Chapter 19
(The Shadow of Reality Hidden Beneath Dreams)
Aishi couldn't sleep that night. She sat by the window for a long time, staring at the silent sky outside. The moonlight fell softly across the room, casting shadows over the sleeping girls, but in Aishi's eyes, there was only Ayush's face. His words, his perspective, and that quiet yet brave look in his eyes kept returning to her mind again and again. It felt like Ayush was no longer just a boy—he had become a shelter, a reassurance, a strength hidden beneath an unfinished dream. Aishi kept placing her hand over her heart, as if trying to engrave his words deep inside her.
As dawn broke, she got up. The dewdrops clinging to the window glass seemed like questions floating in her eyes. "Can we really do this?" "Will even a little light find its way through this society, these barriers, these walls?"—thinking all this, Aishi got ready for college.
It was raining in the morning as she left. Not heavily, but enough to soak her gently. Aishi had deliberately not brought an umbrella. Today, walking through the rain felt right. In every drop, she searched for Ayush's words. It felt like the rain was washing away her old fears. As she walked along the muddy path, she felt like she was finally facing the real world—where fear, hesitation, and barriers come together to shape the true form of love.
When she reached college, she didn't find Ayush at the gate. A little restless, she looked around. Then she saw him standing at a distance, his eyes carrying a mix of concern and quiet resentment. Aishi smiled softly and walked toward him.
"What happened?" she asked.
Ayush replied, "Why did you come in the rain like this? You'll fall sick."
Aishi smiled, "You're there, right? You'll take care of me if I do."
A faint smile appeared on Ayush's face. Looking down, he said, "It's this carefree smile of yours that scares me the most. The way you believe I can handle everything—it feels like a mountain of responsibility on my shoulders. But I'm scared, Aishi. I really am."
Aishi didn't say anything. She simply placed her hand over his. Her eyes held a calm, steady assurance—as if saying, I want to share your fears. That touch lightened Ayush's heart. He realized that no matter what happened, Aishi would stand by him.
"Let's go to the riverside again after college today. I want to tell you something," Ayush said softly.
That day, time seemed frozen during classes. Every hour felt endless. Nothing could hold their attention. All they could think about was when the day would end. After classes, they went to that quiet riverside. A gentle breeze flowed along the river, and the white reeds swayed in the distance. Everything felt just like the first day—calm and deep. A familiar feeling filled Aishi's heart—as if this place held a spiritual bond between them.
Ayush said, "Aishi, I've been thinking about something for a long time. If we ever tell our families about us, what do you think will happen?"
Aishi looked at him deeply and said, "My mother… she might never forgive me. I know her beliefs, her faith, her self-respect—everything is tied to this. And your family?"
Ayush gave a faint, bittersweet smile. "My family has many dreams for me. They want me to uphold our religious pride. They will never accept that I love a Hindu girl."
"So… what will we do?" Aishi asked.
"I don't know," Ayush replied. "But I do know this—I don't want to lose you. I dream of a future with you. Maybe that dream isn't real, maybe it's impossible—but I still want to see it. What about you?"
"I want to see it too," Aishi said. "Together. Slowly. We have to give time a chance to understand us, to give us courage. Our love shouldn't rush into decisions. We both know we are incomplete without each other. And to make that incompleteness whole, we'll have to endure a lot of pain."
Ayush stayed silent for a moment. Then he took out a small piece of paper from his pocket. It had a drawing—Aishi and Ayush holding hands, with a sunset behind them.
"You know, I drew this last night," he said. "This isn't us—this is our dream. If someday we go somewhere together, keep this image in your heart."
Aishi held the drawing for a long time, silently. Tears filled her eyes. Then she said softly, "We will stay together, Ayush. Against time, society, religion—everything. Just stay by my side. I will never step back."
They talked for a long time after that—about the past, the future, little dreams of life. Ayush said he wanted to build a small house one day, where it would be just the two of them, along with some books and dreams. Aishi said she wanted to open a school for young girls who are forced to give up their dreams because of society. Ayush said they would name their children in a way that no one could guess their religion—so they could grow up simply as human beings.
While saying all this, the world didn't feel frightening. It felt like a new world was being created—by people like them, who know how to love despite all barriers. Resting her head on Ayush's shoulder, Aishi said, "If you ever get lost, I will find you. Even if you forget your own religion, I will recognize you in the name of love."
That night, after returning home, Aishi placed the drawing inside her diary and wrote—
"Today, standing by the river, we promised to stay together. Even if the shadows around us grow darker, a light will keep burning within us. I know our dream will one day face harsh reality. But as long as Ayush is there, I will never lose."
