Chapter 13 - Chapter 13: The Echo of the marrow

The morning in Seoul was unusually clear. Ji-Hoon stood in the middle of his room, testing his balance. He closed his eyes and stood on one leg, feeling the subtle shifts in his muscles. In the game, he was becoming a heavy anchor; in reality, his body felt lighter and more responsive.

"Ji-Yoon," he called out, walking into the kitchen. "I think we should look into those body-weight exercises we saw online. Not to get big, but to keep our real-world flexibility. The denser I get in there, the more I feel like I need to stretch out here."

Ji-Yoon was packing a small bag for their mother, who was heading out for an early workshop. "I agree. We can't let our real muscles get stiff while our digital ones are becoming like stone. I've already bookmarked a routine for us to do after the morning login."

Their mother, Eun-Hye, walked into the kitchen, humming. She looked at her children and smiled. "You two are so disciplined lately. It makes me feel like I should work even harder on my pottery."

"You're doing great, Mom," Ji-Hoon said, giving her a quick hug. "We're just following your example."

[Location: The Village of Oros]

The frost had melted, leaving the village smelling of wet wood and charcoal. Selena and Zenith met at their usual bench. They didn't need to check the map; they both knew where they were going.

"The Iron-Bark Treants were a good start," Selena said, her voice quiet. "But if we want to push toward Level 4, we need something with more mana-density. There is a cave near the High Slopes—the Bone-Dry Grotto."

"The Grotto?" Zenith asked. "That's where the Level 11 Marrow-Gnawers live, right? Those oversized hyena-mobs?"

"Yes," Selena replied. "Their bones are hollow, but they are filled with a thick, mana-rich marrow. It's a Rank E material that sells for 8 Silver per pound to the Alchemists' Circle. More importantly, it's exactly what your 'Dragon' logic needs to strengthen your skeleton."

They headed North, past the areas where groups of players were loudly farming wolves. As they climbed toward the Grotto, the temperature dropped. The entrance to the cave was littered with the bleached remains of smaller animals.

A Marrow-Gnawer (Level 11) emerged from the shadows. It was a jagged, ugly creature with powerful jaws and a spine that poked through its thin fur like a row of knives. It let out a high-pitched, cackling laugh.

Zenith moved into his stance. He didn't wait for the pounce. He lunged forward, his hands reaching for the creature's neck. The Gnawer snapped at him, its teeth grinding against the tough skin of his forearms.

CRUNCH.

Zenith felt the pressure, but he didn't pull back. His density was high enough now that the Gnawer's bite, while painful, couldn't crush his bones. He held the creature still, his fingers digging into its throat.

"Now, Selena!"

The Shell-Tooth Dirk flashed in the dim cave light. Selena didn't go for the heart; she targeted the spine, slipping the bone-grey blade between the vertebrae with the precision of a master butcher.

[You have defeated 'Marrow-Gnawer' (Level 11).]

[Experience Gained: 640 XP (Split: 320 XP Each).]

[Total Progress: 1,220/4,500 XP to Level 4]

"320 XP," Zenith panted, releasing the carcass. "That's the biggest jump yet."

Selena knelt and cracked open the Gnawer's femur with a heavy stone. Inside was a glowing, viscous purple marrow. She collected it into a jar. When Zenith consumed the marrow, he didn't just feel a weight in his stomach. He felt a vibration in his actual bones—a low, humming frequency that made his teeth ache in a way that wasn't altogether unpleasant.

"Another 0.1 percent," Zenith whispered. "I can feel it in my ribs, Noona. It feels like they're being reinforced with lead."

They spent the day in the Grotto, hunting three more Gnawers. Each fight was a desperate struggle of strength and timing. By the end of the day, their clothes were ruined and Zenith's arms were covered in deep bruises, but they had three jars of mana-marrow.

They returned to Oros as the sun vanished. They sold the marrow to a traveling alchemist for 24 Silver.

"This is top-grade stuff," the alchemist said, looking at the glowing jars with wide eyes. "I usually have to wait for Level 20 squads to bring this in. How did you get it?"

"We know the caves," Selena said simply.

They sat on their bench, watching the village settle into the night.

"Day 15," Zenith said, rubbing his aching arms. "We've cleared almost 2 Gold in two weeks, Noona. That's... that's a lot of pottery supplies."

"And a lot of healthy food for us," Selena added. "We're doing it, Ji-Hoon-ah. We're really doing it."

They logged out and went to the kitchen. Their mother had left a note: "Dinner is in the warmer! I'm staying late to help the teacher with a kiln firing. Love you!"

Ji-Hoon ate his soup, feeling the warmth spread through him. He looked at his hands, thinking about the marrow and the leaden feeling in his ribs. He was Level 3, he had a bone knife, and his mother was finally chasing her dreams. The foundation was no longer just bronze; it was becoming part of him.
