Life inside the Ocean Palace quickly became something I never expected.
Routine. Each morning I woke to soft glowing light filtering through living coral walls. The ocean greeted me gently now, currents brushing my skin like familiar hands instead of something foreign and overwhelming.
I no longer counted breaths, rather I simply breathed. And that realization frightened me more than anything else.
Moana arrived shortly after sunrise as usual, bringing news of the day while attendants prepared my clothing. Word spread quickly through the palace, and somehow everyone seemed to know where I would be before I even decided myself.
"Training arena first," she said, adjusting the sea silk around my shoulders. "The guards requested your presence."
I blinked. "Requested?"
Her smile held amusement. "You have become… popular."
Heat rushed to my cheeks.I followed her through the corridors, already noticing how easily people greeted me now. Servants waved openly. Scholars nodded respectfully. Even passing warriors slowed just enough to acknowledge me.
The palace no longer watched me like an anomaly…they welcomed me.
When we reached the training arena, the energy shifted immediately. Powerful currents clashed as warriors practiced combat techniques, shaping water into blades and shields. The moment I entered, several guards paused mid-movement.
One nearly lost control of his current again.Laughter echoed around the arena.
"You're distracting them," Moana whispered.
"I'm just watching from here," I muttered.
The guard approached carefully, bowing."Lady Marimar, would you… observe today's drills?"
Observe?not specimen… Not a human guest…Just… me.I nodded, settling near the edge while they resumed training.
Warriors demonstrated techniques proudly, clearly aware of my attention. One explained how currents could be shaped differently depending on emotion.
Another insisted I try touching a controlled stream of water magic.I hesitated but reached forward. The current wrapped around my fingers instantly…which felt so
warm and gentle.Instead of resisting me, it flowed smoothly along my skin.
The guards exchanged surprised looks.
"That never happens," one murmured.
"Magic usually pushes humans away."
I pulled my hand back quickly, suddenly self-conscious. "Maybe it's just being polite."
They laughed, but curiosity lingered in their eyes.Time passed easily after that.
Someone brought me sweet coral fruit.Another adjusted the current near me so I wouldn't drift. Conversations grew louder, freer.
I found myself laughing again. And without realizing it… I drifted closer to them…closer than a royal guest should.
One younger warrior began explaining battle formations enthusiastically,
swimming beside me as he demonstrated movements. His excitement was infectious, and I followed along clumsily, nearly spinning in the wrong direction.
The arena erupted in amused cheers."You learn quickly!" he said.
"I absolutely do not," I laughed.
But I didn't notice the sudden stillness spreading across the chamber.
Didn't notice warriors straightening, didn't notice currents lowering in quiet submission.I only realized something was wrong when Moana bowed deeply beside me.
A familiar voice echoed across the arena."Continue."
Everything froze anyway…I turned slowly.
Azarus had entered…he moved through the water like a living storm restrained by sheer will. No announcement preceded him, yet authority followed in his wake so completely that even the currents seemed to kneel.
His silver eyes landed on me immediately. Not the warriors nor the commanders but me an ordinary human. My laughter faded under that gaze.
He approached without hurry, observing the arena before stopping a short distance away. The warrior beside me quickly moved back, lowering his head respectfully.
I suddenly felt very aware of how close I had been standing to him moments before.
"You train diligently," He said to the guards.
"Yes, Your Majesty," they answered in
unison.
His gaze never left me."You appear… comfortable here."
I swallowed. "They were teaching me."
"I see."The words were calm.
But the water around him tightened subtly. The Emperor's attention shifted briefly to the young warrior who had spoken with me. The guard stiffened under the silent scrutiny.
Azarus said nothing threatening,he didn't need to.The warrior stepped back another distance instinctively.
Only then did Azarus's posture relax slightly, realization dawned slowly. Was he… irritated? The thought felt impossible.
He turned back to me. "You move freely throughout the palace."
"You said I could," I replied carefully.
A faint pause followed.
"Yes," he said quietly. "I did."
His eyes swept across the arena again, taking in every lingering gaze directed toward me.The warriors suddenly found their drills extremely important.
Azarus extended a hand not touching, simply guiding. "Walk with me."It wasn't an order.
But refusal never crossed my mind.We left the arena together, silence following us through the corridors. I felt dozens of curious stares at our backs.
After several moments, I gathered courage. "Did I do something wrong?"
"No."The answer came immediately.
"Then why did everyone look terrified when you arrived?"
A faint breath escaped him, almost amusement. "They were not terrified."
I raised an eyebrow. He glanced at me briefly. "…Only cautious."
We continued drifting through quieter halls.
"You adapt quickly," he added. "My people dosn't trust easily. Yet you have earned their ease."
"I just talk to them," I said. "They're kind."
His expression grew thoughtful."Yes," he murmured. "They are."
Silence settled again, heavier this time.
Finally, he said,"You should exercise caution."
"With… making friends?"
"With attachment."The word lingered between us.
I frowned. "You keep warning me about that."
He stopped moving.I nearly drifted into him before catching myself. His gaze lowered slightly, studying me with unsettling intensity."The ocean protects what it claims," he said softly. "And my kingdom has begun to claim you."
My heart skipped."And you?" I asked before thinking.
The question surprised both of us.For a brief moment, the Emperor did not answer.
Something unreadable flickered in his silver eyes.
Then he turned away, resuming movement toward the grand corridor."I observe," he said finally. But the water around us warmed noticeably.. and somehow, I knew that wasn't the full truth.
As we parted near my chambers, he paused once more."Rest well, Marimar."
My name sounded quieter this time…he left before I could respond.Only after he disappeared did I notice palace servants whispering excitedly nearby.
Word would spread again…the Emperor had come to the training arena. Not for inspection nor for war but for me a mere human.
And somewhere deep in the ocean, currents shifted restlessly
as if jealousy itself had learned how to breathe.
