Chapter 15 - The Forbidden Garden

Sleep did not come easily that night. The palace had grown quiet hours ago, yet my mind refused to follow. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the training arena again: the sudden silence, the way warriors straightened when he entered, the unmistakable shift in the water when Azarus looked at me.'You appear… comfortable here'.The words lingered.

So did the strange tension beneath them.I floated near the chamber window, watching the endless ocean stretch beyond the palace walls. The darkness underwater wasn't empty. It breathed. Distant creatures glowed faintly as they passed, and currents moved like slow thoughts drifting through an ancient mind.

Somewhere along the way, the ocean had stopped feeling hostile, that realization unsettled me.I no longer felt like a visitor.I felt… placed here.

A soft knock interrupted my thoughts. Before I could answer, the doors opened.Commander Magnus entered, posture perfectly formal."Lady Marimar," he said, bowing slightly. "The Emperor requests your presence."

My pulse quickened."At this hour?"

"Yes."

No explanation followed.Of course not,

Nothing about Azarus ever came with explanations.I followed Magnus into the corridor, my curiosity battling growing nerves.

The palace felt entirely different at night. The bright daytime currents dimmed into deep sapphire hues, and bioluminescent coral illuminated the halls with soft silver light.

We walked farther than usual.Past familiar wings and guarded entrances.

Until Magnus suddenly stopped."The Emperor awaits beyond," he said.

I blinked. "You're not coming?"

He shook his head once as he left…just like that.

I turned slowly.Azarus was at the end of the corridor, looking ordinary without any guards,no attendants nor his crown on his head.

The absence of ceremony somehow made him more overwhelming. His dark robes drifted gently around him, silver hair moving with the current like moonlight caught underwater.

His eyes found mine immediately as if they had been waiting."Come," he said quietly.

I followed him as we moved through corridors I had never seen before. The polished pearl architecture gradually changed into older structures; coral grown wild, stone carved by time rather than design.

The lighting dimmed as the palace noise faded.

"My Emperor," I said carefully, "where are we going?"

"Somewhere forbidden."

That answer did not comfort me.Massive gates appeared ahead, covered in ancient markings that pulsed faintly as we approached.

The moment Azarus stopped before them, the doors opened on their own and I forgot how to breathe because my eyes beholded A very magnificent garden stretched before us.Coral trees rose like glowing towers. Floating blossoms shimmered in colors I had no names for.

Tiny luminous fish drifted through the water like scattered stars, and ancient ruins rested among growing vines as if the ocean itself had chosen to preserve memories here. The water felt warmer, gentler and sacred.

"It's beautiful," I whispered.

"It is forbidden," Azarus replied.

I turned to him."No one comes here?"

"No noble," he said. "No guard. No servant."

"Then… Why bring me?"

He moved beside me, gaze sweeping across the garden with unexpected softness."This place existed before my reign," he said. "Before conflict between our worlds. It reminds me of a different ocean."

I watched the glowing plants sway

…peace lived here,real peace."You trust me," I said quietly.

His jaw tightened slightly."I do not understand why," he admitted. The honesty startled me.

Since arriving, Azarus had always been controlled…measured, distant and untouchable. But here… something shifted.

"Since you came," he continued, "my palace has changed. My court speaks your name,My warriors seek your attention."His silver eyes settled fully on me."And I find myself watching you more than I should."

My heartbeat stumbled. The water between us felt suddenly smaller.

"You make my kingdom forget caution," he said softly. "That makes you dangerous."

I swallowed. "Then why keep me here?"

He stepped closer."I have ruled for centuries without hesitation," he murmured. "Yet sending you away is the one decision I delay."

The confession wrapped around me like a warm current. For a moment, neither of us moved.Glowing petals drifted between us.

My voice came out barely above a whisper. "You confuse me."

A faint breath escaped him, almost a

laugh, almost something sad."You are not alone in that."

I turned away slightly, reaching toward one floating blossom. The moment my fingers touched it, the flower brightened.

Light spread outward, then another flower glowed one another. The entire garden responded.Ripples of light moved through the water, awakening ancient symbols carved into nearby ruins.

Azarus stiffened.

I pulled my hand back. "Did I do something wrong?"

His gaze sharpened, studying the garden, then me."This garden answers only to royal blood… or chosen bond."

My stomach tightened."I'm neither."

The symbols pulsed brighter anyway, the water hummed softly around us.Azarus looked at me differently now not as Emperor observing a human, but as someone confronting an impossible truth.

Before either of us could speak, a deep, low, urgent and dangerous alarm echoed through the palace.

Azarus's entire presence changed instantly. The Emperor returned, cold authority wrapped around him like armor.

"Someone sensed the activation," he said.

My chest tightened. "Because of me?"

"Yes."

He moved in front of me instinctively, shielding without thinking."They were not meant to know you were here."

The garden lights dimmed slowly, as if retreating back into secrecy.I suddenly understood something terrifying.

This place had reacted to me,not politely nor accidentally, the truth is that It had recognized me.

Azarus turned toward the exit, voice firm."We must leave."

But before we exited, his hand hovered briefly near mine, not touching, yet close enough that I felt the warmth of his presence.A silent promise and warning.

The moment we returned to the corridor, distant movement echoed through the palace.Guards rushing, currents shifting and whispers already beginning. And deep in my chest, realization settled heavily.

The palace that had started accepting me will now change to questioning me.And jealousy…was about to become something far more dangerous.
