Chapter 32 - Ch32: Beast Instinct

Chapter 32: Beast Instincts

After observing the first subtle changes among the humans of the Central River Plains, Alicia turned her attention back toward the Deep Forest.

If the humans were beginning to show signs of spiritual awareness, then the beasts should logically be changing too.

And unlike humans—

beasts were rarely subtle.

Alicia already knew that much.

Humans adapted through caution, pattern recognition, and social learning.

Beasts adapted through:

instinct

survival pressure

environmental dominance

and occasionally doing something incredibly reckless for reasons no one could explain

So naturally, Alicia expected this observation period to be… eventful.

She was not disappointed.

The effects of the Deep Forest Minor Spiritual Vein had become more noticeable over time.

The forest itself was denser with vitality now.

The undergrowth was healthier.

The trees held more Life Energy than before.

And the surrounding Soul Power no longer drifted randomly through the region—it now circulated with a quiet, stable rhythm.

The whole place felt more spiritually alive.

And the beasts had noticed.

Very clearly.

Alicia observed as more and more forest creatures gradually began moving closer toward the regions of denser energy.

At first, it was only small things.

Minor shifts.

Animals choosing better resting spots.

Predators patrolling slightly different paths.

Certain creatures returning more often to specific energy-rich areas.

But as the days passed—

those subtle changes began turning into patterns.

And patterns, Alicia had learned, were where important things started.

She focused her awareness deeper into the forest.

Then almost immediately sighed.

"…Of course."

Because the silver fox was there again.

Sitting under the exact same spiritually rich tree as before.

Looking peaceful.

Looking calm.

Looking profoundly suspicious.

Alicia stared at it for a long moment.

"…You are absolutely taking advantage of this."

The fox blinked lazily.

Which Alicia interpreted as guilt.

There was no evidence for this.

But she felt correct anyway.

Still, she could not deny the obvious.

The fox had an unusually strong instinct for spiritual zones.

It had been one of the very first beasts to repeatedly settle near the forming Spiritual Vein.

And unlike many of the other creatures, it did not simply react to the richer environment.

It seemed to actively prefer it.

That was important.

Alicia mentally filed that away under:

"Things That Will Probably Become Relevant Later."

Then she widened her observation.

And what she saw next immediately confirmed something important.

The beasts were becoming more territorial.

Not wildly.

Not chaotically.

But clearly.

A large horned herbivore that once wandered freely through several parts of the forest had begun spending more time near one of the denser Life Energy zones.

A smaller predator species that used to hunt across broader ground now repeatedly circled a spiritually enriched clearing.

Even groups of scavenger-type creatures were beginning to gather around areas where environmental energy made food and plant life slightly more abundant.

Alicia watched this quietly.

Then nodded to herself.

"…Yep. That tracks."

Because from a cultivation-world perspective, this made perfect sense.

The moment certain regions became more beneficial—

life would compete for them.

Not because the beasts understood "cultivation" in any intelligent way.

But because instinct always moved toward survival and advantage.

And Spiritual Veins were advantage.

That meant the world had entered a new stage.

Not just "stronger life."

But competitive life.

And competition was dangerous.

But also useful.

Very useful, actually.

Alicia kept watching.

Over time, she began noticing something else too.

The beasts did not all react to Soul Power in the same way.

That realization made her focus much more seriously.

Some beasts seemed to respond through:

sharper reflexes

improved physical coordination

more aggressive territorial behavior

Others responded more through:

heightened awareness

better movement patterns

more efficient hunting or escape instincts

And a few—

a very small few—

seemed to show signs of both.

Alicia went still.

Because that meant beast development was not just "stronger bodies."

There were already early hints of divergent beast paths.

That was huge.

And honestly?

Alicia loved that.

Because a world where all beasts evolved in the same boring way would be disappointing.

But if different beasts responded differently based on:

species

region

instinct

and environment

Then that meant her world had much deeper long-term potential than she had originally thought.

Alicia approved immediately.

Then, naturally—

something stupid happened.

A mid-sized forest predator, emboldened by the denser energy around the Deep Forest Spiritual Vein, attempted to claim a spiritually rich resting area near a large tree.

Unfortunately for it—

the silver fox was already there.

Alicia instantly focused harder.

Because this was the first time she was seeing another beast directly challenge the fox over territory.

The predator gave a low warning growl and stepped forward.

The fox remained seated.

Still calm.

Still lazy-looking.

Still incredibly annoying.

Alicia narrowed her awareness.

