Chapter 35 - Dead Women Tell No Tales

When they got to where the cars were parked. They started to break into them one after the other.

In one of the cars, they let the seats down and lay Mark and the injured man inside.

"Hey, will this work?" Jenny screamed at Nathan. He walked over to see her with a blowtorch. Martin arrived later.

"Wow, a blow torch. Good for us but why came to a party with a blow torch?" Nathan asked.

"Maybe to start a campfire," Jenny explained.

"That tracks, that's James' car," Martin explained.

"That did not explain anything," Nathan said as Martin walked away.

Meanwhile, the Wendigo barged into the cabin in the woods. It saw the charred body of its companion and roared.

It walked over and touched it. It immediately fell like sand in an hourglass. The wendigo knelt in front of a heap of black sand.

It caught a smell and looked down to see a small pool of blood. It sniffed and followed the blood trail out of the cabin.

Back at the car park, Nathan called out to Martin.

"If we don't return by sunrise, walk by the road. Hitch a ride out of here," Nathan said to Jenny.

"I will be waiting for you, just get back safe. Don't jump in front of bullets for anyone," Jenny advised.

Nathan turned to see Martin dragging his feet as he walked towards them. Nathan took the lead and Martin followed close by.

As they got deeper into the woods. Nathan started to tiptoe.

"This is where I saw it the last time," Nathan whispered to Martin holding the flame thrower tightly.

Martin rattled as his teeth knocked against each other.

"There is no trace of the Wendigo. Let's search for Monica," Nathan suggested.

They slowly moved through the woods looking for Monica.

"Did you see Christine?" Nathan asked as they searched deeper into the woods.

Martin saw a shoe, he walked in that direction and stumbled onto a heap of leaves. He got closer and noticed a pair of legs sticking out.

"I think I found..," Martin was saying when a moan in the leaves interrupted him.

"Did you say something?" Nathan yelled back at him.

Martin dug through the leaves. Underneath was Monica, she was badly hurt but was still breathing. He stared at her and tears formed in his eyes.

"Eeerm, thought I saw something. It was just a hare," Martin said then checked on Nathan who then continued searching.

She was too weak to move or speak. Immediately she saw Martin she moaned and whimpered louder.

"I'm sorry," Martin said and covered her mouth and nose with both hands.

"I can't have you telling everyone I locked you out of the car," Martin said as Monica's body twitched, kicking around leaves.

All the while Nathan searched. Suddenly there was a huge bang. Nathan turned around and noticed it was coming from the car park.

"Martin keep looking I have to go," Nathan said and ran in the direction of the loud bang.

"Sure," Martin replied and knelt on Monica's hands. After a while, she stopped moving.

Martin got up and wiped the tears off his face. He covered her back with some leaves and gestured the sign of the cross before leaving.

"It was an act of mercy, she was suffering," Martin said as he tried to convince himself.
