Chapter 31 - Ch31: The First Human Change

Chapter 31: The First Human Change

After successfully establishing a second Minor Spiritual Vein in the Central River Plains, Alicia decided to do something very important.

Observe.

Which, in her opinion, was a highly underrated skill.

Because every time she rushed into things too quickly, the universe usually responded by handing her:

cosmic threats

suspicious underground mysteries

or system notifications that felt personally offensive

So this time, Alicia chose patience.

For once.

She focused her awareness on the human settlements that had gradually formed around the river plains.

Compared to the beasts, humans were… strange.

Not in a bad way.

Just different.

Beasts adapted quickly through instinct.

Humans adapted more slowly—but in more unpredictable ways.

They grouped together.

Learned from one another.

Repeated useful behaviors.

And perhaps most importantly—

they seemed to carry the faintest traces of something that Alicia could only describe as potential.

Raw potential.

Unrefined.

Still very small.

But there.

Alicia quietly watched them as they moved through their daily routines.

Some were gathering fruits and roots.

Some were attempting primitive hunting with sharpened sticks and stones.

Others stayed near the safer water-rich areas, watching the surroundings carefully.

The humans still lacked language complex enough for anything advanced.

Still lacked true culture.

Still lacked civilization.

But compared to when life had first emerged on her planet—

they had already come very far.

Alicia observed them silently for a while.

Then thought:

"…You know, for creatures with no proper clothes and extremely questionable survival decisions, you're doing surprisingly well."

It was not meant insultingly.

Just factually.

One human in particular caught her attention.

A young male, not yet fully grown.

Physically lean, but more alert than most others around him.

Unlike the rest of his group, he often paused.

Watched.

Listened.

He was not the strongest.

Not the fastest.

But his awareness was noticeably sharper.

Alicia focused on him a little more.

He was standing near the riverbank, staring into the flowing water.

At first, Alicia thought he was simply looking for fish.

Then she noticed something odd.

He was not just looking.

He was… feeling.

Alicia's awareness sharpened immediately.

The boy's body remained still, but his senses seemed strangely focused on the water itself.

More specifically—

on the subtle flow of Soul Power moving through it.

Alicia went silent.

Then slowly thought:

"…Wait."

The boy suddenly reached into the river.

His hand moved with unusual precision for someone his age.

A moment later, he pulled out a small river creature with almost no wasted motion.

Alicia froze.

That was not luck.

That was instinct sharpened by something more.

He had not seen it clearly with his eyes.

He had sensed the movement.

Not fully.

Not consciously.

But enough.

Alicia stared at him for a second longer.

Then thought:

"…Oh."

Then:

"…Oh, that's actually big."

Because if one of the humans had already begun unconsciously responding to Soul Power—

then the effects of the Central River Plains Spiritual Vein were beginning to manifest faster than expected.

That was extremely important.

Alicia immediately widened her awareness and began carefully observing the nearby humans in more detail.

And slowly—

subtle patterns began appearing.

A woman near the riverside moved more efficiently than before, her balance and reflexes slightly improved.

A child reacted more quickly to a falling branch than normal.

A hunter who had once missed often now struck prey more consistently.

None of it was dramatic.

None of it was "cultivation" yet.

But it was there.

A very faint, very early spiritual adaptation.

And because Alicia was Alicia—

she immediately became both interested and mildly smug.

"…Ha."

"I knew making the plains spiritually balanced was a good idea."

To be fair, she had known that.

But it was still satisfying to see actual proof.

Alicia studied the changes more deeply.

Unlike beasts, whose bodies seemed to respond to Soul Power through instinct and environmental pressure, humans appeared to respond in a more subtle and flexible way.

Their adaptation was not just physical.

It was also perceptive.

Their senses.

Their awareness.

Their pattern recognition.

Their ability to learn.

That made them different.

Potentially very different.

Alicia slowly began to understand something.

