Chapter 13 - The Palace Watches

I realized very quickly that something had changed after leaving the throne hall,it wasn't obvious at first.Nothing dramatic happened. No announcement echoed through the palace. No servant openly treated me differently.

But the ocean felt… aware. As I swam through the corridors toward my chambers, conversations softened when I passed. Guards straightened instinctively. Servants bowed deeper than before, their expressions carrying curiosity mixed with something new.Respect.And maybe… caution.

I slowed my movements, pretending not to notice the attention, but it followed me everywhere.Had he told them something?Or had they simply guessed?

Moana was waiting outside my chamber when I arrived, hands folded neatly before her.The moment she saw me, relief crossed her face. "You have returned safely."

I blinked. "Was I in danger?"

Her lips pressed together carefully. "One is never certain after being summoned alone by His Majesty."

I laughed softly, though my heart still hadn't settled since leaving him. "He didn't threaten me."

Moana studied my expression closely, searching for something unspoken. "And yet," she murmured, "the entire palace felt the shift in currents."

I frowned. "What does that mean?"

She hesitated before answering. "The Emperor rarely dismisses his council."

Oh…So the rumors were already growing.

I entered my chamber, but rest felt impossible. My thoughts kept returning to him the way his voice lowered when he said my name, the way he watched me as though I were a puzzle refusing to solve itself.Do you wish to leave my kingdom?

The question lingered like a tide that refused to retreat.

Before I could dwell further, another knock sounded. This time it was lighter, almost hesitant. When the doors opened, two young palace attendants entered carrying trays of food and glowing fruits. Behind them hovered a familiar guard from the training arena…the one who had nearly collided with another soldier days ago.

He looked far more nervous now."My lady," he said, bowing deeply. "We wished to ensure your evening meal arrived promptly."

I smiled gently. "Thank you. You didn't have to come personally."His ears tinted faintly blue, a merfolk version of embarrassment, I realized. "His Majesty instructed that your care be… prioritized."

My heart skipped. He instructed it?The attendants exchanged excited glances but said nothing. As they arranged the food, they began asking quiet questions about the surface again about sunlight, storms, birds.

I answered easily, laughing when their amazement grew too dramatic.Somewhere during the conversation, I forgot entirely that I was supposed to feel out of place.Until a sharp voice cut through the doorway.

"How fascinating."The temperature of the room seemed to drop instantly.

Everyone turned.A woman floated just outside my chamber, surrounded by two elegantly dressed nobles. Her tail shimmered deep violet, adorned with delicate chains of pearls that marked status unmistakably high.

Her eyes settled on me with cool precision.I recognized that look immediately…not curiosity but Judgment.

"So this is the human," she said slowly, entering without invitation. "The one occupying so much of the Emperor's attention."

The attendants stiffened. The guard lowered his head respectfully but shifted closer to me, subtle, protective.I suddenly understood something important.

Not everyone in the palace welcomed me.

I straightened slightly. "I didn't mean to interrupt anything important."

Her smile held no warmth. "On the contrary. You have interrupted quite a great deal."

Moana stepped forward carefully. "Lady Serelis, His Majesty granted Lady Marimar unrestricted movement."

Ah…so this was politics.

Serelis's gaze flickered toward Moana before returning to me. "Yes. The entire court is aware." Her eyes narrowed slightly. "Which raises questions."

"What kind of questions?" I asked calmly, though my pulse quickened.

She circled slowly, studying me as though assessing a rare object.

"Humans do not survive here," she said."Yet you thrive and Guards favor you. Servants adore you. Even the ocean currents behave… differently."

Her words struck closer to the truth than she realized.I forced a small smile. "I'm just trying to be kind."

The nobles behind her exchanged doubtful looks.Serelis leaned closer. "Kindness does not move kingdoms."

Before I could respond, the guard beside me spoke unexpectedly."With respect, Lady Serelis, His Majesty himself ordered Lady Marimar's protection."

The room fell silent, even Serelis paused.

Mentioning the Emperor ended the conversation immediately. Her expression hardened not angry, but calculating.

"I see," she said softly. She turned to leave, then glanced back at me one final time.

"Be careful, human," she added. "The ocean is beautiful… but it devours what it grows too fond of."Then she was gone.

The moment she disappeared, everyone exhaled at once.Moana shook her head slightly. "Court nobles."

I laughed nervously, though unease lingered. "She doesn't like me."

The guard gave a quiet snort. "She does not like uncertainty."

After they left, I remained alone in my chamber, staring out into the vast ocean beyond the glass walls. For the first time, I understood fully.

The palace wasn't only filled with warmth and laughter,it had power and somehow… I had stepped directly into its center.

Far above, within the imperial observation balcony, Azarus stood watching the glowing corridors below. He had felt the confrontation the moment it began.

The ocean carried disturbances to him like whispers. His silver eyes darkened slightly.

"They approach too quickly," he murmured.

A royal advisor nearby bowed. "Shall restrictions be placed upon the human, Your Majesty?"

Azarus's answer came instantly."No."

The water around him stirred with quiet authority."She will not be confined."

His gaze which was protective and unyielding returned toward the direction of Marimar's chambers"They will learn," he said softly, "that she stands under my tide."

And throughout the palace, the currents shifted again…as if the ocean itself agreed.
