Chapter 12 - The Weight of the Ocean

I didn't answer him.Not because I wanted to be difficult…but because the truth

refused to form into words.

Do you wish to leave my kingdom? The question echoed through my mind long after he asked it.

I stood in the vast throne hall, surrounded by ancient pillars carved from living sapphire stone. Beyond the transparent walls, the endless ocean stretched into darkness, enormous shadows gliding past like silent guardians of his rule.

And somehow… None of that frightened me anymore.

What frightened me was the way Azarus eyes fixed on me, waiting for my answer, not like a ruler examining a guest, not like a king judging a prisoner.

But like a man waiting for an answer that mattered to him more than it should. My fingers curled slightly at my sides. "I… don't know."

The confession came out softer than intended.

His gaze sharpened."You hesitated before answering."

"Yes."I swallowed, forcing honesty past the tightness in my chest. "When I first arrived, all I wanted was to escape. Everything was strange to me,dangerous

and overwhelming." My eyes drifted briefly around the throne hall. "But now…"

I hesitated again, taking a deep breath because admitting it felt dangerous."This place doesn't feel like a prison anymore."

Heavy and alive silence followed by confession.Azarus's shoulders shifted almost imperceptibly, as if tension he carried eased by the smallest fraction.

The ocean outside the hall stirred gently,he noticed it too.His eyes flickered toward the currents before returning to me.

"Attachment forms quickly in unfamiliar environments," he said carefully, returning to the controlled tone of an Emperor. "It does not always mean belonging."

Something about the statement felt like he was reminding himself, not me.

I tilted my head slightly. "Then why ask?"

That made him pause. For a brief moment, the Ocean Emperor seemed caught between two answers. Finally, he spoke."Because," he said slowly, "if you wished to leave… arrangements would be made."

My heart skipped."You would let me go?"

The question slipped out before I could stop it.His silver eyes held mine steadily."Yes."

The word was firm and certain. But something behind it felt… reluctant.I studied him carefully. He stood tall beside the throne,an ancient structure formed from crystallized tides and crowned with glowing pearls older than kingdoms.

Power surrounded him naturally, yet right now he looked less like an untouchable ruler and more like someone measuring loss before it happened.

"And if I wish to stay?" I asked quietly.

The temperature of the water seemed to shift. He stepped closer not threatening, not impulsive, but deliberate.

"Then the palace must change its expectations," he said.

I frowned. "Why?"

His jaw tightened slightly."Because my people already treat you as something… important."

I almost laughed. "Important? I barely understand how anything works here."

"That is not relevant."

His voice lowered."Influence does not require intention."

The truth of his words settled uneasily in my chest. I remembered the guards smiling, the cooks insisting I taste everything, the warriors straightening when I appeared.I hadn't noticed when it began. But the palace had begun revolving around me.

Azarus's gaze softened…dangerously so."You calm them," he admitted. "The palace has not felt… light in many years."

The admission sounded accidental.Like something he had not meant to reveal.

I searched his face. "And you?"The question escaped before I could stop it.

For the first time since entering the throne hall, silence stretched long between us…the Emperor did not answer immediately.Instead, his fingers moved unconsciously to the jade ring on his hand, thumb brushing across its surface in slow repetition, which is obviously his habit,a grounding motion.

I noticed it instantly. His eyes lifted back to mine.

"I observe," he said at last.

His answer wasn't a denial or confirmation but a distance, a very long one that.

But the way his gaze lingered betrayed something deeper. Before I could respond, movement stirred near the entrance of the throne hall. Two high-ranking nobles entered cautiously, clearly expecting an audience.

They froze when they saw me standing near him.Shock flickered across their faces.

They bowed deeply."Your Majesty."

Their eyes slid toward me again, unable to hide their curiosity

.Azarus's entire presence changed instantly, the warmth vanished as the Emperor returned.Cold authority filled the hall like a rising tide.

"This audience has concluded," he said without looking at them.

The nobles stiffened. "Your Majesty, the council…"

"Later."One word, which is absolute and final.

They bowed again and retreated quickly.I felt the shift immediately. The distance between us reappeared not physically, but politically. I suddenly understood something important.

In private moments, he allowed curiosity. In public… he allowed nothing.

His gaze returned to me, quieter now."You should return to your quarters.

I nodded, though disappointment surprised me.As I turned to leave, his voice stopped me.

"Marimar."

I looked back. The way he said my name felt different this time, lower, more familiar.

"You are free within this palace," he said. "No one will restrict your movement."

My brows lifted. "Even after the rumors?"

His expression hardened slightly."Especially because of them."

Understanding dawned slowly,it wasn't permission but a protection.

I bowed my head slightly before leaving the throne hall, feeling his gaze follow me until the massive doors closed behind my back. The moment I moved into the corridor, whispers erupted among nearby guards.

"She came from the throne hall…"

"The Emperor dismissed the council for her…"

"He granted her freedom…"

I moved faster, cheeks burning, inside my chest, emotions tangled hopelessly.I was confused, also filled with warmth…but fear also lingered. And something dangerously close to belonging.

High above the throne hall, Azarus remained motionless long after she left. The ocean currents circled slowly around him…unsettled. He turned the jade ring again, eyes dark with thought.

He still did not know what Marimar was.Only one truth had become impossible to ignore;since her arrival…his kingdom listened when she breathed. And the ocean itself refused to let her go.
