Chapter: 28
(The Hidden Confession Within)
A strange restlessness has been building inside Aishi these days. Even while spending the entire day at college, her eyes search for only one face—Ayush's. Whether she's entering a classroom, walking through the corridor, or passing by the library, her gaze keeps scanning the familiar crowd for that one pair of reassuring eyes.
One day, Shreyasi teases her lightly,
"You're completely lost in Ayush these days. If you don't see him, your whole day feels incomplete, doesn't it?"
Aishi lowers her head and smiles. But beneath that smile lies a different emotion—a tug-of-war between fear and love. She knows this conflict isn't hers alone. Like many girls in this society, her heart is filled with countless questions—questions that neither society nor family may ever answer.
One day, while sitting on a bench beside the library, Aishi suddenly says to Ayush,
"You know, I can manage not seeing you for a day. But even if I try, I can't forget you. I don't want to forget you, Ayush. You've entered a place in my heart that I can't deny."
Ayush remains silent. He knows her words are simple, yet deeply profound. He replies,
"You know, I never had anyone before. But after finding you, I realized something—there's a difference between having no one and being afraid of losing someone. It's the fear of losing you that pulls me closer to you every day."
Aishi then asks,
"Will we be able to do this, Ayush? I mean, with society, family, all these rules… will we really be able to stay together?"
Ayush knows the answer isn't simple. He just says,
"If you stay, I can."
That day after class, they quietly walk toward the field behind the college. The sun is about to set. A golden-red light spreads all around. Birds are calling, and a gentle breeze flows. Aishi suddenly stops. Ayush looks at her and asks,
"What happened?"
Aishi says,
"You know, this place is very special to me. When I was little, I used to imagine that one day I would sit here with someone and talk. Do you know who that person was in my imagination?"
Ayush smiles softly and says,
"No. But whoever it is, I want to become that person."
Aishi replies,
"It was you, Ayush. Maybe I didn't know your name or recognize your face. But the way you are in my life today—it feels like I've been searching for you for a long time."
Amidst these conversations, they somehow find themselves sitting on a bench. Ayush slowly moves closer to her—not for touch, but for understanding, for realization. He asks,
"Are you afraid of me?"
With a trembling voice, Aishi replies,
"I'm not afraid of you. I'm afraid of losing you. I know you're Muslim, and I'm Hindu. I know my family will never accept you. I know you won't give up your beliefs, and neither will I. Still, I want you to stay. Just stay."
Ayush says,
"You know, Aishi, when I pray now, I see you. When I bow in prayer, I see you in front of me. At that moment, religion doesn't exist—only love remains."
Tears fill Aishi's eyes. She says,
"That's exactly what people don't understand, Ayush. We love each other as human beings. But everyone else sees our religion, our names, our skin color, our customs, our clothes—everything except our hearts."
They both fall silent. The evening light slowly fades into darkness. Sitting side by side on the bench, with a few dry leaves scattered nearby, the gentle wind seems to listen to their unspoken words.
Ayush takes out a small blue envelope from his pocket and hands it to Aishi. Surprised, she opens it. Inside is a small letter—
"If you can, stay beside this little dream of mine. Maybe we won't end up together, but you will remain the only resident of my heart."
Aishi reads it, then looks up at Ayush. Tears fill both their eyes—not just of sorrow, but of love, strength, and a silent promise—that no matter what happens, they will always remain in each other's hearts.
