Chapter 30 - In the woods

Nathan took a beer from the cooler and sat on a log. He watched people dance and make out.

Jenny walked over to him and sat by him.

"What is this? Some kind of high school party?"

Nathan asked her and she placed her head on his shoulder. He looked around for Mark then caught a glimpse of Bill staring at him.

"I think Bill likes you," he said to her.

"Yeah, that ship has sunk. We dated a while back. It did not work," Jenny explained.

"Oh, that makes sense. I see the way he looks at you. He still has feelings for you," Nathan said, and Jenny suddenly got up and walked away.

He watched her leave, then Bill went after her. Nathan heard shots being fired and went in that direction.

It was the same guy who took the gun from Christine. He and some friends were shooting beer cans.

He pulled the trigger and the can clicked.

"You are out of bullets," Nathan said leaning against a tree.

"Who asked you?" the young man said and pointed the gun at Nathan. Before he could say another word, he felt the cold barrel of a gun behind his head.

Mark took Nathan's gun from him and handed it back to Nathan.

"You didn't have to do that the gun was empty," Nathan explained to Mark. The young man was visibly angry. Veins at the side of his head popped out as he stared at them.

They suddenly heard a scream and they all ran to find out what had happened. When they got there a crowd had surrounded a tree.

Nathan squeezed through the crowd and saw a girl in similar clothes to Jenny on the floor by the tree. The sight made his heart sink. His throat dried instantly and he struggled to swallow.

He then saw Jenny in the crowd. He pushed people out of his way as he went to her. He hugged her tightly.

"I thought…, I'm glad you are okay," Nathan said to her.

"Yeah I am fine but Grace..," Jenny said.

"You knew her?" Nathan asked just before Mark walked over to him.

He pulled him aside.

"We have a problem," Mark said and looked around.

"Yeah, I know. Someone was just killed, probably by a bear," Nathan said.

"Not a bear, something more intelligent," Mark said.

"You think this is some kind of monster?" Nathan asked.

"Yeah, it is getting dark and we need to get everyone out of here," Mark turned around and saw Jenny.

"This is supposed to be a camping trip. I don't think anyone will be going anywhere," Jenny said to Mark.

"Hey everyone, calm down. I will call a camp ranger and they will take over from there, a young blonde masculine guy jumped on a table and said.

"Who is that?" Nathan asked.

"That's Greg, one of the organizers," Jenny said. They watched as Greg moved his phone around looking for a signal.

"Does anyone have a signal?" Greg asked the crowd but there was no reply. Greg got down from the table and walked away.

Martin walked over to Greg minutes later.

"What are you not telling us?" Martin asked.

"Nothing, just calm down," Greg said but it was too late. Martin's commotion drew the crowd's attention.

Soon they all demanded to know what was going on.

"Fine, I was going to drive to the rangers' office but my car would not start," Greg explained.

"I can help with that," Mark said, and stepped forward.

Greg led, Mark, Nathan, and Jenny to his car.

Mark opened the hood and noticed some wires and tubes had been cut.

"Some wires and tubes have eroded. They will have to be replaced," Mark said to Greg.

"We can take Martin's car," Jenny said, and went to look for Martin.

"Those wires and tubes were cut on purpose," Mark pulled Nathan aside and said.

"So whatever killed the girl does not want us to leave," Nathan said.
