Chapter – 23
(Questions that gather quietly in the footsteps of time…!)
The next morning, even before Ayush leaves for college, the sky breaks into rain. Heavy, cold, endless rain—as if the sky itself is pouring out suppressed tears and unspoken words. Ayush rests his forehead against the window glass. Staring outside, he keeps thinking—if he meets Aishi today, what will he say? Yet the words piled up inside his chest are so tangled that they refuse to form sentences. Only one question keeps circling in his mind—will everything be alright?
Aishi, too, steps out of her house today with a different feeling. It feels like this day might change something… or push them further into another misunderstanding. She doesn't know. All she knows is that a quiet exhaustion is building inside her. Small hurts and intense silences have created a pale emptiness in her heart. She walks out silently, carrying a mix of hesitation and unspoken fear within her.
They both arrive at the bus stand. Ayush is already there, his face carrying that familiar seriousness. No one would guess the storm raging inside him. Aishi stands a little distance away, clutching the strap of her bag tightly. Their eyes meet. No words are spoken, yet that glance holds countless unsaid emotions—affection, hurt, and perhaps a silent complaint.
The bus arrives. People rush and push to get in. Aishi and Ayush stand side by side. With the gentle jerks of the bus, they occasionally brush against each other. Aishi steps back slightly, while Ayush remains silent. But the invisible distance between them feels more painful than words.
Suddenly, the bus halts with a jolt. Ayush stumbles slightly toward Aishi. For a brief moment, they touch. Ayush quickly steps back.
"Sorry…" His voice trembles.
Aishi turns her face toward the window. Silence. Ayush remains silent too. This quietness only deepens the discomfort between them.
The bus keeps moving. Outside, the city gets drenched in rain. Inside, words fall unspoken in their hearts. Ayush knows he should break this silence, say something—but courage fails him.
After reaching college, they walk in different directions. Yet their minds keep returning to the same feeling. Ayush goes straight to the library. He knows he won't be able to study or write today. Still, he opens his small diary and writes on a page—
"If only you had said once, 'You're my friend, Ayush,' maybe I would have been different today. The way your silence breaks me… I can never explain that to you."
On the other hand, Aishi enters her class, but her mind refuses to settle. On the open page of her notebook, she keeps writing just one name—Ayush. Then she crosses it out. As if trying to convince herself that this name will never have a place in her life. Yet her hand doesn't stop. No matter how many times she cuts it off, she writes it again. Her heart refuses to listen to logic.
After classes, they meet again near the college gate. This time, no one speaks, yet they begin walking side by side, slowly. As if both of them know—today, somehow, they have to talk. It can't go on like this anymore.
"Do you write a diary?" Aishi suddenly asks.
Ayush pauses. "Yeah… I mean, sometimes… why?"
"I saw a notebook in your hand that day," Aishi replies, turning her face away.
"Hm… I write sometimes. The things that can't be said… can be written." A hint of pain reflects in Ayush's voice.
Aishi says nothing more. But in her mind she wonders—if only I could peek into that notebook someday, maybe I would understand how much you burn inside… for me.
At the bus stand, they stand side by side again. This time, Aishi speaks first—
"Ayush, can I ask you something?"
"Go ahead," he says, though fear stirs inside him.
"Do you actually like me?"
The question pierces Ayush unexpectedly. He looks straight into her eyes.
"Not just like… maybe something more than that."
Aishi stays silent for a moment. She lowers her gaze. Then softly asks—
"Then why have you stayed so distant all this time?"
At this, a suppressed ache fills Ayush's chest. He wants to say—fear, lack of confidence, maybe the fear of losing you… but he can't. Only one line escapes his lips—
"I'm afraid."
Aishi looks at him. There's a shimmer of tears in Ayush's eyes. A bus stops in front of them. People get on and off. But for them, time seems to stand still. It feels like they are trapped in an invisible world—just the two of them, and countless unspoken emotions.
That day, they sit side by side in the bus. Outside, the rain continues to fall. And for the first time, their hearts begin to move a little closer—crossing the walls of fear, hurt, and unspoken love. Yet their conversation remains incomplete. Perhaps, slowly, one day, it will find its completion.
