When Nathan and Mark got back the party had died down. Most people just sat and drank as they talked. They saw Greg and a couple of people heading into the woods.
"Greg, I thought you were going to take Martin's car," Mark asked when they saw him.
"Yeah, Martin's car would not start either," Greg replied.
"None of the cars will," an overweight-looking young man added.
"So are you guys walking to the Rangers' camp?" Nathan asked.
"No, it's dark now. We will make the trip in the morning," Greg replied.
Mark and Nathan agreed and went to look for the group they came with. When they found them they had already set up their tents.
"Where were you guys," Monica asked.
"We were trying to fix Greg's car," Mark said.
"Can you help me gather some cans? I want to set a trap in case whatever killed Grace returns," Nathan suggested.
"Sure," Jenny said, and got up to help.
The others joined and they went round the campsite picking cans.
"Does anyone have a rope?" Mark asked.
"All I have is a fishing line," Bill said.
"Yeah, that will work," Mark said, then accompanied Bill to the car to get it. When they got back, they made a chain of cans.
Others saw this and did the same. They tied them around the trees creating a barrier around the camp.
This bonding act ignited the party again. It was a toned-down version of the earlier one. Somber music played in the background as people talked and made out.
"Come sit with me," Jenny called to Nathan. He was checking for breaks in the can barrier that the others made.
"Why do you always do that?" Jenny asked.
"Do what?" Nathan said as he tugged on the cords.
"Pull away, I have seen the way you look at me," Jenny said.
"Not to sound offensive but you don't know me," Nathan said.
"That's why I want to," Jenny replied.
Nathan walked to her and sat by her side.
"You may regret your decision once you get to know me," Nathan cautioned her.
"Give me a chance to make my own decision," Jenny argued.
"Okay, what do you want to know?" Nathan asked.
"First what were you doing at the side of the road in the scorching sun?"
"Honestly, I don't know. We were supposed to be in North Dakota…," Nathan was saying when a sharp pain shot right through his head.
He groaned and grabbed his head.
"Are you okay," Jenny asked and placed a hand on his back.
"Yeah, I am fine. Just a slight headache," Nathan tried to recall what happened after he got to Dakota, but nothing came to mind.
"It's if you don't remember. Just tell me what you are willing to share," Jenny said.
"I graduated from Northside about six months ago," Nathan said.
"No way, we graduated from Crystal half a year ago too," Jenny blurted out.
"Oh really, so which colleges did you get into?" Nathan asked.
"Brown, Yale, and Princeton but I am leaning towards Yale," Jenny said.
"My dad was a Harvard alumnus, so there was only one choice for me," Nathan smiled.
"Was?" Jenny asked.
"Yes, he passed away a few months ago," Nathan said as he tried to keep his smile.
"Sorry,"
"It's fine," Nathan said then heard the cans knock against each other.
"It's probably the wind," Jenny said.
Nathan strained his eyes as he stared in the direction of the clashing cans. After not seeing anything he turns his attention back to Jenny.
"Harvard, you don't look like a Harvard. You look like a Yale to me," Jenny said and and Nathan chuckled.
Suddenly, a scream pierced through the somber music in the background.
Nathan turned to see an emaciated creature with glowing yellow eyes walk into the camp.
