Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: The Calm Before the Storm

Kai opened his eyes slowly. The safe house was quiet. Soft blue light glowed from the walls. For the first time in days, his head felt almost peaceful.

The nine Echoes were still there, but they were tired. They whispered instead of shouting.

Reginald said softly, "A fine morning for tea…"

Jax muttered, "Need… more fights…"

Even Nyxar the god was quiet. Only a low hum remained in the back of Kai's mind.

He sat up. Lira was already awake, making simple food on a small stove. Mira was still sleeping on her bed, hugging her bag of cards like a pillow.

Lira looked at him and smiled a little. "You slept well. The house magic worked. Your overlap risk dropped to 65%."

Kai touched his head. "Feels strange… quiet. I almost miss the noise."

He stood up and walked to the table. His body felt lighter. The metal skin, stone hardness, and fire warmth were still there, but they did not fight each other as much.

Mira woke up with a big yawn. "Morning! Did Kai turn into a god while I slept?"

Kai laughed. "Not yet. Still mostly me."

They ate together. Bread, canned meat, and water. Simple but good.

Mira talked with her mouth full. "So, what is the plan? Stay here forever? Or go out and collect more shiny things?"

Lira looked serious. "We stay one more day. Kai needs time to push the god fragment deeper. Then we move to the main Breaker camp. They have ways to seal god pieces."

Kai nodded. "Good. I do not want Nyxar taking control again. Yesterday was too close."

After breakfast, they cleaned the safe house and checked the supplies. Mira sorted her cards on the table.

"Look! I made new ones from the fight yesterday." She held up glowing cards. "Fire explosion card, wind slash card, shadow bind card. All rare!"

Kai looked at them. "You really turn Echo pieces into cards?"

Mira grinned. "Yes! My power is Collector. I catch what is left after fights. Then I throw them to use the power again. It is like a game deck. Want to see?"

She threw one card at the wall. It exploded with a small fire wind blast. The wall shook but did not break.

Kai smiled. "Useful. And fun."

Lira watched from the side. "Your power is strange, Mira. But it helps."

The day passed slowly. They rested, talked, and planned.

Kai told them more about his old life. "I was just a game tester. Sat in a dark room. Tested bad games. Ate cheap food. Then the beam fell and I died. Woke up with this power. Funny, right?"

Mira laughed. "From zero to hero! But with extra voices."

Lira listened quietly. "The Veil chooses broken people sometimes. Your power is broken too. That is why it can steal Echoes."

In the afternoon, Kai practiced merging powers in the small training room.

He mixed shadow step and wind dash. He moved like smoke on the wind.

Then he added fire punch. His fists burned without hurting him.

Lira watched. "You are getting better at control. The quiet time helps."

But when he tried to add stone skin, the voices woke up again.

Reginald complained, "This is not elegant."

Blaze shouted, "More fire!"

Kai lost balance and hit the wall too hard. The safe house shook.

Mira clapped. "Nice! Do it again!"

Kai sat down breathing hard. "Still not easy. The voices argue when I mix too many."

Nyxar spoke softly. **"Because you fight me. Let me guide the merges. We can create real god power."**

Kai pushed the voice away. "No thanks."

Evening came. They ate again and sat together.

Mira asked Kai, "If you could give one Echo back, which one?"

Kai thought. "Maybe the rich snob. He talks too much about wine."

Mira giggled. "But his reflexes are good for dodging!"

Lira looked at Kai with soft eyes. "You are stronger with all of them. But you must stay the leader. Not let them or the god lead you."

Kai nodded. "I am trying."

Night fell. They decided to sleep early for the long walk tomorrow.

Kai lay on his bed. The safe house magic made the voices calm again.

He almost slept.

Then the ground shook hard.

The blue lights on the walls turned red.

Lira jumped up. "Alarm! Something big is coming!"

Mira grabbed her cards. "Monsters again?"

Kai felt his radar ping stronger than ever.

**Very strong Echo detected. Dying. Close. Tenth level.**

The god Nyxar woke up fast. **"This is it. The tenth Echo. Take it. Become complete."**

Kai stood up. "No. We defend the house."

They opened the door and ran out.

The forest was chaos. A giant shadow beast , bigger than a house ,stood near the safe house. It had many eyes and long claws. Around it, twenty smaller beasts attacked.

But the giant beast was hurt. A big spear stuck in its side. Black blood flowed. It was dying.

A group of five Echo Hunters stood nearby. They were attacking the giant beast.

The leader shouted, "Kill it! Its Echo will make us rich!"

One hunter saw Kai's group. "The Thief! He is here!"

The giant beast roared in pain. Its eyes looked at Kai.

**Tenth Echo detected. God-level quality.**

Kai felt the pull stronger than anything before. All nine Echoes screamed for it. Nyxar pushed hard. **"Take it now! Or the Hunters will!"**

Mira's eyes shone. "Big shiny! Let's help kill it and collect!"

Lira held Kai's arm. "Do not. It is a trap. The god wants you to take the tenth."

Kai stood between his friends and the fight.

The giant beast looked at him like it was asking for help… or offering its power.

The Hunters attacked harder.

Kai's hands shook.

Power or control?

One more Echo and he might lose himself forever.

Or let the Hunters take it and become stronger enemies.

The sky cracked louder. Purple rain fell heavy.

Kai took one step forward.

What would he choose?
