I realized it the moment morning arrived.
Something had changed not loudly, not openly. But unmistakably.
Servants who once greeted me freely now bowed deeper than necessary.Conversations stopped half a second too late when I passed. Even the currents felt heavier, carrying whispers faster than voices ever could.
The forbidden garden hadn't remained secret.Nothing ever did in a palace.
Moana entered my chamber earlier than usual, her expression carefully composed which immediately worried me.
"You are summoned," she said gently while the attendants prepared my attire.
My stomach tightened. "By the Emperor?"
She hesitated."No."
That single word felt worse.
"The Imperial Court requests your presence."
I turned toward her fully. "The court?"
She nodded. "The High Nobles have gathered this morning."
Understanding dawned slowly. They wanted to see me, because it seems I have turned into a huge problem. The journey to the court hall felt entirely different from every previous summons.
Guards lined the corridors in formal formation, armor gleaming under ceremonial light. They didn't smile nor greeted me as they observed.
The massive doors to the Imperial Court opened slowly, revealing a chamber even grander than the throne hall. Circular tiers rose upward like an amphitheater carved from living sapphire. Noble merfolk occupied each level, adorned in flowing robes woven with pearls, gemstones, and ancient insignias.
Their attention fell on me instantly.Hundreds of eyes swallowed me whole with judgments.
We moved forward alone. For the first time since arriving in the ocean kingdom… I felt
human again.Small and exposed.
At the center stood the Emperor's throne elevated above the assembly.Azarus was already there. He sat upright, expression unreadable, silver gaze calm yet impossibly sharp. Authority radiated from him effortlessly, yet when his eyes met mine, something softened for the briefest moment. He had expected this too.
I bowed carefully."My Emperor."
His voice carried across the chamber."Rise, Marimar."
Murmurs spread immediately, obviously because he didn't call me a guest or a human rather he used my name directly.
A tall noblewoman rose from the upper tier, her long fins shimmering like blades."Your Majesty," she said smoothly, though her eyes never left me, "the court seeks clarification."
Her tone remained respectful but her intention did not.
Azarus leaned slightly against the throne
arm. "Speak."
"The human moves freely within the palace. She trains among warriors. She appears beside you without formal declaration."
Soft agreement rippled through the nobles.
Another voice joined. "And now… ancient wards awaken."
My breath caught. They knew about the garden.
Azarus's expression did not change."The palace remains under my authority," he said calmly.
"Of course," the noblewoman replied. "But
tradition exists to protect the empire."
Her gaze sharpened toward me."Humans do not survive our waters. Yet she thrives. Magic responds to her. The people grow attached."
Every word felt like a stone placed carefully against my chest.
"This court asks," she finished, "what role does the human hold in your kingdom?"
Silence immediately fell as they awaited his response.
Azarus did not answer immediately.
Instead, he rose from the throne. The entire court lowered instinctively.Power moved with him as he descended the steps with his shimmering tail towards me.
I suddenly understood something terrifying. This wasn't only about me.It was about him choosing a position publicly.
He stopped beside me.Close enough that I felt protected simply by his presence.
"The human," Azarus said evenly, "is under imperial protection."
Murmurs intensified.
"That protection appears… personal," another noble said carefully.
His silver eyes turned cold."Yes."
The single word struck like thunder. The chamber fell silent.Even I stopped breathing.
The Emperor continued, voice calm but absolute."She remains because I permit it." He didn't say this out of anger nor defense but fact.
The noblewoman inclined her head slightly. "Then forgive the court's concern, Your Majesty… but attachment clouds judgment."
The accusation lingered openly now.My heart pounded.
Azarus's presence sharpened dangerously."My judgment," he said quietly, "has preserved this empire for centuries."
The water pressure warningly shifted subtly. The nobles lowered their gazes. But tension did not disappear rather It changed shape Politically,Calculating and watching.
Azarus turned slightly toward me then, voice softer though still audible."Remain at my side."
The words startled me more than the court itself but I swallowed the lump in my throat and obeyed.
Standing beside the Emperor felt unreal, like stepping into a role no human should ever occupy. And the court noticed everything, every glance, every inch of distance between us.
After several moments, Azarus addressed the assembly again."The matter is concluded."
And there was a dismissal. The nobles bowed, but as they dispersed, many eyes lingered on me dangerously.
The watching had begun. When the chamber finally emptied, I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.
"That went badly," I murmured.
Azarus glanced at me."No."
I blinked. "They looked ready to exile me."
"They looked," he corrected quietly, "for weakness."
He studied me for a long moment." But you did not show any."
Warmth spread unexpectedly through my chest. We began moving from the hall together.
"Will they stop?" I asked.
His answer came without hesitation."No."Honesty again.
"They will observe you," he continued. "
"Test you. Some will attempt to provoke a reaction."
"Because of rumors?" I asked softly.
He stopped moving as his gaze lowered to mine, making me gulp down.
"Because," he said, voice quieter now,"they believe I am beginning to value you."
My pulse quickened."And are you?" I asked before courage abandoned me.
The question lingered dangerously between us.For a moment, the Emperor said nothing.
"Yes."
The word was barely above a whisper. But it changed everything.Footsteps echoed nearby before I could respond. Advisors approached, forcing distance between us once more.
The Emperor returned,composed and
untouchable.Yet as he moved away, his hand brushed lightly against mine, accidental enough for witnesses. But it was intentional enough for me.And across the palace, I felt it clearly.
The tides were shifting again.
Only now…the entire empire was watching us drown together.
