Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Texture of the Dark

Two weeks. It was a small milestone, but it felt significant. Ji-Hoon woke up before his alarm, his eyes snapping open in the dim light of his room. He didn't feel the grogginess he used to. Instead, he felt alert, as if his mind had been sharpened by the constant focus required in the ravine and the caves.

He walked into the kitchen and saw Ji-Yoon already there, drinking a glass of water. She was looking at their bank statement on her phone.

"We've officially saved enough to cover Mom's medical insurance for the next six months," she said, her voice soft but full of pride. "And we still have enough silver in our village stash to keep ourselves well-fed for weeks."

"Then we can afford to take a bigger risk today," Ji-Hoon said, sitting down. "The Shell-Tooth Dirk needs to be tested. The copper knife would have bounced off a Level 10 Iron-Bark Treant, but this one..."

"The Treants move slowly," Ji-Yoon added, "but their 'Sap-Essence' is a Rank E material. Alchemy guilds in the bigger cities pay 5 Silver per bottle. If we can harvest just four or five, we've made more than a week's worth of wolf hunting."

[Location: The Deep Woods - Outskirts of Oros]

The air in the deep woods was different today. A light rain was falling, turning the ground into a soft, black loam. The smell of wet bark and decaying leaves was heavy. Selena and Zenith moved through the undergrowth, their movements synchronized. They didn't speak; they didn't need to.

They found their target in a clearing where the trees grew unnaturally tall. An Iron-Bark Treant (Level 10). It looked like a gnarled, ancient oak, but its branches moved like limbs, and two glowing green knots served as its eyes. It was a "Tank" monster—slow, but incredibly sturdy.

"I'll draw its attention," Zenith whispered.

He didn't have a shield, but he had his Density. He stepped into the clearing, his feet sinking slightly into the mud. The Treant groaned, a sound like grinding stones, and swung a massive, branch-like arm.

Zenith didn't dodge. He raised his forearms, bracing for the impact.

THUD.

The blow was heavy. A normal player would have been sent flying, their bones broken. But Zenith felt the force travel through his arms and down into his legs, anchoring him to the earth. He felt solid. He felt like a rock.

"Now!" he grunted, holding the Treant's arm against his chest.

Selena blurred forward. She pulled the Shell-Tooth Dirk from her belt. The bone-grey blade didn't shine in the rain; it seemed to absorb the light. She struck at the "elbow" joint of the Treant's arm, where the bark was thinner.

In the past, the copper knife would have bent or chipped. But the Dirk, reinforced with Crawler shell and shaped by raw heat, bit deep. The serrated teeth of the blade tore through the iron-hard wood with a screeching sound.

[Critical Hit!]

[Bleed Effect (Sap-Leak) Applied.]

The Treant let out a low, vibrating roar. Thick, glowing amber sap began to leak from the wound. Selena didn't stop. She worked with the precision of a woodcarver, her golden light guiding the edge of the blade.

[You have defeated 'Iron-Bark Treant' (Level 10).]

[Experience Gained: 500 XP (Split: 250 XP Each).]

[Total Progress: 900/4,500 XP to Level 4]

"250 XP," Zenith panted, his arms vibrating from the impact. "And look at the sap. It's high quality."

Selena quickly filled their jars with the glowing amber liquid. When she finished, she looked at the Dirk. The blade was perfectly intact, the grey surface looking even polished after the friction with the iron-bark.

"It works," she said, her silver-flecked eyes bright. "We aren't limited by the village shops anymore. We can hunt anything with a physical shell."

They spent the rest of the day in the clearing. They only hunted three Treants—each fight was a long, exhausting test of Zenith's endurance and Selena's precision—but the reward was massive.

By the time the sun began to set, they had collected six jars of Sap-Essence.

They walked back to Oros in the dark. As they passed the village gate, they saw a group of Level 15 players standing around a campfire. They were bragging about their new iron swords, which they had bought for 1 Gold each in the city.

The siblings walked past them, covered in mud and sap, carrying a home-made bone knife and materials worth more than the players' entire kits.

"Day 14," Zenith whispered through the link as they sat on their bench.

"Two weeks," Selena replied. "The foundation is settled, Ji-Hoon-ah. We aren't just surviving the world anymore. We're starting to cut through it."

They logged out and found their mother waiting with a plate of sliced fruit. She looked happy, her hands still stained with the grey clay from her pottery class.

"I finished my first large vase today," she said, her eyes glowing. "The teacher said it's strong enough to last a hundred years."

Ji-Hoon took a piece of fruit and smiled. "Just like us, Mom. Just like us."
