Chapter 10 - Whispers Beneath the Throne

The next morning arrived gently, carried by warm currents brushing against my skin.I woke before anyone came for me, floating slowly upward from sleep. The palace felt different today. Not hostile… but aware.

Like a room that had fallen silent the moment someone entered.I couldn't explain it, yet I felt it immediately.Something had changed.

The glowing fish that visited my window last night were gone, but faint trails of light still lingered outside, circling lazily as if reluctant to leave. I watched them for a moment, smiling to myself before pushing the thought away.Maybe everything here simply felt magical.

Maybe I was overthinking again.

A soft knock echoed through the pearl doors.

"Enter," I said.

Moana slipped inside, followed by Triton. Both bowed slightly, though their expressions were more serious than usual.

"Good morning, Lady Marimar," Moana said.

"Good morning," I replied, studying their faces. "Did something happen?"

They exchanged a glance. That alone told me everything wasn't fine.

"Yes," Triton admitted carefully. "Word of you has spread beyond the inner palace."

I blinked. "Word of me?"

Moana nodded. "The noble houses have begun asking questions."

The warmth from yesterday faded slightly in my chest."Oh."

Of course they would.A human suddenly living in the Ocean Emperor's palace wasn't exactly normal.

"They think I'm dangerous?" I asked quietly.

Neither of them answered immediately.Which… was answer enough.

I sighed, rubbing my arms. "I haven't even done anything."

Moana's expression softened. "That is precisely why they are unsettled."

I frowned. That made absolutely no sense.

Triton added, "You breathe underwater without enchantment. The ocean responds to your presence. His Majesty allows you unrestricted movement. To the nobles… these things mean change."

Change? The word carried weight I didn't fully understand yet.

Before I could ask more, attendants arrived with breakfast…delicate shells filled with shimmering fruits and warm sea grains. The familiar cooks from yesterday had clearly been involved; one even sent a small glowing dessert shaped like a starfish.

I laughed softly. "They remembered."

Moana smiled faintly. "You have become… popular."

That made me oddly happy, maybe too happy.Because the moment we stepped into the corridor, I understood what Triton meant.

The palace still greeted me warm;guards nodded, servants smiled but now there were others watching.

Merfolk dressed in elaborate garments lingered along balconies and archways.Their jewelry shimmered with status and power. Their gazes followed me openly, assessing, calculating.

Not curious like the attendants but Judging.Whispers drifted behind me as I passed.

"That is her."

"She looks ordinary."

"Why would the Emperor keep a human?"

I kept my eyes forward, pretending not to hear, but my shoulders stiffened.

Yesterday I felt welcomed.Today I felt… examined.

We reached the grand hall where sunlight filtered down through miles of ocean above, illuminating the throne platform in pale gold.

I stopped walking, the throne was empty.Relief and disappointment hit me at the same time, confusing enough that I immediately ignored both feelings.

"Is the Emperor always absent?" I asked casually.

Triton answered, "His Majesty observes more than he appears."

I wasn't sure what that meant, but something about his tone made my pulse skip.

We continued walking when suddenly a group of nobles blocked our path.Their presence alone changed the water's pressure.

Rich fabrics drifted around them like living banners, and the leader,a tall merwoman with sharp violet eyes, studied me openly.

"So," she said, voice smooth but cold, "this is the human."

Moana straightened subtly beside me.Triton's posture hardened.

I swallowed but forced myself to meet her gaze. "Hello."

Her eyebrow lifted slightly, as if surprised I spoke directly.

"You are comfortable here," she observed.

"I'm trying to be," I answered honestly.

Murmurs rose behind her.One noble scoffed quietly. "Humans do not belong beneath the ocean."

My chest tightened, but before embarrassment could settle, another voice interrupted.

"She belongs where His Majesty permits."

A palace guard stepped forward one of the warriors from the training arena yesterday. He positioned himself subtly closer to me, not aggressively, just… protective.

The nobles noticed and expressions shifted. And suddenly I realized something important. The palace guards weren't just being polite anymore. They were choosing a side.

The violet-eyed noble's gaze sharpened. "Be careful, human. The ocean does not favor anomalies for long."

Moana stepped forward smoothly. "Lady Serapha, His Majesty has given clear orders regarding Lady Marimar."

The noble hesitated.Even speaking the Emperor's authority changed the atmosphere instantly.

After a tense moment, she inclined her head slightly and moved aside, though her eyes never left me.

"We shall see," she murmured.

They swam away, whispers trailing behind them like cold currents.

I exhaled shakily. "That… went well?"

Triton almost smiled. "Better than expected."

We continued going, but my thoughts churned.Yesterday I had been curious.Today I was becoming a problem. And I didn't even know why.

Far above, hidden behind layered coral pillars overlooking the hall, Azarus watched everything unfold. He had anticipated resistance.

The noble clans feared instability more than enemies. A human favored by the throne threatened centuries of order.Yet what interested him was not their reaction.

It was his people's response, guards intervening without command.Servants defending her presence.

Even minor officials adjusting routes so she would not encounter hostility alone. The palace itself was aligning around her.

Azarus's fingers curled slightly at his side.

Influence without effort.Attachment without authority which is dangerous and fascinating. His gaze followed Marimar as she swam away, unaware of how many eyes tracked her movement.

Unaware that political tides had already begun shifting because of her existence.

He should distance himself. That was the rational decision.Instead, his attention remained fixed on her retreating figure.

The ocean whispered faintly around him, currents brushing against his skin like quiet insistence…Protect herm…The command was not his own.

Azarus's expression darkened slightly.

He did not obey voices, not even the sea's.And yet…he did not look away.

As we returned toward the inner palace, I felt heavier than before. Not scared exactly… just aware that my presence carried consequences I didn't understand.

"Moana," I said softly, "did the Emperor really mean to keep me here?"

She glanced at me gently. "His Majesty does nothing without reason."

That answer somehow made my heart beat faster instead of calming it.I stared down the endless corridor ahead, glowing softly beneath drifting currents.

Somewhere in this vast ocean palace lived a ruler powerful enough to command the sea itself.A ruler who had spared me,watched me,protected me without explanation.

And though I still didn't know why…I had the strange feeling that my peaceful days as a simple palace guest were already ending.Because beneath the beauty of Oceania, whispers were growing louder.

And sooner or later;those whispers would reach the throne.
