The next morning, the safe house felt smaller. Purple light from the cracks in the sky came through the small windows. The air smelled like rain and smoke.
Kai woke up first. His body was sore from yesterday's fight, but his mind felt a little clearer. The nine Echoes were still talking, but not as loud.
He opened his status screen to check.
**[Status Update]**
**Fractured Echo Weaver – Level 5**
**Active Echoes: 9/10**
**Overlap Risk: 85% – Critical**
**Warning: God fragment (Nyxar) influence at 38%. One more Echo will likely cause full takeover.**
**Triple Merge cooldown: 12 hours remaining.**
Kai closed the screen with a sigh. "Still too close."
Lira was already packing food and water into bags. She looked at him and smiled softly. "Good morning. You look better today."
Mira jumped out of bed like she had been waiting for this moment. "Finally! Road trip time! I hope we meet more monsters on the way. I need new cards!"
Kai stood up and stretched. His metal skin made his arms feel heavy. "We leave now. The longer we stay, the more chance the Hunters or that god eye comes back."
They ate a quick breakfast, then stepped outside.
The forest looked different in the morning light. Many trees were bent or burned from last night's fight. Black marks from the beasts covered the ground. The giant shadow beast was gone — it had run away with the spear still in its side.
Mira pointed at the tracks. "Look! The big one left a trail. We could follow it and—"
"No," Lira said firmly. "We go to the Breaker camp. It is two days walk from here. We stay away from strong Echoes."
Kai nodded. He felt the tenth Echo pull even now, like a quiet whisper in his chest. Nyxar was silent, but Kai knew the god was watching and waiting.
They started walking. The path was narrow and went uphill. Purple rain started again, light but steady.
As they walked, the voices in Kai's head began to wake up more.
Reginald spoke first in a fancy tone. "This forest is positively dreadful. One requires better roads and perhaps a carriage."
Jax answered loud. "Stop complaining! Walk faster and punch any tree in the way!"
Gust added wild energy. "Run! The wind wants us to go fast!"
Kai's steps suddenly became quicker with wind dash. He almost left Lira and Mira behind.
He stopped and shook his head. "Sorry. Gust took over for a second."
Mira laughed. "Do it again! I like fast Kai!"
Lira walked beside him. "Talk to us when the voices get loud. It helps you stay grounded."
They continued. After some time, they reached a small river. The water was clear but had purple glow in it from the Veil cracks.
While they rested and drank, Mira sat on a rock and played with her cards.
She held up one glowing card. "This one is from the fire hunter yesterday. Want to see?"
She threw it lightly into the river. A small fire explosion happened under the water and made steam rise.
Kai smiled. "Your power is really useful in fights."
Mira grinned. "Yes! And fun. When you finally take more Echoes, I will make a full Kai deck. 'Voice Mix Kai', 'God Mode Kai', 'Snob Kai' — all limited edition!"
Lira looked at the sky. Her silver threads appeared for a moment. "The fate lines are moving fast. A big Veil Quake is coming in a few days. We must reach the camp before then."
Kai felt Nyxar stir inside. The god spoke quietly. **"The Quake will bring many dying Echoes. You will not be able to resist all of them."**
Kai ignored it and kept walking.
In the afternoon, they met their first trouble.
A group of small shadow beasts — six of them — jumped out from the trees. They were not very strong, but they moved fast.
Mira was ready. She threw three cards at once. "Collect time!"
The cards exploded with wind and stone power. Two beasts turned to smoke.
Lira used her threads to tie three beasts together. "Kai!"
Kai moved in. He used shadow step and punched with stone skin. His fist hit hard. One beast flew back.
But then Blaze's angry voice took over. "Burn! All of you!"
Fire burst from Kai's hands without him wanting it. The flames were stronger than before. Two beasts burned and disappeared.
The last beast ran away.
Kai stood breathing hard. "Sorry. Blaze got excited."
Lira checked him. "Your overlap went up a little. Be careful with merging or strong emotions."
Mira picked up a small piece of black crystal left from the beasts. "Free material! I can make weak cards from this."
They kept going. The sun started to go down.
As evening came, they found a small cave for the night. It was dry and hidden behind bushes.
They made a small fire and ate.
Mira asked Kai, "What is the scariest thing the voices make you do?"
Kai thought. "When they all talk at once. It feels like I am ten people fighting for one body. Sometimes I say things I do not mean. Or do things I do not want."
Lira added softly, "That is why we go to the camp. They have old seals and training to help people like you."
Kai looked at the fire. "I hope it works. I do not want to wake up one day and not know who I am."
Nyxar whispered then. **"You will always know. You will just be more."**
Kai pushed the voice down.
They talked a little more, then decided to sleep. Lira took first watch.
Kai lay down. The cave was warm from the fire.
Before sleep, he checked his status one more time.
**[Status Update]**
**Fractured Echo Weaver – Level 5**
**Active Echoes: 9/10**
**Overlap Risk: 82% – Critical**
**Warning: God fragment influence rising slowly. Avoid strong Echo sources.**
**Triple Merge cooldown: 8 hours remaining.**
Kai closed the screen and closed his eyes.
Tomorrow they would walk again.
The Breaker camp was closer.
But the tenth Echo — and the giant beast — were still out there somewhere.
And Nyxar was patient.
Kai slept, but his dreams were full of many voices and one big purple eye watching him.