If beasts were naturally better at body-first growth—

then humans might be better at understanding-based growth.

That did not mean they were stronger.

Not yet.

But it meant their future path might be very dangerous in a completely different way.

Alicia approved.

Quietly.

Because a world with only beasts becoming strong would be interesting.

But a world where humans and beasts evolved differently?

That was much more exciting.

And much more useful long-term.

As she continued observing, the young human boy from earlier sat near the river again.

This time, he was not hunting.

He simply stared at the water.

At the wind.

At the moving grass.

At the world around him.

Alicia narrowed her awareness.

Then realized—

he was doing it again.

Without understanding why, he seemed drawn to places where Soul Power gathered more naturally.

Not consciously.

Not intentionally.

But instinctively.

He was beginning to sense harmony.

Alicia was honestly impressed.

"…Okay."

"You might actually become important later."

That was, by Alicia's standards, extremely high praise.

The boy suddenly lifted his head and looked around.

Alicia went still.

For half a second, she wondered if he had somehow sensed her.

But no—

not exactly.

He could not detect her directly.

Still, something about the region seemed to make him more aware than the others.

More receptive.

More spiritually sensitive.

And that made Alicia pay even closer attention.

Then something interesting happened.

A nearby child, much younger than the others, stumbled while running near the river.

Alicia expected the child to fall.

Instead, the boy from earlier reacted almost instantly, grabbing the child and pulling him back before he slipped into the water.

His movement was quick.

Smooth.

Too smooth for someone at this stage.

Alicia paused.

Then slowly thought:

"…Yeah. That's definitely not normal anymore."

The increase was still minor.

Very minor.

But it was undeniably there.

The first signs of true change had begun.

And because Alicia had been mentally waiting for this exact kind of development—

she became deeply focused.

She opened her interface.

A small system panel appeared.

[Race Observation Notice]

Human Race — Early Spiritual Compatibility Detected

Current Status:

basic environmental adaptation achieved

low-level Soul Power sensitivity emerging

instinctive energy preference beginning to form

Evaluation:

The human race has entered the earliest stage of spiritual development.

Alicia stared at the screen.

Then read the final line again.

The earliest stage of spiritual development.

Alicia remained quiet for a moment.

Then slowly smiled.

Not because humans had suddenly become powerful.

Because they had not.

Not even close.

But because this meant something much bigger.

It meant the world had crossed another threshold.

The humans were no longer just surviving.

They were beginning to change.

And once change began—

evolution would follow.

Civilization would follow.

Paths would follow.

That was huge.

Far bigger than one stronger hunter or one sharper child.

This was the beginning of a future.

Alicia observed the river plains in silence for a while after that.

The humans still looked simple.

Still primitive.

Still fragile.

But now, for the first time—

they no longer looked ordinary.

They looked like the first sparks of something greater.

And Alicia liked that very much.

Then, naturally—

she immediately began thinking ahead.

If the humans were changing already, then eventually she would need to consider things like:

settlement patterns

resource access

regional advantages

spiritual exposure

and future race divergence

Alicia paused.

Then thought:

"…Wow."

"I'm basically managing early civilization now."

That was… weirdly satisfying.

And slightly terrifying.

Mostly satisfying.

She watched the young boy one last time as he stood near the river, staring quietly at the flowing water once again.

The sunlight reflected off the surface.

The breeze moved across the plains.

And for one small moment—

the boy reached out toward the water as if trying to grasp something invisible within it.

Alicia's awareness sharpened instantly.

Because for the briefest moment—

a faint thread of Soul Power moved toward his hand.

Then disappeared.

The boy blinked in confusion.

Alicia froze.

Then immediately focused harder.

But the moment was gone.

Still—

she had seen it.

Clear as day.

A direct response.

Tiny.

Unstable.

But real.

Alicia went completely silent.

Because if that was what she thought it was—

then humans on her world had just taken their very first step toward true cultivation.

And that changed everything.
