Chapter 18

(A confession lingering in the air)

From the very morning, there was a strange excitement in the college. Even though there was no special event, something seemed to be suspended in the air. A cloudy sky, a gentle cool breeze, and a quiet anticipation on the faces of the students—on days like this, everything feels a little closer, a little more tangible.

As Aishi stepped out of the hostel, she paused at the balcony, adjusting her hair and repeatedly glancing at her watch. Her mind was restless today. She had a feeling that Ayush would say something—something important. She couldn't quite explain it, but it felt like something was about to happen. Today, more than her books, her heart longed to lose itself in Ayush's eyes.

As she entered through the college gate, she noticed Ayush wasn't standing in his usual spot. Slightly surprised, she looked around. On one side, near the peon's table, there was a small paper envelope. Her name—Aishi—was written on it.

She quickly picked it up. Inside, it read—

"Today feels a little different, so I'm calling you to a different place. Come to the rooftop, the back side of the fifth floor. No one goes there. I'll be waiting."

Her heart skipped a beat. The envelope sent an unfamiliar tremor through her chest. Slowly, she began climbing the stairs. It felt as if her feet weren't touching the ground—she was floating. Her mind was full of questions, yet none of them seemed urgent. All she needed was to see him—Ayush.

As she stepped onto the rooftop, a cool gust of wind brushed past her. In the distance, the noise of the city blended with the chirping of birds. In one corner stood Ayush—white shirt, open hair, and that same deep gaze. The shadow from a nearby structure fell across him, turning the moment into something almost theatrical.

"You know," Ayush said, "I came here to say many things today. But every word disappears the moment I look into your eyes."

Aishi slowly walked closer. "Are you afraid?"

"I'd be lying if I said I'm not. Because I know what I want may not be easy for you. Our families, our religions, society—everything stands against us. But still, I'll say it."

Ayush took a step forward. There was a certainty, a strength in his eyes that Aishi had never seen before. She lifted her face, and he said—

"Aishi, I love you. I love you in a way where there is no religion, no identity—only you. I'm not asking for a decision right now. I just want you to know that every step you take, every smile, every moment of hurt—you've all become mine. If you want, I'll wait. For a long time… even a lifetime."

Aishi remained silent. The wind played with her hair, and her eyes filled with tears. Something deep inside her trembled. This boy—who could speak with such courage—didn't just love, he protected.

"I know," she finally said, "what you've spoken, my heart had already heard long ago. But I didn't have the courage to say it. Ayush, I was never afraid of you—I was afraid of society. But today, I'll say it—I love you too. In the same way. Beyond names, beyond identities—just us."

Ayush didn't speak. He lowered his gaze slightly and said softly, "Do you know, your 'I love you' feels like a prayer to me? I don't want anything more today, Aishi. I just want you to stay beside me—no matter what comes against us."

They stood silently for a while, facing each other. No embrace, no kiss—yet in that moment, it felt as though they touched each other at the deepest level of their hearts. The wind stilled, the surroundings quieted—as if time itself paused to witness their confession.

Aishi said, "You know, Ayush, I'm not afraid anymore. Because I know we're together. Now, time just needs patience. Society needs to understand what we truly want."

Ayush nodded. "I will love you anew every day, as if one lifetime isn't enough."

That evening, Aishi wrote in her diary—

"Today, I told Ayush that I love him. It sounded so simple, but within those words were tears, fear, and dreams no one knows about. I know our path is difficult, but now I hold the hand of someone—if I let go, I won't recognize myself anymore."

Ayush wrote—

"Today, Aishi said she loves me. It's greater than every reward, every achievement in the world. Now my heart carries only one thought—how do I protect her? How do I shield her from society? My love has now become a promise."

The night grew deeper. Moonlight spread across the rooftop. Aishi sat by the window, Ayush's face appearing again and again in her thoughts. They don't know what the future holds, but today's confession—those words lingering in the air—will change their lives forever.
