Chapter 4 - Chapter 4:The First Target

Lila didn't blink.

Her gaze stayed fixed on the boy in the front row.

Same posture.

Same calm smile.

Same person.

The one who had stood there—watching—on the night she died.

Her fingers curled slightly against the edge of her desk.

Steady.

She had to stay steady.

Panicking would only make her sloppy.

And sloppy… got people killed.

Above his head, the number hovered faintly.

[Danger Level: 12]

Low.

Harmless.

Normal.

Lila's eyes narrowed.

"No…" she whispered under her breath.

That wasn't right.

Not even close.

In her previous life, she had ignored the signs. Trusted what she saw.

Believed what people showed her.

That mistake had cost her everything.

This time, she would question everything.

Even numbers.

A quiet hum filled the classroom as students talked among themselves. Chairs scraped, laughter echoed, pages flipped.

Ordinary.

Too ordinary.

But now—

Lila could see it.

Numbers.

Floating above every head.

[5]

[18]

[9]

[27]

Some were faint.

Some were steady.

Some flickered like unstable signals.

Her breathing slowed as she took it all in.

"This… is real."

Her gaze shifted.

Scanning.

Measuring.

Then—

She froze.

Back corner.

Near the window.

A girl with braided hair sat laughing with her friends, completely at ease.

Soft smile.

Gentle eyes.

The type no one would ever suspect.

But above her head—

The number burned.

[Danger Level: 89]

Lila's pupils shrank.

Eighty-nine?

Here?

In this classroom?

Her heart didn't race.

It dropped.

Heavy.

Cold.

"That's too high…" she murmured.

The girl looked normal.

Too normal.

That was the problem.

The number flickered.

89… 91… 88… 93…

It wasn't stable.

It was rising.

Lila leaned back slightly in her chair, forcing herself to stay composed.

Observe first.

Act later.

Her eyes drifted back to the front.

To him.

He was laughing now.

Quietly.

As if nothing in the world could touch him.

Above his head—

[Danger Level: 12]

Lila stared.

Longer this time.

Harder.

Something felt… off.

Then—

For just a split second—

The number changed.

[Danger Level: 100]

Lila froze.

Her breath caught.

Gone.

The number snapped back.

[Danger Level: 12]

Like nothing had happened.

Her grip tightened against the desk.

She hadn't imagined that.

She knew she hadn't.

"…So it's not just about what I see."

It was about what was being hidden.

A system.

A power.

Or something else entirely.

Lila slowly stood up.

The soft scrape of her chair against the floor drew a few glances, but she ignored them.

Her focus didn't waver.

Step.

Then another.

Each movement controlled.

Measured.

The distance between them shrank.

He noticed.

Of course he did.

Their eyes met.

For the first time—

His smile faltered.

"Lila?"

His voice was light.

Curious.

But there was something beneath it.

Something sharp.

"Is something wrong?"

Lila stopped in front of his desk.

Close enough now.

Too close to pretend this was casual.

The classroom noise dimmed in her ears.

Not silent.

But distant.

Like everything else had faded away.

She studied him.

Carefully.

Then she spoke.

Soft.

Direct.

"What's your name?"

A simple question.

One that should have been easy.

But the air shifted.

The boy tilted his head slightly, watching her like she was something interesting.

Something new.

"…Alex."

A pause.

"And you already knew that, didn't you?"

Lila didn't answer immediately.

Because last time—

She never asked.

And this time—

She wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

Her gaze flickered upward.

[Danger Level: 12]

Lies.

Her voice dropped.

Barely above a whisper.

"Because…"

She met his eyes again.

Unflinching.

"I think you're hiding something."

The words landed between them.

Heavy.

A few nearby students glanced over, sensing the tension, but quickly looked away.

The boy stared at her.

Longer this time.

Deeper.

Then—

Slowly—

He leaned forward.

Close enough that only she could hear him.

"And I think…"

His voice softened.

Lower.

"…you are too."

Lila's heartbeat stuttered.

For the first time since waking up—

She felt it.

Not fear.

But recognition.

He knows.

Her instincts screamed at her to step back.

But she didn't move.

She couldn't.

