Chapter 26 - Unnamed

Chapter 26

(Afternoons Touched by Shadows)

The next few days passed as if under a strange spell. Every morning, Ayush and Aishi would arrive at the bus stop a little early—just to make sure they didn't miss seeing each other. Boarding the bus, standing together, sometimes sitting side by side if they found seats—it all became routine, yet felt new every single day.

Now, they could look into each other's eyes and talk for long moments. And yet, neither of them spoke those four words—"I love you." The words seemed to reach their lips but melted away into the language of their eyes.

Aishi had started reading Ayush's diary. In every page, she found reflections of her own hidden emotions. Ayush, too, carefully folded Aishi's handwritten letters and kept them close to his heart. They hadn't confessed their love in words, but their actions, their perspectives, their silent exchanges—everything revealed how deeply they were rooted within each other.

Their friends had started noticing. One day after class, Shreyasi, Aishi's close friend, asked directly,

"So what exactly are you and Ayush? Just friends… or something more?"

Aishi smiled, then lowered her eyes and said softly,

"You can call it friendship… but the kind of friendship I'm afraid to lose."

Shreyasi paused and replied,

"Then talk about it. Otherwise, one day that fear might come true."

Aishi didn't respond. She just looked at herself in the mirror. In her eyes, there was only one question—would she ever find the courage?

One day after college, the sky suddenly turned cloudy. A light rain began to fall. Everyone ran for shelter—into classrooms or under the cafeteria roof—but Ayush and Aishi stayed back, sitting on a concrete bench, letting themselves get drenched.

Ayush wore a light blue shirt, now soaked and clinging to him. Aishi's dupatta stuck to her as well. But there was no discomfort, no fear in their eyes—only a strange calmness spread around them.

Aishi asked softly,

"Do you like the rain, Ayush?"

Ayush replied,

"I didn't before. But now, being with you… I'm forced to love it."

Aishi laughed—a laughter that seemed to push away the mist in the air. Then she said,

"I never thought you'd enter my life like this. You know, when I don't see you, everything feels so empty."

Ayush stepped a little closer and said,

"How do you say everything so easily? I just stay quiet… I'm afraid."

Aishi looked into his eyes and said,

"You're afraid only because you love deeply, Ayush. You don't want to lose it. You don't fully understand how deep this feeling is yet. But if you love even through fear… then that's real love."

Their hair was wet, clothes clinging to their bodies, but they kept looking at each other. Around them, some friends watched from windows, whispering, even laughing—but none of it mattered. They had entered each other's worlds so deeply that no outside noise could cast a shadow anymore.

That night, Ayush wrote in his diary—

"When you are beside me, time doesn't stop… instead, time holds me still within your eyes. Every day, I become someone new just by seeing you. And that person exists only for you. If you ask, I could erase myself—just to stay beside you."

Aishi, too, wrote in her notebook—

"You make me think about you constantly. Every word, every gesture, even your silence—everything stays within me. I don't know where it begins or ends, but I know this… you have entered a place inside me where no one else ever could."

The next day, on the way to college, Ayush brought a small tiffin box. He handed it to Aishi without saying a word. Curious, she opened it—and found homemade parathas and egg curry inside. A small note read:

"Today's lunch, made with care—just for you."

Aishi looked surprised.

"You cooked this?"

Ayush shook his head,

"No, my mother did. I just secretly brought it for you. I didn't mention you… just said it was for 'a friend.'"

Aishi fell silent, then said softly,

"If only you could tell your mother about me someday…"

Ayush paused and replied,

"I will… someday. I'm just afraid—what if everything changes once I say your name?"

Aishi lowered her head and said,

"Then maybe someday, I'll question everything—my religion, my family—just for you."

There was no answer to that. Only silence spread between them—like a shadow descending from the distant sky. But even within that shadow, the color of their love didn't fade… it only grew deeper.

That evening, Aishi opened her favorite notebook and wrote on the last page—

"Today you didn't say you love me… but the way you looked at me in silence—that is the deepest confession of love to me."

And Ayush wrote in the last line of his diary—

"Love cannot be spoken. It can only be felt. You are all my words, all my silence. When you are beside me, I find myself."
