Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Breath of the Mountain

The morning was quiet. Ji-Hoon sat on the floor of his room, stretching his legs and focusing on his breathing. He felt the air move in and out of his lungs, clear and steady. He didn't feel the strange "weight" as much today; instead, he felt a sense of control. He was learning to separate the heaviness of the game from the lightness of his real body.

He walked into the kitchen and found Ji-Yoon preparing a simple breakfast of grilled eggs and steamed greens. They ate slowly, enjoying the taste of the fresh food.

"I feel good today," Ji-Hoon said, picking up his chopsticks. "The caves were intense, but I don't feel drained. I think the high-protein meals we're buying in the village are helping."

Ji-Yoon nodded. "We have to keep that balance. If we push too hard in the woods, we lose our focus here. Mom is leaving for her morning class soon. She seems so at peace lately."

"It's because she doesn't have to check her bank balance every five minutes," Ji-Hoon said with a small smile. "Let's go back. I want to see how the North Ridge looks today."

[Location: The Village of Oros]

The village was covered in a light dusting of frost. It was a beautiful sight, the white powder clinging to the thatched roofs and the stone wells. Selena and Zenith walked through the gate, their footsteps silent on the frozen ground. They didn't have any flashy weapons or armor, just their sturdy linen clothes and their herb pouches.

They headed toward the High Slopes, an area just above the caves they had explored yesterday. The air here was thin and sharp, and the wind had a bite to it.

"The Ridge-Back Goats gather here to lick the salt from the rocks," Selena explained, her breath misting in the air. "They are Level 9. They are not aggressive, but they are very strong and have a lot of vitality. Their marrow is full of concentrated earth mana."

"Level 9," Zenith muttered, looking up at the jagged rocks. "We're Level 3. If we mess this up, it's a long walk back from the respawn point."

"We won't mess it up," Selena said firmly. "We move with the mountain, not against it."

They found a goat standing on a narrow ledge. It was a massive animal with curved horns that looked like polished obsidian. Zenith moved first, climbing the rocks with a slow, deliberate pace. He didn't use the 'Sprint' command. He just moved his body, finding the natural handholds.

When he reached the ledge, the goat turned its head, its rectangular pupils fixed on him. It didn't run. It lowered its head, preparing to shove him off the cliff.

Zenith didn't panic. He planted his feet and reached out, grabbing the goat's horns. He felt the massive strength of the animal, the sheer muscle of its neck trying to toss him aside. He didn't fight back with force. He used his own density, letting his weight sink into the stone beneath his feet.

He felt as solid as the ledge itself.

Selena appeared behind the goat, her knife flashing in the cold sunlight. She didn't need many strikes. She knew exactly where the mana-veins were. She worked with a calm, surgical precision that made the hunt look like a ritual.

[You have defeated 'Ridge-Back Goat' (Level 9).]

[Experience Gained: 400 XP (Split: 200 XP Each).]

[Total Progress: 650/4,500 XP to Level 4]

"200 XP," Zenith gasped, his heart thumping against his ribs. "That was... heavy."

Selena knelt and began the harvest. The blood was hot and thick, smelling of mountain herbs and cold stone. When she drank it, the heat spread through her chest like a hearth fire. It was a comforting, grounding sensation.

Zenith cracked the mana core from the goat's forehead. It was a dull, grey stone that felt incredibly heavy for its size. He bit into it, and the taste reminded him of the smell of rain hitting dry earth.

They spent the rest of the day on the high slopes. They only hunted three goats, but each one was an education in balance and focus. They weren't just killing for points; they were learning how to exist in a space that was meant to be dangerous.

As the sun began to dip below the horizon, painting the snow in shades of orange and pink, they sat on the peak of the ridge. They didn't talk. They just watched the world move.

Below them, they could see the distant lights of Oros. To the south, they could see the faint glow of the capital city, Primus, where thousands of players were busy shouting and trading. But up here, there was only the wind and the silence.

"I like it here," Ji-Hoon said through the party link.

"Me too," Selena replied. "It's quiet. It feels right."

They walked back down the mountain in the twilight, their movements sure and steady. They sold the goat horns to a merchant who made high-end hair combs and tool handles. He gave them a fair price and a nod of respect.

"You two have a way with the mountain," the merchant said. "Most folks come back from the ridge with broken bones. You just come back with a quiet look in your eyes."

They logged out and sat down to a dinner of hot soup and rice with their mother. She told them about the new glaze she was testing at the pottery center, her hands moving excitedly as she spoke. Ji-Hoon listened to her voice, feeling the warmth of the apartment and the strength in his own limbs.

The game was a world of ice and stone, and the apartment was a world of soup and laughter. They were two different realities, and for now, Ji-Hoon was happy to keep them exactly where they were. One was for the future, and one was for the heart. Both were his.
