Chapter 22 - Unnamed

Chapter: 22

(The pain buried beneath unspoken words)

The next morning feels even heavier. The sky is overcast, and there's a strange restlessness in the air. Since morning, everything seems tense and still. Ayush knows he will see Aishi again today, but he can't decide how to speak or what to say. As he steps out of his house, he walks aimlessly down the road, as if his feet don't even know where to go. Her face keeps circling in his mind—that silent gaze, that bitter smile from the other day. A deep pain begins to settle inside him, yet even he doesn't know where to find relief from it.

Aishi, meanwhile, stands in front of the mirror in her room, combing her hair. The moment her eyes meet her own reflection, she feels uneasy. Her eyes had never looked this sad before. Once, she carried a colorful world within her; now it's only fog and emptiness. Her face feels unfamiliar, even to herself. Her smile seems to have disappeared somewhere. She gets dressed, picks up her bag, and steps out as if nothing has happened—but inside, an invisible storm keeps spinning, pulling her deeper into herself.

Today, they meet again at the bus stand. Both of them know—they will likely arrive at the same time, stand in the same place, and their eyes will meet again. But neither of them has any words prepared. Ayush stands at the same spot where he first saw Aishi. He glances around once. A little distance away, Aishi stands, her face turned away—but she knows Ayush is looking at her. Even if they hide their gaze, feelings cannot be hidden. It feels as though, in the middle of the city's noise, a delicate, silent thread of emotion is stretched tightly between them—ready to snap at any moment.

The bus arrives. It's crowded. They both push their way in, pretending not to notice each other. Yet their eyes meet, their shoulders brush. Gathering a little courage, Ayush softly says, "Aishi…"

Aishi steps slightly aside. "Yes?"—there's a tiredness in her voice.

"I… I mean… if I'm sorry for something, will you listen?"

Aishi turns her face toward the window. "Do you even know what you're sorry for?"

Ayush falls silent. He truly doesn't know. He doesn't understand what his exact mistake was—maybe his silence, maybe his harsh words, maybe everything combined. But in that moment, Aishi's eyes hold a kind of hurt and humiliation that Ayush cannot explain.

"I just wanted… for us to move forward slowly," Ayush says, his voice carrying a suffocating plea.

"I never asked you to stop," Aishi replies, her tone touched with a cold trace of hurt.

After these few words, they fall silent again. Even standing so close, it feels as if they are miles apart. Between them stands a wall—cold, solid—not made of words, but of feelings.

The bus keeps moving. The scenes outside keep changing, but the emotions inside them grow heavier and heavier. There are some feelings that can never be spoken. They remain in the eyes like unshed tears—never falling, yet weighing down the heart constantly.

They reach college. But their minds are still stuck inside that bus, trapped in incomplete conversations. Ayush walks straight to the library. He doesn't feel like attending classes. He knows if he faces Aishi again today, he won't be able to say anything. He will only try to express through his eyes—that he still loves her the same way, still fears losing her.

Sitting in a corner of the library, Ayush opens his diary and writes—

"When your gaze moves away from me, I feel like I'm breaking apart. I don't know how to fix everything. If only you said once—'Let's fix our mistakes this time.' I could fight for us. But now I'm just burning inside… silently."

Aishi attends class, but her mind isn't there. Not a single word the teacher says reaches her. Holding a pencil, she scribbles softly in the corner of her notebook—

"Words have limits. Some pain can be understood without them. Can you read that pain, Ayush?"

The day passes in silence. By evening, classes end. While everyone leaves, Ayush remains seated alone in the library. It's quiet all around. Outside the window, a gentle breeze blows. The rustling leaves make a sound, while inside his head, Aishi's voice echoes—

"Do you even know what you're sorry for?"

Back home, Aishi sits by the window. The wind brushes through her hair. Her heart feels unbearably heavy, yet she cannot express it to anyone. A message from Ayush appears on her phone—"Take care." Just two words. Yet their weight feels like a mountain pressing down on her chest.

She stares at the phone for a long time. She types, deletes, types again—but says nothing. Finally, she puts the phone aside. Slowly, her eyes close. It feels as if a door inside her heart is opening—where perhaps Ayush stands, reaching out his hand. But in reality, there is only darkness.

A tear rolls down the corner of her eye. She doesn't know—does this "take care" mean a final goodbye? Or is it just a small test of how strong their bond really is? The burden of unspoken words slowly suffocates their relationship. Yet neither of them says anything. These unsaid feelings only build a greater wall of distance between them.