Because above his head—

The number flickered again.

Violently.

[Danger Level: ???]

Lila's eyes widened.

It glitched.

Distorted.

Then—

It disappeared.

Gone.

Like it had never been there.

Her chest tightened.

That wasn't normal.

That wasn't possible.

A number she couldn't read—

Was far more dangerous than one she could.

The boy leaned back in his chair, completely relaxed again.

Like nothing had happened.

Like he hadn't just exposed something impossible.

"Careful, Lila," he said lightly.

His smile returned.

But now—

She could see it clearly.

It wasn't friendly.

It was a warning.

"Some things…"

He tapped his desk once.

Soft.

"…are better left unseen."

Silence followed.

Lila stood there for a moment longer.

Processing.

Calculating.

Then slowly—

She turned.

And walked back to her seat.

But this time—

She wasn't observing anymore.

She had found her first target.

And this time—

She wouldn't lose.

She had found her first target.

Alex.

Lila lowered her gaze slightly, hiding the sharpness in her eyes.

Calm.

Controlled.

Unreachable.

Around her, the classroom slowly returned to normal.

Voices rose again.

Chairs shifted.

Laughter resumed.

But something had changed.

Her fingers rested lightly against her desk.

Still.

But not relaxed.

Her thoughts moved quietly beneath the surface.

Fast.

Precise.

Danger Levels can lie.

No—

Not lie.

They can be hidden.

Her eyes flickered upward.

Just once.

Alex was no longer looking at her.

He had already turned away, speaking casually to someone beside him.

Smiling.

Laughing.

Normal.

Too normal.

Lila watched him for a moment longer.

Then—

She focused.

Really focused.

Her vision sharpened.

The world around her dimmed slightly.

Numbers appeared again.

Clearer this time.

Brighter.

Above one student—

[Danger Level: 14]

Another—

[Danger Level: 6]

Normal.

Stable.

Then—

Her gaze returned to him.

For a moment—

Nothing.

Then—

A flicker.

Like static across a broken screen.

Her breath slowed.

There.

Just above his head—

Something moved.

Not a number.

A distortion.

Something she hadn't seen before.

[— — —]

Lila's pupils shrank.

"…What is that?"

It wasn't a number.

It wasn't empty.

It was… blocked.

Like something was interfering.

Her grip tightened.

So it wasn't just hidden.

It was being suppressed.

A faint sound echoed in her mind.

[Warning]

[Unknown Variable Detected]

Lila froze.

Her heartbeat—once steady—skipped.

The system… reacted?

This was new.

Completely new.

Her breathing slowed again, forcing herself back into control.

Stay calm.

Don't react.

Not yet.

She leaned back slightly in her chair.

Careful.

Measured.

Her gaze lowered.

Breaking eye contact.

But her mind—

Didn't stop.

Unknown variable.

Suppressed danger.

System warning.

Her lips curved.

Just barely.

So this wasn't just a game of numbers.

It was something deeper.

Something hidden.

And Alex—

Her eyes lifted one last time.

Was at the center of it.

Across the room, he paused mid-conversation.

Then—

Slowly—

He turned his head.

Their eyes met again.

This time—

Neither of them looked away.

Silence stretched.

Thin.

Sharp.

Then—

He smiled.

Not warm.

Not kind.

But knowing.

And above his head—

For a split second—

The distortion shifted.

[Danger Level: ???]

Before vanishing again.

Lila's breath stilled.

Confirmed.

Not a mistake.

Not a glitch.

Something far worse.

Her fingers curled slightly.

Good.

Her eyes darkened.

This made things…

More interesting.

The bell rang.

Sharp.

Final.

Students stood.

Voices rose.

Movement returned.

But Lila didn't move immediately.

She stayed seated.

Watching.

Thinking.

Calculating.

Because now—

She knew one thing for certain.

She wasn't the only one who could see beyond the surface.

And this time—

She wasn't the hunter.

Not yet.

Her gaze remained on Alex as he walked out of the classroom.

Unhurried.

Unbothered.

Like he already knew how this would end.

Lila stood slowly.

Her expression calm.

But her eyes—

Cold.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

Then I'll change the ending.
