Chapter 24 - Unnamed

Chapter: 24

(The Unspoken Language of Feelings)

The next morning feels comparatively calm. The sun peeks out slightly, spreading a soft warmth across the windowpane. But that light fails to reach Ayush's heart. The pages of his diary remain blank, yet his fingers keep moving—as if words are about to land at any moment. The silence of the room, broken only by his breath and the crease on his forehead, reveals one thing—today, he will speak. He has to. He can't hold it in any longer.

In Aishi's room too, light plays softly. Her mother is asleep, her father has gone to work. Sitting alone, she slings her bag over her shoulder and stands in front of the mirror. A light touch of lipstick today, a hint of kajal in her eyes. Looking at herself, she feels a flicker of confidence for the first time. Then she whispers softly to her reflection,

"Today… what if something feels different?"

At the bus stop, they both arrive—separately. Yet, this distance seems to be creating something new between them. Ayush is already there, shifting his weight from one foot to another. He glances at Aishi, then quickly looks away. The words inside him rise to his lips again and again, only to stop midway.

But today, Aishi keeps looking at him quietly—as if she might finally ask a hidden question.

She isn't standing like before, with restlessness or guarded shoulders. There's a calmness in her eyes today. It feels like she is ready—to hear something, or to say something.

The bus takes time to arrive, and that wait stretches like a silent test for both of them. Finally, it comes. They get on. Like always, no seats are available. They have to stand—but this time, side by side. Very close. Their clothes brush lightly. Even their breathing becomes noticeable.

Ayush slowly says,

"I thought… maybe you were upset with me. But now it feels like… you think about me too, don't you?"

Aishi looks at him once and replies,

"If someday you let me read your diary…"

Ayush is slightly startled, then says,

"If you read it, you'll see how many stories have begun with your name… and none of them have an ending."

A soft smile appears in Aishi's eyes. She says,

"You don't even know… I write your name in my notebook… then cross it out… then write it again… and erase it again."

And just like that, begins a series of small confessions—the ones they had been silently burning inside for so long. They are not in love yet, but for the first time, they willingly take a step toward it. It isn't like touch, nor exactly like words—it's a feeling that only those understand who have lived through it.

At college, they walk side by side. Then they stand outside the classroom for a while, without speaking. Time seems to pause. The noise around them—footsteps, chatter, everything—fades away beyond the quiet world they've created together.

Aishi says,

"You know, Ayush… today I feel lighter. All this time, I thought you didn't understand me. But I never really let you show how much you feel."

Ayush lowers his voice and says,

"I'm afraid of losing you, Aishi. Because you're different. You're something I can't even explain to myself."

Aishi's eyes grow moist, but she stays silent. She just walks beside him—as if with every step, the distance between them is fading.

That day, sitting in the college library, Ayush writes for Aishi—

"If you become every feeling inside me, then I won't recognize anyone else—only you. I won't need the noise of this world, because I'll learn to read everything in your eyes."

Aishi writes in her notebook—

"If today you suddenly say, 'You are mine,' I won't ask for anything more. Because you are the one I have quietly fallen in love with—without reason, without even realizing it."

In the evening, they sit side by side on the bus ride back. The last rays of the setting sun fall on their faces through the window. They remain silent. But this silence has now become a new language—one without grammar or rules, only heartbeats, quiet murmurs, and the presence of each other.

Looking out the window, Ayush says,

"You know, Aishi… I never understood what love really feels like. What I saw in movies or stories never felt real. But after meeting you… it feels like these emotions aren't imagination. They are real. As real as thorns."

Aishi turns to look at him. Without saying anything, she gently touches his hand for a brief moment… and then withdraws it. But in that one moment, Ayush finds all his answers—his fears, doubts, and pain seem to dissolve in that silent touch.

That night, both lie awake in their own beds, sleep far from their eyes. They keep writing in their diaries—as if all their words will remain safe within those pages, until the day they finally gather the courage to say everything out loud.
