (Level 12).]

[Experience Gained: 800 XP (Split: 400 XP Each).]

[Total Progress: 2,020/4,500 XP to Level 4]

"400 XP," Zenith breathed, his hands still cold from the touch of the Stalker. "And the herbs... look."

Near the water's edge, the Silver-Leaf Herbs were glowing with a soft, lunar light. They were beautiful, delicate things. Selena harvested them with a gentle hand, placing them in silk-lined pouches they had bought with their turtle-shell profits.

[Human Density: 99.0%]

The number flickered. It was the first time they had hit the 99% mark. Zenith looked at his hands; the skin seemed a little smoother, a little clearer, almost like polished stone.

They spent the day by the Moon-Pool, harvesting the herbs and fending off two more Stalkers. It was a peaceful, focused kind of work. They weren't rushing. They were moving with the world.

They returned to Oros and sold the herbs for 32 Silver. The Alchemist was so happy he gave them a free bottle of Refined Stamina Potion.

"You two are a blessing," the old man said, his hands shaking as he took the herbs. "I can finally finish the medicine for the village elders."

They sat on their bench as the moon rose over Oros.

"Day 16," Zenith said.

"We're almost halfway to Level 4," Selena noted. "And the density is holding. We're doing it, Ji-Hoon-ah."

They logged out and found their mother in the kitchen, proudly showing them a small, perfectly shaped clay bowl she had made. "It's for our salt," she said, her face beaming. "A little piece of me for our table."

Ji-Hoon touched the bowl, feeling the rough, honest texture of the clay. It felt just as real as the stone in the game. "It's beautiful, Mom," he said. "The best thing in the house."