"…Okay. Let's see what your deal is."

The predator lunged.

The fox moved.

And Alicia immediately froze.

Because the movement was far too clean.

Not overwhelmingly fast.

Not absurdly powerful.

But efficient.

Sharp.

Controlled.

The fox sidestepped with minimal effort, using almost no wasted motion at all.

The predator stumbled slightly from the failed lunge.

And before it could fully recover—

the fox struck once with its paw.

A small, precise hit.

Nothing dramatic.

But it landed perfectly against the predator's face.

The larger beast recoiled in confusion and pain, clearly more startled than injured.

Then the fox simply stood there.

Tail still.

Eyes calm.

As if to say:

"You tried. That was unfortunate for you."

Alicia was silent for three full seconds.

Then:

"…Excuse me?"

She replayed the interaction in her mind.

Because what she had just seen was not brute strength.

It was control.

The fox had not overpowered the predator.

It had outread it.

Outmoved it.

Outtimed it.

That was not normal beast behavior.

At least, not entirely.

The fox had instinct, yes.

But that looked suspiciously close to technique.

And Alicia did not like how much that concerned her.

She stared at the fox.

The fox sat back down beneath the tree.

Like nothing had happened.

Like it had not just casually embarrassed a stronger predator in front of the forest.

Alicia was genuinely offended.

"…Why are you like this?"

The fox ignored her completely.

As always.

But the moment still mattered.

Because it confirmed something very important.

Beasts were not simply becoming stronger.

Some of them—

especially the more spiritually compatible ones—

were beginning to become smarter in how they used their strength.

That was far more interesting than simple power growth.

And potentially much more dangerous later.

Alicia kept watching the forest over the next stretch of time.

The patterns became clearer and clearer.

The Deep Forest Spiritual Vein was not just helping beasts survive better.

It was creating:

territorial centers

instinct-based hierarchies

natural competition

and subtle pressure for adaptation

Which meant the beasts were slowly entering the earliest phase of their own development path.

Different from humans.

More primal.

More direct.

But no less important.

Then Alicia noticed something else.

One of the smaller climbing beasts, after repeatedly staying near a spiritually enriched tree cluster, had developed slightly stronger body coordination and better balance than others of its kind.

A nearby predator had become more efficient at conserving energy during movement.

A horned beast had grown noticeably more durable after frequenting a harder, rougher part of the forest near dense root systems.

Alicia stared quietly at these changes.

Then thought:

"…Okay."

"So beasts are basically cultivating through life choices and violence."

Which, to be fair, was not entirely surprising.

Still, it was useful information.

Very useful.

Because if humans would likely grow through awareness, structure, and eventually learning—

then beasts would likely grow through:

territory

instinct

adaptation

pressure

and environmental advantage

That meant their future paths would naturally diverge.

And that was exactly what Alicia wanted.

A real world should not produce identical outcomes from every race.

It should create difference.

Identity.

Conflict.

Potential.

This was good.

Very good.

Then the system chimed.

Ding!

A small panel appeared before her.

[Race Observation Notice]

Beast Race — Instinctive Spiritual Adaptation Detected

Current Status:

environmental territory response increasing

physical adaptation pathways beginning

instinct-based Soul Power absorption present

Evaluation:

The beast race has entered the earliest stage of natural instinct cultivation.

Alicia read the final line twice.

Then slowly smiled.

Not because it was dramatic.

But because it fit perfectly.

Humans were beginning through awareness.

Beasts were beginning through instinct.

Two different starting points.

Two different futures.

That was exactly the kind of layered world-building she needed.

Then, just as Alicia was quietly enjoying this realization—

the silver fox suddenly stood up.

Its ears twitched.

Its posture sharpened.

And for the first time in a while—

it looked serious.

Alicia's awareness narrowed instantly.

Because the fox was no longer focused on another beast.

No.

It was staring toward the deeper part of the forest.

Toward the ground.

Toward the place where the hidden underground pulse still rested beneath the Spiritual Vein.

Alicia immediately sharpened her awareness too.

The fox remained still.

Alert.

Focused.

And then—

very faintly—

the underground pulse stirred again.

Stronger this time.

Alicia froze.

Because for the briefest moment—

the pulse did not just "exist."

It responded.

As if something beneath the forest had noticed the fox.

Or perhaps—

noticed the changes in the world above it.

Alicia went completely silent.

Because if the thing beneath the forest was beginning to react more often now—

then whatever was hidden down there…

might not stay dormant forever.
