Kai stood frozen in the clearing.
The giant shadow beast lay bleeding on the ground. Its many eyes looked at him with hope and pain.
The fifteen Echo Hunters were charging closer. Their weapons glowed with stolen powers.
Mira threw card after card. Explosions rang out. "Stay back! These are my friends!"
Lira's silver threads wrapped around two hunters and pulled them down. "Kai! Make a choice!"
Kai's hand shook.
The tenth Echo was right there.
One touch.
One decision.
His status screen appeared again without him asking.

The giant beast spoke weakly in Kai's mind again. **"Please… do not let the hunters have me. Take my Echo… or end my pain."**
Kai's nine Echoes screamed:
Reginald: "A king's power is yours by right!"
Jax: "Take it and smash them all!"
Alpha Shadow: "It is family. Merge with it!"
Blaze: "Burn the hunters after you take it!"
Kai took one step closer.
Mira cheered. "Yes! Do it! I want the ultra rare card!"
Lira shouted, "Kai, no! Look at me!"
Her voice cut through the noise.
Kai stopped.
He looked at Lira. Her eyes were full of fear… and something warmer.
He looked at Mira. She was fighting hard with her cards, protecting them.
Then he looked at the beast.
"I am sorry," Kai said. His voice was a mix, but the real him was speaking. "I cannot take you. I will not lose myself."
He turned to the hunters.
"Leave the beast alone!" he shouted.
The leader laughed. "Too late, Thief! We will kill it and take its Echo. Then we will take yours too!"
The hunters attacked harder.
Kai felt anger rise. Blaze's temper mixed with Jax's fighting spirit.
He dashed forward with wind and shadow step.
His fist burned with fire and hit like stone. One hunter flew back.
Mira threw a big card. It exploded with wind power and knocked three hunters down.
Lira tied another two with her threads.
But there were too many.
One hunter slipped past and ran straight at the giant beast. He raised his glowing spear to finish it.
The beast roared weakly.
Kai saw it happen in slow motion.
He had two choices:
Run to save the beast and risk touching it…
Or let it die and let the hunters take the powerful Echo.
Time felt slow.
Kai moved.
He used every bit of speed he had.
Wind dash + shadow step + Gust's wild energy.
He became a blur.
He reached the hunter just as the spear came down.
Kai punched the man hard in the side.
The hunter flew away.
But in the chaos, Kai's hand brushed the giant beast's side.
Just a light touch.
Warm power rushed into him like a flood.
The beast's eyes closed in peace.
A huge blue screen exploded in Kai's vision.

His eyes turned deep purple.
When he opened his mouth, a completely new voice came out — deep, royal, and cold.
"I am the Shadow King now."
Mira dropped her cards. "Kai…? That doesn't sound like you…"
Lira's face went pale. "No… the god has him."
Kai (or whatever he had become) raised one hand.
Shadow energy burst out.
All the remaining hunters were wrapped in dark chains. They screamed as the shadows pulled them to the ground.
The new voice spoke again. "Weak insects. You dare challenge a king?"
He looked at Lira and Mira with glowing purple eyes.
A small part of the old Kai was still inside, screaming.
But the voices were too loud.
Nyxar laughed in triumph. **"Welcome, partner. Now we begin."**
Kai took one step toward his friends.
His hand reached out.
Mira stepped back. "Kai… fight it!"
Lira raised her silver threads, ready to fight if she had to.
The new Kai smiled with a cold, royal smile.
"What is your command… my loyal servants?"
The forest went silent.
Only the sound of the purple rain remained.
