Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: Testing The Unknown

Lila didn't follow the crowd.

Not immediately.

The classroom had already emptied halfway when she finally stood up, her movements unhurried, deliberate.

Controlled.

Her eyes shifted to the doorway.

Alex was gone.

Of course he was.

Her fingers tightened slightly around her bag strap.

Then relaxed.

Good.

If he had stayed, it would've been too easy.

And easy…

Was dangerous.

Lila stepped out into the hallway.

Noise returned instantly.

Voices.

Footsteps.

Laughter.

Normal.

But her world—

Wasn't.

Numbers flickered above every passing student.

[Danger Level: 8]

[Danger Level: 21]

[Danger Level: 5]

Predictable.

Readable.

Except for one.

Her gaze moved forward.

Scanning.

Searching.

Then—

She found him.

At the end of the hallway.

Near the staircase.

Leaning casually against the wall like he had nowhere else to be.

Alex.

Her steps slowed.

Just slightly.

Above his head—

Nothing.

No number.

No flicker.

No distortion.

Empty.

Lila's eyes sharpened.

So it wasn't just in the classroom.

Whatever he was hiding—

It stayed hidden.

Good.

That meant she wasn't imagining things.

She walked toward him.

Steady.

Calm.

Not too fast.

Not too slow.

Intentional.

Alex didn't move.

Didn't look up.

But when she got close—

He spoke.

"You followed me."

Not a question.

Lila stopped a few steps away.

"I didn't hide it."

His lips curved slightly.

Amused.

Now he looked up.

Their eyes met again.

Sharp.

Quiet.

Dangerous.

Lila tilted her head slightly.

Studying him.

Then—

She made her move.

"You're not normal."

Straight.

Direct.

No hesitation.

For a brief second—

Silence.

Then—

Alex laughed.

Soft.

Low.

"I could say the same about you."

Lila didn't react.

Didn't smile.

Didn't deny it.

Instead—

She stepped closer.

Breaking distance.

Testing.

Watching.

Above his head—

Still nothing.

Her heartbeat slowed.

Then she reached out.

And grabbed his wrist.

The moment her fingers made contact—

The world shifted.

A sharp sound rang in her mind.

[Warning]

[Foreign Interference Detected]

Lila's eyes widened.

Above Alex's head—

Something exploded into existence.

Not a number.

Not a level.

Something else.

Something broken.

[Danger Level: ???]

No—

It wasn't stable.

It wasn't readable.

It was… resisting.

The air around them felt heavier.

For a split second—

Lila couldn't breathe.

Then—

Alex moved.

Fast.

Too fast.

His hand closed around her wrist.

Firm.

Cold.

Stopping her.

Completely.

Lila froze.

Their eyes locked.

And for the first time—

His expression changed.

No smile.

No warmth.

Nothing human.

"Don't."

His voice dropped.

Low.

Sharp.

A warning.

Not playful.

Not hidden.

Real.

Lila's pulse steadied.

Even now—

She didn't pull away.

Didn't panic.

Didn't break.

Instead—

She looked at him.

Carefully.

Memorizing.

So this is your real face.

Above his head—

The distortion twisted violently.

[??? → ERROR → ???]

Lila's vision blurred for a second.

Too much.

Too unstable.

Then—

Everything snapped back.

Silence.

The system disappeared.

The pressure lifted.

Alex released her wrist.

Just like that.

Like nothing had happened.

Like he hadn't just revealed something dangerous.

Something impossible.

Lila slowly lowered her hand.

Her fingers tingled slightly.

But her expression—

Didn't change.

"…Interesting," she murmured.

Alex watched her.

Long.

Quiet.

Then—

He smiled again.

Back to normal.

Perfect.

Untouchable.

"You shouldn't test things you don't understand," he said lightly.

Lila met his gaze.

Calm.

Cold.

"I plan to understand them."

A pause.

Then she turned.

Walking past him.

Unhurried.

But inside—

Her thoughts were moving.

Faster than ever.

He reacted.

He blocked it.

He knows.

Her grip tightened slightly.

So it's confirmed.

He's not just dangerous.

He's aware.

Behind her—

Footsteps.

Lila stopped.

Slowly—

She turned back.

Alex was still there.

Watching her.

Smiling.

But this time—

He spoke first.

"Next time…"

A pause.

His eyes darkened slightly.

"…you might not get away with it."

Lila didn't respond.

But above his head—

For a split second—

The system forced itself through.

[Danger Level: 100 → ???]

Then—

Gone.

Lila's eyes narrowed.

Her lips curved faintly.

So even the system—

Can't fully read you.

Good.

Her gaze sharpened.

Because that only meant one thing.

You're worth breaking.

She turned again.

Walking away without another word.

But this time—

Her heart wasn't calm.

It wasn't steady.

It was… alive.

Because now—

She had confirmed it.

This wasn't just revenge anymore.

It was something bigger.

Something dangerous.

And Alex—

Was at the center of it.

She turned again.

Walking away without another word.

But this time—

Her heart wasn't calm.

It wasn't steady.

It was… alive.

Because now—

She had confirmed it.

This wasn't just revenge anymore.

It was something bigger.

Something dangerous.

And Alex—

Was at the center of it.

Her steps slowed.

Just slightly.

Because behind her—

She felt it.

A shift.

Subtle.

But wrong.

Lila stopped.

Slowly—

She looked down.

Her breath caught.

Above her own hand—

A number flickered.

Faint.

Unstable.

Impossible.

[Danger Level: …1 → 7 → 23 → 58…]

Lila froze.

"…What?"

The number kept rising.

Faster.

Uncontrolled.

[58 → 71 → 84 → 96…]

Her heartbeat slammed once.

Hard.

That wasn't right.

That wasn't how it worked.

It only shows others…

Her thoughts cut off.

Because just before it reached 100—

It stopped.

And changed.

[Danger Level: ???]

Lila's pupils shrank.

Behind her—

A quiet voice echoed.

Close.

Too close.

"…Now that's new."

Lila's body went still.

Very slowly—

She turned.

Alex was standing right behind her.

Closer than before.

Watching.

Not smiling.

Interested.

And above his head—

Nothing.

Still nothing.

But this time—

That felt worse.

Much worse.

Lila stared at him.

Then at her own hand again.

The number was gone.

Like it had never been there.

Silence stretched.

Thin.

Sharp.

Unreal.

Her mind tried to catch up.

To make sense of it.

To understand—

But one thought broke through everything else.

Cold.

Clear.

Wait…

Her breath slowed.

What just happened?
